Texans OTAs thread (5/20-21, 23, 28-30, 6/3-6).

Sorry guys, super late but OTA's are running right when i'm in the middle of serious work time and I can't access a computer. Then went out with some friends after work and got some food. Just now getting home.

Rundown of Day 2 (All from Patrick Starr)

Darryl Sharpton said it has been a tough road but he said his body has never felt better. #Texans

Couple things from today. Keshawn Martin had a nice day. Ran sharp routes and caught the ball well. #Texans

Ryan Griffin took advantage of his time today. Big target and caught some tough passes today, few drops, but best he has looked. #Texans

Stephen McGee threw the ball well today. Yates and Keenum had their moments. Position battle to watch.

Watched Jared Crick closer today. Built better now for the run, probably will help at NT in a pinch. Overall strength has improved.

Rookie cornerback A.J. Bouye keeps making plays on the field. Did it in rookie mini camp and now first 2 days of OTAs One to watch.

Brooks Reed's transition to the inside is interesting. Seems very natural for him. Cushing was coaching him up today.

Talked to Deji Karim. Said his new teammates give him a hard time about his KR last year when he was with the Colts non stop.

Kareem Jackson said bringing back Brice McCain for the defense was "huge". Says 3 seasons with JJo and Brice have been great.

Jeff Maehl has been probably one of the most consistent WRs to this point. Has caught everything thrown his way.

DeAndre Hopkins looks so confident catching the football. Makes one handed catches look so easy.

QBs had an overall rough day. Poor center to QB exchanges. Some work to be done.

Rookie ILB Ja'Gared Davis had a nice interception of a tipped pass today.

Can't wait to see the full backs in action. All three are loads and feel for the ILBs that will be taking them on.

#Texans fullbacks are Greg Jones (6-1 268 lbs.) Tyler Clutts (6-2 254 lbs.) and Zach Boren (6-0 255 lbs.)

Sam Montgomery knows one speed. Today when Jeff Maehl tried to block him, Sam literally moved him with ease. (Picked him up.) #Texans

(To be fair, Jeff Maehl weighs about 170.)

Montgomery does a good job playing disciplined on the backside of a play. Two days in a row where a bootleg would have been a sack. #Texans

The new and improved Jared Crick

Here's a rundown of everything Starr saw that he might not have included in his tweets.

Oh, and if there is stuff you guys want me to birddog for you, I'd be happy to do it.

I'm interested in knowing how Kareem Jackson is moving around at 208.

And Quessenberry, since either he or Williams will be the starter.

Edit: Just saw this:

- Kareem Jackson came into OTAs at 208 lbs., but in 2012 he played at 192 lbs. He assured us that he trains heavy in the off-season but it will even out when camp approaches. He said he plays lighter during the season and he has always trained like this.

So not much of a concern.

Oh, and if there is stuff you guys want me to birddog for you, I'd be happy to do it.

A direct question about Matt's performance & residual effects of his LisFranc.

If they are worried at all, that Matt will never be as good as he was.

Ask them where the hell Tim dobbins is?

We asked. He said OTA's voluntary. Usually if there is a reason a guy isn't there, like graduation or health reasons or whatever, we are told.

So I think the answer is nobody knows.

We won't get a straight answer on that.

I asked Schaub about his health, and he said "great."

I could ask him specifically about residual after effects and orthotics or whatever, but I'm guessing no way I get a real answer. Schaub is probably the best at saying nothing at about his physical condition.

Quessenberry is a big body. He was the day 1 guy that Kubiak mentioned as a stand out to him. Which is his way of pushing Williams.

But even before Williams' knee botherment, the Texans were high on Quessenberry. Enough that I'm getting better at spelling his name off the top of my head.

Here's my Day 2 Report.

Basically, there's a bunch of stuff that comes out of camp, and I am trying to sort out what is real and what is just practice talk.

Also has a link to my most relevant off-season Texans analysis links at the end.

Also has a discussion in the comments about questions people have about what I am seeing. Lots of good discussion in both the Day 1 and Day 2 comments already.

Just trying to be your eyes and ears at OTAs, giving you a flavor of what it is like to be there.

I can see Quess becoming a solid "B" graded player over time. Williams better put a wiggle in it. My one question on him was how hard he's driven. I get the impression he showed up in rookie shape, not NFL shape. With a knee, that all may push him to the last third of the season before he contributes meaningfully.

Eh. I thought Williams looked in decent shape. Big, big body.

So I wouldn't read too much into it.

But dudes get injured. And the whole can't make the club from the tub stuff is harsh but true.

So practice moves on. And other guys get more reps. It's early though to be making predictions, but once a guy is on the roster, you pretty much have to ignore where they were drafted because it is a battle royale. Drafted guys have a leg up because of contract, and that it is harder to stash on p-squad, but rookies have to practice and learn. Coaches don't know what they can do.

Kubiak on Ed Reed (hip): "Our expectations are to look at camp at some point and be ready to go at the opening of the season." #Texans

DT Sunny Harris and TE Phillip Supernaw suffered foot injuries on Monday. Both are out until at least next week #Texans

ILB Tim Dobbins has not been at OTAs. #Texans coach Gary Kubiak: "It's voluntary. He's not here."

