Texans Draft QB in 1st or 2nd

According to HoustonTexans.com, it's "not outside the realm of possibility" the team uses its first- or second-round pick on a quarterback.
"In this business, you better be looking for young quarterbacks you think have a chance to be a 10-12 year guy," coach Gary Kubiak said. Despite his comments, Kubiak insists he has faith in Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates. With Schaub in decline and Yates still a wild card, we don't doubt the Texans would pull the trigger on an early-round QB if they found themselves smitten. It's also possible the Texans are simply trying to create a market for the 27th pick.

Here's the link to the source article.

The Texans have drafted two quarterbacks under Kubiak and general manager/executive vice president of football operations Rick Smith: Yates, a fifth-rounder in 2011, and Alex Brink, a seventh-rounder in 2008. So history says that if they draft a quarterback this year, it’ll be in the later rounds.

But if someone the Texans think is potential franchise quarterback – say, Matt Barkley of USC or E.J. Manuel of Florida State – is on the board when they pick in the first round or two, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that they would draft him. Such a player could compete with the Texans’ young backups and learn under Schaub and Kubiak for a few seasons before he’d be expected to start.

I really, really hope we stay away from E.J. Manuel. I've already wasted enough time watching him struggle on my other football team.

If Barkley was there , I might do it . He is bigger than they thought at 6'3 with 10 inch hands . A four year starter at a name school and good character to boot . This is how the Packers got Aaron Rodgers .

Not seeing it.

I pretty much ignore everything I hear from teams from just past the Combine to the draft.

If Barkley somehow fell to the 3rd I wonder if the Texans would take him! I'd be shocked though if he made it to them in the 2nd round (#57).

I think you have to go Barkley in the 2nd if he's there. That would be great value considering before the year it was general consensus that he would be going number one overall.

Kinda like Matt Lienart.

To be fair, this isn't even from the team, per se. It's pure conjecture from the team's media arm.

Yeah, Kubiak made a couple comments when asked a question at the Combine and everyone's running with it. He even said they do the same evaluation of QBs every year. I reckon Schaub's rough stretch has about everything to do with it. Much ado about nada, imo

(Evaluating the QB depth in draft) "You're always looking to do that. I have a young player in T.J. (Yates) who I think a lot of. He goes from playing a lot of football, starting a playoff game to basically not doing much of all this year, having maybe 10 snaps, that was tough. I have a young player from the Univ. of Houston in Case Keenum, I think a lot of who came a long way for me last year. I feel good about those guys pushing Matt. And then we did sign McGee here a couple of weeks ago. In this business, you better be looking for young quarterbacks you think have a chance to be a 10, 12-year guy. This year will be no different.''

Before it's all said and done Case Keenum will emerge as the starting QB who will do magnificent things with our team!

http://blogs.buffalobills.com/2013/02/27/texans-feigning-quarterback-interest/

In all likelihood the Texans are feigning interest in a quarterback in a possible effort to stimulate trade talk where they sit at the bottom of round one, knowing the scenario exists where a quarterback needy team might trade up into the bottom of round one to land a better value at the quarterback position.

If I were a QB hungry team & I thought the Texans were looking at a QB, I would think their asking price would be higher than the team choosing just ahead of them. If the Texans want a QB, why would they trade their pick?

In that case, I would trade with the team ahead of the Texans to get my QB.

With that in mind, if the Texans are truly feigning interest, they aren't looking for a trade partner, they are looking for someone to draft a QB ahead of them so the player they really want falls to them....... or, if the next three or four teams aren't in the QB market, then a team may chose to trade, thinking the QB the Texans want would be there two or three choices later.

So yeah....... I don't know.

Sounds like Barkley or hopefully Bray will be under consideration.

This is a good thing. Keenum also could be the answer. Hopefully he has improved in the Texans more conventional offense.

The Texans can talk all the BS they want and lay down all the smoke screens as well, I'd be completely shocked if the Texans took a QB in the 1st or 2nd round. We just re-signed Schaub to a new contract and will owe him guaranteed money for at least the first 2 yrs.. I also don't think they want a new franchise QB sitting on the bench for 2 yrs. either, not to mention that if they did go after a starting QB prospect then I'd expect Schaub's performance on the field to suffer accordingly. Also this years QB crop ain't that good and I'd expect they might go after one in 2014 to sit for 1 yr. behind Schaub and hopefully 2014 is a better crop of QB's.

It should be better. You'll possibly have Teddy Bridgewater, AJ Mccarron, Aaron Murray, Marcus Mariota, Johnny Manziel, Tahj Boyd, etc.

Nooooooo, wait until 2014 to do that crap. QB class is waaaaaaaaaay deeper.

