The "Keenum is the Solution" Draft

So, it might be a little early (hell it's a lot early) but I like very much what I've seen from Keenum at this point. I'm going to say we win a few more games, but we're going to finish this with one worse than the 2010 record: 5-11. We'll pick around 8-9 and for the sake of this draft I'll assume it's around 8. This is going on the assumption that Keenum is the answer to the QB question we've been asking. Assuming***** so that everyone sees this disclaimer****

Round 1: OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M, 6-5 305 lbs

If you are becoming disgusted with the crap play of Derek Newton, you're not alone. Let's do Keenum a favor and lock down the right side of the offensive line. With Brandon Brooks coming into his own, Jake Matthews, a tackle who can hold down and dominate the right (which he played last year when teammate and 2013 2nd overall pick Luke Joeckel was playing LT) and perhaps be Duane Brown's successor to the left one day. This will be a boon in the passing and running game.

Round 2: ILB Yawin Smallwood, UConn, 6-2 244 lbs

The injury to Cushing is a crushing blow. Neither Mays nor Sharpton are starters, and we need a Bowman to Cushing's Willis, if he ever gets back to the level he used to be at. If, God forbid, anything should happen to Cushing again, we need someone who's more than just depth. Smallwood shows good speed and is quick to get off blocks with use of his good size and agility. He will need to get stronger and work on tackling form somewhat. He can cover and is good at closing in but needs to avoid hesitating as he sometimes does, and is capable of reading coverage, which is what we need more than just a run thumper.

My first choices for this position would be Christian Jones or AJ Johnson but I think they'll be gone late 1st.

I also like Perryman out of the U here, but Smallwood would be my first pick if Jones and Johnson are gone.

Round 3: CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State, 5-11 197 lbs

Brice McCain may have made the play that got Keenum his last chance attempt against the Chiefs, but he was abused for a large part of the game. In honesty any attack that forces us to put in the nickel corner is exploiting us because though JJo can be counted on to hold his own, Shiloh Keo and Swearinger improving, and KJax even turning into a playmaker (who would have thought?), McCain is no longer the nickel corner he used to be and we need to spend higher than a sixth round pick on it. Dennard is a good cover man and can be counted on to develop into a good nickel corner, hopefully solidifying the back end of the defense.

Round 4: S C.J. Barnett, Ohio State, 6-0 205 lbs.

This guy has got Texans pick written all over him. Described by Urban Meyer as an extra coach, a high motor, hard working, competitive overachiever, Barnett has an injury concern from 2010 but has been a consistent bright spot for the Buckeyes' defense. We need safety depth because old man Reed should be gone after this year, and there's not much behind Shiloh Keo and DJ Swearinger. His feet placement and man coverage leaves a bit to be desired, but I have faith in Vance Joseph to work his magic on him like with KJax.

Round 5: DE Kony Ealy, Mizzou, 6-5 275 lbs

This is a well built specimen of 275 pounds right here. He has something of a Jason Pierre Paul build in my mind. He gets after the QB. Needs to work on run D a little, I think, but with JJ Watt aside from him somehow I think he'll learn. Good upside here, and DE depth what with Antonio Smith's upcoming situation is a good idea. Bats down passes like no other and emulated JJ Watt vs the Bengals this year against Indiana, I think it was.

Round 6: WR/RB Dri Archer, Kent State 5-8 178 lbs

Archercopy-thumb-646x441-123537.jpg

Speedy situational player. Essentially what sort of pick Tavon Austin should have been, lol. Yeah... remember that throw to Posey? Posey did a great job of getting YAC. Now imagine that same throw to this guy. Makes great cuts and has excellent vision. Get him some daylight and he's gone. Watch this guy's highlight reels and tell me he's not worth a 6th.

Round 7: QB Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech, 6-6 260 lbs

Bring in a 3rd QB as an experiment, develop him and see if he can't grab the #2 spot away from Yates. Thomas looks different from earlier in the season and has played better overall. He's got the physical tools, so let's see if our coaching staff can't work wonders with him.

Questions/comments/criticism appreciated!

1) I agree with addressing OT in the 1st, but Matthews will be long gone at #8 and Lewan will be gone as well. You're looking at the kid from Alabama (Koujandjio) who has a very high ceiling, but is not at that same level yet. He's a freak though.

2) Love Smallwood. I was loving him as a 4th round sleeper for us last year but he has blown up this year. He really reminds me of David Hawthorne, who I thought was fantastic in Seattle.

3) CB is a huge need. We really need someone who can come in and cover the slot and eventually replace Joseph. Not sure if Dennard is that guy, but he's an upgrade over McCain for sure.

4) Barnett is a solid pick. I think there are higher upside guys at Safety, but it's no secret that this position needs to be addressed.

5) Ealy is very intriguing. He has a ton of upside and I could see him going earlier than this because of that. We do need to address the DL though. Pass rush needs serious help.

6) I mocked Archer in my last mock. We need to find a kick returner who can also contribute on offense. Martin is neither of those. Could also help to add a change of pace back since Tate will be gone. Archer and Venric Mark are two guys I like.

7) No on Thomas. I've never liked him as a prospect. He's not NFL material, IMO.

I don't know if keenum is the solution and I don't know about the players picked here, but keenum being the answer would be awesome (or really anyone already on the roster, and I like the positions picked.

1) One can dream, right? :D

2) I can see why you'd think that, but a 7th round pick is not exactly likely to work out anyway. If I could get him UDFA I would, because I think there are some interesting things we could do with his physical abilities.

:toropalm: It's just so damn depressing to already be talking about next year's draft in what was supposed to be such a promising season. Man things went to hell quick didn't they? :(

Talking draft for some of us is year round regardless of how well Texans are doing. They should be separated in terms of perception, every year there is a draft & free agency during the off season, a good organization is always trying to improve regardless of past performance. Love of football & College players entering business as profession is an exciting opportunity for them & fans alike. :)

In terms of Texan season, yes it has been depressing both record, injury wise & evolution of specific players & coaching. Easy to pile on the QB & Head Coach, comes with territory & fans will be fans. :fans:

In regards to Keenum, here is my analogy. I don't know how many Hobbit fans we have here but feels like Desolation of Smaug, where the Dwarfs were literally blown out of their mountain (Relient) by the gold hording fire breathing dragon Smaug, only to be led back by a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (Case Keenum). Will he out wit the dragon & what will be the cost (Schaub/Kubiak)?

The only problem with this analogy is that Kubiak isn't Gandalf. He's Radagast.

I just spent some time looking at old mocks/draft conversations from the past few years and I
Think people shouldn't have such strong takes without considering other arguments. It's fine to not like a guy or love a guy, but taking that trip down memory lane reminded me to be more open minded and to consider other viewpoints.

really like this mock. address current and future needs. would like a RB a little bit higher with woods gone and tate probably leaving in FA.

my only concern is if you are going all out with Keenum i would like some extra o-line help and some added weapons but thats just my opinion.

overall good mock.

If you truly believe that Keenum is the future of the position then I like this mock. Honestly we have more needs than draft picks to fill those needs but this fixes the big one on the O-line and LB. My only complaint is that I'd like to see more late round O-line and LB help, I'm not familiar with the 6th round pick, and would prefer an OG/OT in the late rounds and another LB for added depth. Otherwise very good job.
