NSF - Bruno Mars to play Super Bowl XLVIII

The NFL announced Sunday that Bruno Mars will play the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show. The Grammy Award winner scored his first five No. 1 singles faster than any male since Elvis Presley, according to Billboard.

Apparently this was being hotly tipped over the last week (I didn't hear anything - it was probably doing the rounds with the housewife Super Bowl demographic).

A fairly meh choice for me - but I've accepted that they're just trying to appeal to as many people as possible, so I guess it's a good choice. At least I'll still be able to use the washroom at halftime, safe in the knowledge that I'll be missing less than if my trip took up any gametime.

I never heard of the dude .... So I went to Youtube and typed in Bruno Mars .... I hit play on the first song on the list .... Ugh , is he a Michael Jackson clone ?! .... Hope he leaves the little boys alone.

Its safe to say that this years Superbowl will be watched just like any other game is in my house - an hour (might add an extra half hr) behind on the DRV so I can fast forward past the commercials and halftime mumbo jumbo.

I wish I hadn't youtubed Bruno Mars .... :boogereater:

Not a big fan of his music but the guy can sing at least.

*I just realized how sad that is. It seems a lot of today's big music artists are so 'manufactured'*

He's actually one of the better artists, and can actually sing.. Much better than that over the hill should have retired years ago performances.

Seriously?

I'm the same as Corrosion.

I've read the name before, but have absolutely no idea what the music sounds like. I heard a little bit on the NFL AM show this morning, and a few seconds is all I needed to hear to determine that it's not my thing.

But, the Super Bowl is less about football than it is about entertainment, so I have always been pretty ambivalent about what they do with it. The playoffs is where I find my football nirvana.

The music I like will never be seen at a SB halftime show, and that's alright with me. I like it that way. :brando:

Another year, another halftime show I'll be not watching. I'm not their target audience anyways.

I'm not in the loop with who's who of popular music, but I know some of his songs. I saw him & his ensemble performing somewhere on television in the last couple of months and the "show" reminded me a bit of The Elements: Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Good choice. He is very popular and very talented. Should provide an upbeat energetic half time show. How people havent even heard of him before is beyond me.

Yeah , we're not in their target audience .... But we pay for everything their target audience buy's (The 40somethings). We generally have the greatest amount of disposable dollars / wealth .... You figure we'd get some attention. Nope , we just get the bill.

Yeah, I understand but still, come with me to "fantasy land" where the halftime performer is chosen by..... DOUBLE BARREL. I just gotta know, what would we be seeing? Buckethead?

I want to see Rush do a halftime show and go over trying to finish 2112 in the allotted time.

Bingo! Rush would be my first choice. They are all in the R&R Hall of Fame now (fwiw), but since their music does not cater to stripper dancing, they will most likely be unable to qualify. Plus, they use words that over half of America do not know, so let's keep it light and fluffy in order to pander to the largest potential audience.

But, Metallica would also work (they are in the R&R HoF, too....fwiw) and have sold tens of millions of records, but again, music is not conducive to stripper moves and twerking.

Plus, those bands actually perform live instead of lip-syncing, so they might not work too well in a situation that requires them to fake it.

What is funny is a lot of the music they play clips all game long is exactly what they won't play at half time - Metallica, GnR, etc.

Fwiw, Bruno mars doesn't really make stripper music...lol

I think he's a good choice. I dont know everyone's music tastes, but his solo stuff is kind of light with decent vocals.

yep, great point. I hear all kinds of metal riffs for 'bumper music' at games. From Pantera to Marilyn Manson, AC/DC to Metallica (and beyond), none of these groups would ever be considered for a performance at the Super Bowl.

lol! I did not mean that he makes stripper music. Rather, he makes music that you can dance to, and these days, it seems like stripper moves have gone mainstream. Most professional dancing you see today incorporate a lot of moves that used to be seen only by topless dancers, hence my shortcut term, "stripper dancing".

But, sex sells, and there's nothing sexy about metal/hard rock. I get it, and it does not bother me at all. It is what it is.