Some info on AJ Boye:
http://www.ucfathletics.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/bouye_aj00.html

Came back from his 2011 injury strong by starting all 14 games at cornerback
-Finished with 53 tackles, eight break-ups, three interceptions, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries
-One of just three players in UCF history to have an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble return for a touchdown in the same season
-Ended the year with 111 interception return yards, good for fifth on the UCF single-season list

Hate to hear about Supernaw. Hope it's not a recurrence of last year's metatarsal stress fracture.

When in doubt, call him "Quiz."

Also requesting that you keep an eye on Keenum for us. Thanks.

I think I am most interested in how our O-line play is (I mean, who is the RT right now taking 1st team reps, and then who's the 2nd teamer? Brooks looks leaner, but is his play better?), and how our outside pass rushers are looking. I think these two areas were our biggest hinderances last year and I am concerned about them this year heading into the camps.

Yep. This is my main thing.

Who is getting reps at starting RG/RT? How do they look? I know it's hard to tell much without pads on but just hearing about who's getting the snaps and if they seem like they know what they're doing would be great.

Just by going through all the pics between HT.com and Chron I noticed Brooks at RG and Harris at RT.

I think Brooks will do just fine, but I admit, RT is beginning to freak me out.

It appears Quessenberry was reppin with the two's and couldn't tell who the RG was going with the twos

Heard Andre on the radio and he said that he can tells DeAndre not only wants to be good, but wants to be great. Said that he was already asking about going with him wherever he's going when they get a break so they could work out together...

How about a trick question, "What are you going to do to minimize how much your foot affects your performance?"

To be fair, I'm one of the few who believe his foot was not an issue. I'd like to hear him say as much. "My foot was not an issue last season."

So maybe you can put it like that, "Matt, there's this guy who isn't really a fan of yours, but he's bothered by all the inuendo concerning your LisFranc. Can you throw him a bone & let him know you were 100% last year & will be 100% going into 2013?"

TK, you sneaky devil, you!. :) You don't truly believe that asking him a "tricky" question at this point won't simply result in getting a "tricky" answer in return, do you?:spy:

Schaub could be limbless and not even admit to a flesh wound. Beyond the black knight sort of stuff. There's some guys where it is hard to get any answer from them.

TC, I have to post this Black Knight segment from Monty Python: the Holy Grail for those that don't know to what you are referring, and for those that want to relive one of the funniest pieces they ever filmed.

Thanks for the visual.......and the memories.:)

Some good, bad and ugly re. OTA participants.

Not liking the comments on Brennan Williams.

Brennan Williams Sucking? OH MY GAH!!!!

If you had hoped that third round pick Brennan Williams would be a potential replacement in Year 1 for right tackle Derek Newton, who underwent offseason surgery and who likes to tweet about when he takes and wakes up from naps, you probably will be disappointed by this quote:

"(Williams) is way behind. He's got a little issue with his knee. We're trying to get him healthy and we gotta get his physical condition up with the rest of the team."

This makes me smile! Makes me wonder why last years guys weren't shadowing AJ everywhere.

Please keep an eye on Sharpton. His mobility is really good news. I hope he impresses when training camp comes around because at this point I am not too excited at the thought of having Montgomery or Williams being our day one starter. Unless we sign somebody it seems to me our best case scenario would be to have a Reed/Cushing/Sharpton/Mercilus LB Core. Hope Sharpton can stay healthy.

That is Ray Wiley Hubbard's song "London Homesick Blues" on Jerry's album

Sorry, sometimes things like that bug and I have to correct them.
That is Gary P. Nunn's song "London Homesick Blues" on Jerry Jeff's classic album "¡Viva Terlingua!" (anyone without a copy should be deported from Texas immediately).

It's generally as dry as west Texas sand to quote Jerry Jeff Walker.
First time the black knight scene has ever been described as "dry". Most people would call it wet. Even the guy at the Cheese Shop would say "it's a bit runny..."

Why?

We've already seen that last year. Reed & Whitney on the ends isn't going to get us the pass rush we need. We need to get better.

I don't know that Montgomery or Williams is the answer, but I'm not "worried" about them starting. If Wade thinks it's worth a shot..... go for it. Can't get a whole lot worse.

That's my thoughts as well. I don't really like Reed as a do it all ILB, but as a run stopper on 1st and second downs I think he can be ok....

But I want to give a bunch of guys a shot on the edge in this defense. We need more pressure from the edges.

Just a thought. Dobbins was IR'ed the beginning of Jan (4 1/2 months ago). The reason given was a nondescriptive "serious right ankle injury." If this were a significant high ankle sprain, return to play can easily be as long as 4-6 months or longer. If the high ankle sprain is severe and remains or becomes unstable and does not respond to rehab, surgery may become the only viable option.

[EDIT: ADDITIONAL INFO
Rotoworld reported the Texans release at the time:

Dobbins isn't thought to have a long-term injury, but his "badly" sprained ankle was severe enough that the Texans determined he had no chance to help with their playoff run.

Always get a little uneasy when I see these type of injury reports by the Texans.]

Why would that have him MIA as opposed to in attendance and not participating (ala Cushing and Posey), or off on his own doing recovery/rehab (as in the case of Ed Reed)?

Since it's voluntary, he might have decided to stay home and rehab on his own rather than coming in for it.

EDIT: And he might not have told the team he was going to do that.
