Pretty good interview with Sage. He talks a bit about playing QB under Kubiak and gives some insight into how our system is set up.

Hopefully this helps shed some light on how our offense is run including how much freedom our guys have when calling plays.

The offense makes it simple for the QB with the play action.

When you get to empty, it's all on the QB to make the right read.
Obviously, there are concepts to help the QB, but the system that Kubiak runs don't go with the empty set much because it doesn't tie into the main concept of the play action in the ZBS.

Even in the single back set, Alex Gibbs had talked about (in that series where he worked with the LSU Tigers coaches) how he needed to think of ways to tie everything together so that he can make it "simple" (not a good term) for all the guys.
 
Read the title as in coming back to play and thought "now that is a QB controversy!"

I get all that, I was just curious about what you meant...

But yeah...Empty sets definitely put more on the QB as far as thinking goes.

I like Sage and I thought it was an excellent interview (heard it live taking my son home from the dentist).

He really shed some light on Kubiak's WCO and the role of QB. Fans expect too much from Schaub based on what other QBs do, but this system is not those systems. I think Kubiak has been a good QB guru, and like Sage said, his QBs usually have their best seasons when he's their coach. Heck, go back to Steve Young (Kubiak QB coach) and Elway (Kubiak OC calling plays) for examples before the Texans.

I would not be surprised if Sage ends up a Houston radio personality like Seth and TJ. Houston seems to appreciate former Texans.

Let's just not bring up Rosencopter. ;)

I always enjoy talking footba with you Rey.
Obviously, I've been learning things from you, but I also learns football strategies, concepts, philosophies, and techniques from other sources, too.

My philosophy is that if I can learn at least one thing from each person, I will be alright.
 
I think it's interesting to point out that in Keenum's second
scoring drive (3 pts after 2 failed lobs into the endzone)
that Kubiak put him in single back and empty set formations.

Keenum moved the ball pretty effectively from those sets (his
bread and butter in college) and would probably have scored
if Gary's offense was as hurry-up as Kevin Sumlin's was.

The clock just ran out and the team was still too far away
to do anything else..

I hope we plan to use some no-huddle spread during the
next two games, because I think Keenum's talent could really
make it work here.

A la -- Kaepernic with SF, Wilson with Seattle and RGIII with
the skins..

I thought that if Lemon would have run that second route better it'd have been a TD. But it looked like he wasn't expecting the ball and let up a little.
 
I'm guessing that since Keenum was working so hard on learning
the playbook in the offseason he was too busy working on
bread-n-butter WCO plays and not spending too much time
developing timing for #2 receivers on semi hail-mary passes.

I think I would have taken a shot at the sideline on the first
play to decrease the percentage on the second.

Case has definitely thrown those types of balls before, but without
serious time repping it I doubt it would have ever been high
percentage in Kubiaks mind..