What ?!?! You forget about all those metal video's full of girls in short skirts & groupies after every show .... Metal was all about .... sex!

Yeah, put me in the Bruno who? crowd. It doesn't matter to me though. I don't watch halftime any more anyway because I don't give a rat's ass about it. Other than the actual football part, I just distance myself from all of that other stuff. As soon as the clock hits 0:00 at the end of the half, I'm getting my food on or whatever - wake me for the 2nd half kickoff. I don't care about 70 year olds (Stones, McCartney, etc) or people I've never heard of (Bluto Mars) getting out there with these huge productions with hundreds of dancers and crazy costumes, making halftime ridiculously long.

IMO when a Super Bowl ticket is sold $1000 and up, they better come up with something to entertain those that forked up that kind of cash. Sure for those of us at home, without the true sound, glitz, glamor etc., there's no better time for food and refreshments.

I said that I wanted the experience of attending one Super Bowl, been there and done that. No I don't want a t-shirt, I want to go to another one.

I like "Grenade" and "The Lazy Song." Not sure if I know any of his other stuff. Kind of a pop-reggae sound if I'm not mistaken?

That's the thing - what demographic group has more $$$ to throw down on sh!t like a Super Bowl ticket than the 40somethings ?!?

This is more about TV ratings & advertisement $$$ than entertainment .... otherwise they would be catering to the crowd with the most discretionary income.

over the age of 50 have half of the total amount of discretionary income in their control, making the 50-plus age category the wealthiest group in the nation. This group also corners three-quarters of the bank deposits in the nation, and accounts for 80 percent of all savings accounts

Economy & Business; Selling to 45-Plus Generation: That's Where the Money Is

AMERICA is aging, and some people suggest that marketers are going to have to change their ways and start trying to appeal to the older set.

''A lot of companies are afraid that if they admit they are appealing to a 45-plus market, they aren't cool or hip any more,'' said Lori Bitter, a partner at the Mature Market Group, part of J. Walter Thompson Worldwide, in San Francisco.

But, he said, ''the 18-to 34-year-old population is shrinking, not growing.

''The 45-plus market is the new customer majority. This isn't anything we are making up. This is real. It's huge.''

I need to do some stat searches after the game, of course. I thought celebs, athletes and family and friends along with sponsors got the choice seats. I would think those 40 somethings and up that are up close and personal have probably celebrated on fine food and beverages to the extent that they would probably behave like a 20ish somebody.

I guess those images did not come to mind as I got into metal with thrash/speed metal, which was as far from the glossy videos and strippers as it got back then (this was when Sabbath and Van Halen used to be called hard rock).

Thrash shows in the '80's were all dudes. Women were scared to go to them (and most chicks didn't like the music back then). Man, how times have changed...

Well if he has his way all the girls will be squeaky clean.

Celebrities like Will Smith and Bruno Mars are calling for the daily use of wet wipes, but sewer utilities are struggling to cope with their clogged-up pipes and pumps.

Well Blake, put me in your "How people havent even heard of him before is beyond me." category. I'd never heard of the guy before yesterday but that's not to say he/his band, hang arounds and the such aren't the best ever. Just don't float my boat. Or even rock it like a slight ripple would.

Guess you'll find me tending the pit around 1/2 time, like every other year. Time to put on some more poppers, you know the kind wrapped in Wright Brand Bacon. That stuff is proven great where this, who is he/them?...can wail their lungs out and I won't be tortured. AGAIN!

F'kn 1/2 time shows. Good time to tend the pit. :D

I know few will take pity on me over the Titans thing...

back in 2008-09 playoffs, when the Super Bowl was in Tampa, Springsteen was the halftime show...and I am a massive diehard...

We were vacationing at the same time in Sarasota, which maybe an hour drive away...

So my wife said, if the Titans made it, whatever it cost, I was getting in that stadium for that perfect storm.

Ooops as the thumbtacks flamed out against a meh Ravens team. Man I hated watching that SB.