EDIT;

Teddy Bridgewater
Johnny Manziel
Blake Bortles
Kevin Hogan
Marcus Mariota

It's going to be a way better QB class than 2013.

While I do agree with you the Texans should wait to draft a QB, unless Bray falls to the bottom of the 2nd/3rd rd.

Getting a QB of the future is hardly crap. Getting a QB that has accuracy/arm strength and a little bit of mobility, as well as being able to read a defense is kind of important.

I actually could see us taking a qb in the 2nd round...seems like some good value could be had there & you'd have to take that....might have to move up a little though. This qb class isn't exactly overwhelming. Could easily see it.

I think the 1st is going to the defense though...Lb of some sort....people don't want to hear it b/c they feel it throws shade on JJ's amazing season but our defense let us down just about as much our offense did down the stretch.

Right but with how crappy this class is a guy with issues like Bray has is probably not worth a 1st or 2nd (like the article insinuates). I'm really big on looking at the draft overall and seeing which position groups are strong and which are weak.

There will be guys who are way way better than the guys who will probably go in the bottom of the first/top of the second that will probably be available at whatever pick the Texans have next year as opposed to this year. To me it just seems like they would be taking a QB just to take one to develop. Do that with one of the guys listed below Manziel on my list next year. Don't do that this year.

(Post is null and void if somebody like Geno Smith is available at #27 this year.)

This is my approach as well with the thinking that whichever position group is the deepest is the position that there will be a run on in the 1st. Happens every year. I remember in 2008 all the talk about who we should have available to us at the tackle position by the time we pick..Clady.....Cherilus...Otah...Albert. Duane Brown was an after thought. I remember folks on this board were upset b/c Brown was thought to be a project player..I'd say we nailed that one though lol.

Now If Geno falls that far,the football gods might've finally smiled down on us a little....can't see it though...dude was rumored to be the top overall pick at 1 point.

You know Leebig, I went back and watched about 8 of Barkley's game, and I must say I don't see the negativity you did.

He reset his feet just fine on several occasions when he had to avoid the rush and completed some tough throws.

His arm strength is better than Schaub (about 5 to 7 yards).
He can whiff the ball 40 yards downfield on the run.
He can make the transcontinental pass (and complete it.)
He can put the ball in the air some 62 yards.

In about 3 or 4 games, he already completed as many passes longer than 15 yards than E.J. Manuel did the whole year.

Except he has a 3rd arm with slow feet.

Yeah, I don't see what lee is looking at, either. I just watched every throw Barkley made against Oregon, which was the best team USC faced in 2012. Barkley threw the ball downfield very well. Better than he did the shorter passes, really. He threw a lot of short passes because he plays in a WCO. Saw a lot of pressure and looked pretty fearless in the pocket. My criticism would be his decision making while under pressure. That's the difference between good and great QBs.

Still, he's young and has a lot to learn. I think he's a sure fire 1st rounder and will be gone well before the Texans pick at #27. Arizona, Buffalo, NY Jets (#7-#9), one of these QB starved teams will take Barkley.

I don't see Barkley lasting to #27.

I'm not even sure that Geno Smith is the first QB off the board.
Smith does have very good athleticism and a pretty good football acumen.
I heard that he also has a great work ethic and spent a lot of time in the film room. Those are reasons that will probably notch him the honor, but there's no guarantee that he will be as successful in a pro system (or WC) as he would be in a shotgun spread offense.

Alex Gibbs made that pick.

Funny how a HOF OL coach can pick projects that actually reach their potential. Regardless of how a large contingent of this MB felt about the Brown pick. The Brown pick was one of the few times that Rick/Gary took a chance by trading down and picking a project like Brown. You can do things like this if you have great asst coaches.

To be successful, you need to surround yourself with competent people and let them do their jobs; I think that works in any field.

Barkley actually threw really well at his pro day. Every throw was on target and released before the wr went into his cut. Could wind up being a good qb

That is what set him apart from other QBs in this draft (maybe with the exception of Geno); anticipation. When you can throw "on time", arm strength becomes less of an issue.

I heard mayock and a few others saying after seeing him throw there's a big chance hell be the first qb off the board. I still like the idea of us taking ej Manuel. If he's willing to put the work in he could be another good one

Same as I've said before; my thinking has been that there's no guarantee Geno Smith will be the first QB off the board.

Regarding Manuel, to me, he has all the tools; whether he can put it together is up to him.

Agree he could be real good or be a jamarcus Russell. To me there's only 3 qbs in this draft with a legit chance to play. Every other one will make decent backs and we already have schaub so no back up needed lol
