Should the Texans Make A Trade?

Trade deadline today. We have a lot of holes both on offense and defense. Kubiak possibly coaching for his job. A lot of teams out of it already and could part ways with some talent like the Vikings who could trade Jared Allen.

Should the Texans try to make some moves before the trade deadline and improve our chances to save this season or should we stand pat and save our draft picks?
 
Stand pat if you are trying to salvage the season. Trade if you get a decent offer for Ben Tate or someone else we're going to lose anyways.

what if keenum ends up being the real deal?

I would make a trade because the AFC is wide open this year. Patriots are hurting and very vulnerable and so are the Broncos.
 
Sure, trade away anyone you want for picks. No point in making this team better right now, because every win is one step closer to keeping Rick Smith and Kubiak for another year. I hope they lose out and clean house accordingly, cause we aren't playing for anything this year.

Agree with this. Hold onto our picks or add some by trading away dead wood if possible, clean house at the end of the season, but I'd keep Smith, and then start over with a whole new coaching staff. We've got some really good talent on the team and it shouldn't take a good coaching staff long to get us back in the playoffs, hopefully next year.

Let's also trade Kubiak for a couple hot cheerleaders.
 
The only trade we should make is the ones where we acquire extra picks in the next draft. The thought of us mortgaging the future to win a game or two is just dumb.

Here's the problem with trading and the NFL and why you don't really see blockbuster deals happen at the trade deadline:

1) It's really early in the season and there are plenty of teams who are nowhere close to playoff contention who think they still have a shot. They will want to keep the few good players they have on their roster in hopes of pulling a 2012 Vikings and just getting to the wildcard game.

2) Coaches and GM's who do not believe they are on the hot seat (again, because it's still fairly early in the season) are not going to trade away key players for draft picks because that would appear that they are throwing away the season when it's barely half over.

3) The guys who are apparently available (Nicks, Allen, Britt are the ones I hear the most) are either in a position that we just invested a high draft pick in, and are going through a change at a position that is crucial to their involvement on the team (WR's), or, are on the last year of their contract and will be basically an 8 game rental and then you have to re-sign that player (Allen).

Jared Allen is the only guy I have heard bandied about being traded (and really that just started today, and with Seattle) that I would have a passing interest in as Texans fan, and really, I cannot find it in myself to be upset if they "passed over" Jared Allen. I might give up like a conditional 4th or 5th round pick for that particular player, but I doubt the Vikings would just give up Allen for that low of a price.

If Keenum ends up being the real deal, great. Actually awesome. I still wouldn't trade picks away to improve this year. Take a chance with the young players. Hope some shine and plug holes for next year. The only exception being a right tackle that would stay for a few years.

I still can't understand fans that want the team to lose when there is still a chance at the playoffs. Blows my mind...

So if there's a chance to make the playoffs and your new quarterback ends up being the real deal, why wouldnt you take a chance on sacrificing some draft picks that could or could not work out in future order to save the season and acquire players who are proven?

The future isnt promised to anyone. The AFC is wide openn this year. I think a trade for a proven talented linebacker from a losing team could do wonders.

Put schaub on the market, see if anybody bites. Sacrifice some draft picks if you could talk a losing team into parting ways with a really talented player.

Nobody is going to trade for a QB in the middle of the season to help them win now. Especially given that he is injured... Even if the system were similar enough for him to understand, he would have no timing with receivers, etc... CRAZY idea that will never happen!... and why would a "losing team" give up draft picks for a limited athlete at QB on the back side of his career- in the midst of possibly significant injury issues?

First the mountain the Texans have to climb is very, very steep. This team doesn't need a player to fix what happened over the first 7 games. Players just need to play better. No more dumb penalties at crucial times. No more holding blocks for 2 seconds then releasing. The only exception is at QB and Keenum is the attempt at correcting that.

Schaub really can't be traded. We'd have to restructure 2-3 contacts just to trade him.

but according to kubiak schaub is healthy. :kubepalm:

He's only 32 and a change of scenery could do him wonders. there are what 8-9 games left in the season, if you're not gonna bring him back next year, dangle him out there and see if anybody bites.

What is it with this franchise and fanbase where you dont even want to give yourself a chance to find out?

This is exactly what I'd be working the phones for right now. Maybe, we could find another veteran O'Lineman for a 5th round pick like we did with Myers.
 
No clue why we didn't try to move Tate...now we lose him at the end of the season with nothing to show in return. Wonder if his rib injury impeded our ability to even discuss it...

I said this a while ago, but I don't see a bunch of teams lining up to throw big money at Tate. Maybe more than we'd be willing to pay...we'll see

He's a goner. Browns already indicated they will target him and I suspect teams like the Jets, Cowboys and San Diego won't be too far behind.

That may be the case, but Tate still has to like the situation/money offered.

If a team throws a bunch of money at Tate, I'll be surprised.

If an offer came in to double his salary? That's reasonable on the side of conservative speculation. I know if at worst, I was offered a double in pay to be a starter elsewhere, I certainly wouldn't think long on it.

His contract next yr with the browns will hopefully get us a 3rd or 4th round compenatory pick...

He is worth keeping this yr IMO
 
Not Rick Smith style. Expect him to be unusually busy this upcoming off-season however. Draft picks are treated like gold which makes cutting Sam Montgomery & Chris Jones so frustrating.

What makes some of the Draft picks so frustrating this year is not cutting them, but picking them in the first place.

I would've had no problem cutting Montgomery or Tavaris instead of Chris Jones. Dude's been doing pretty darn good for the Pats. McClain's been nothing more than a rag doll this season.

I must admit, we screwed the pooch with some of our personnel moves this year. Frustrates me every time I watch the Pats play and seeing Jones making plays.

That said, I dug the Quessenberry pick and he was pushing for a starting spot until his injury. Look forward to seeing him next year.

Texan scouting department had to be high on Sam, the coaches had to feel he could kick outside, takes at least two to tango. There was just not enough sample size to justify either the pick or the cut. Montgomery had a track record of issues relating to work ethic regardless he looked the part otherwise the professionals on Kirby would never made the pick. Understand the situation but you generally give a prospect you've invested in, a couple years to mold & develop. Seems to me a knee jerk reaction to a series of poor decisons based off sketchy circumstances.
 
The FO let Mario Williams walk for nothing knowing we werent gonna be able to resign him.

What makes yall think they are actually looking to trade Tate or anybody else?
 
Not that the trade deadline passed or anything but who would want a RB with four broken ribs? Yes he'll eventually heal but playing football is not the way to heal broken ribs.

Apparently no one, since the deadline passed. MJD was up for trade too, but didn't go anywhere, probably due to salary issues.

The problem is that the NFL is designed to have teams enter the season with their best roster possible, and then hope they can keep it in tact the whole year. Teams that expect to compete for a Super Bowl tend to be right up against the cap, because if you don't spend all your money, you are likely at a competitive disadvantage. This means that the teams that would most likely be open to acquiring players do not have the cap space to go get available players. It hurts the teams that want to trade too, because they end up wasting cap space on these players that could be rolled over to the next year, and they miss out on the compensation (picks in most cases) that would help them in the future. I really think the NFL needs to revisit some of the rules around trades and the salary cap. I'll make a thread about it in the NFL section with some ideas later.
