Jeff Demps doesn't qualify for Olympics

Texn4life

Jeff Demps finished 7th in the 100m US qualifying, meaning he will not be going to London for the Olympics. He's previously said that he would stick with track even if he doesn't qualify this year. My question is would you make a phone call to guage his interest about possibly coming into camp to compete?

No.

Earlier in the mock process I mocked him to us with a seventh, but he wants to run track so let him run track.

Yes

He would be a dynamic KR/PR

Demps could also be a weapon in the slot and he could allow the Texans to carry only Foster and Tate at RB on gamedays. Speed kills and this guy almost made the olympics. But he also is a very good/versatile football player. You cant have enough guys like Demps on the team.

At 21/22, I'm sure a lot of us thought we knew what we "wanted" to do. Fact of the matter is he may actually have a brighter future in the NFL. I'm not certain of that, but what is he going to do while the Olympics are going on? May as well get into a camp and see if someone can utilize his speed and playmaking abilities.

I'm with you to an extent. I'm not ready to go as far as to say he'd be ready to overtake Forsett as the 3rd RB, but his skillset is enough for me to want to bring him in and see if he could help the team. We've tried out some pretty lackluster guys in the past. It's a no lose situation to bring him into camp, and if it doesn't work out then then both parties can walk away with no feelings hurt.

Has nothing to do with what I wrote. If he wants to play football he'll make that known. No one will have to gauge his interest.

My point is that he wants to run track and as far as we know he's made no attempt to play football. Let him run track.

IMO it has everything to do with what you wrote. If a team lets this kid know they'd really like him to come into camp then you have no idea how he'd feel about it. I'm sure in his mind he thought he'd be in London next month. Is he supposed to say, "Well I probably won't make the Olympics so if i don't teams give me a call right after the trials."

He thought he'd be representing our country. So now that he isn't i'm sure he'll entertain offers to make money. Money talks. BS walks. I guarantee you this won't be the first discussion of him coming into a camp this fall. What harm is there is making a phone call to see how he would feel about giving it a shot? His next meaningful track and field event should he choose to go back there is a full 5 or 6 months away. There are businesses who track down employees who show no interest in working for them or even in their field. This is no different.

I wouldn't waste my time making any calls to him. If he was to come into camp he'd be behind schedule and would likely have little shot at making the roster. I'd rather not take reps away from players that are dedicated to the sport and give then to someone that is just biding their time until the next qualifier track meet.

He has not expressed any interest as far as we know in playing in the NFL. If he wants to run track he'll likely be training hard so that he can qualify next time around. Messing around on someones practice squad is not going to help him achieve his goal.

Again, if he has given up on track and he makes it know that he'd like to try football I'd consider it if I were the texans. Until that time, I'm not going to bother. It's really not that crucial. Let him run track.

I get what you're saying completely. My thing is that he put his all into making the team this year, and would want it known before the fact that track has his full commitment. I've been saying I was going to go on a diet for the past 5 years. People say a lot of things they really don't mean.

I seriously doubt that he's lost a lot since December football wise and is probably in the best shape of his life. While it may be a long shot for him to make a team, I don't see the harm in letting him take a few reps away from the guys behind the top 3 backs on our squad. (If he's willing to give football a serious shot like you've said).

Olympics over, Jeff Demps wants to play in the NFL

Ian Rapoport ‏of NFL Network reports that Demps is ready to play football and hoping to sign with some team now, with an eye to playing in the NFL this season. He’s a free agent who can sign with anyone.

It’s not surprising that Demps wants to play in the NFL: I wrote at the time that Demps declared he was focusing on track that it was possible he’d switch his focus to football after the Olympics, because for all but a tiny number of sprinters, there’s more money in football than there is in track.

Well, I can't say I didn't see this coming. At the time I started the thread he wasn't going to be making the trip to London, but due to an injury he was placed on the relay team.

That said, there's no way we even give him a look but I do believe there will be some team who will bring him in to camp. Explosive player when he's healthy.

Nope. He has already proven himself to be a failure.

A failure in what aspect? Contributing to a silver medal losing only to 2 of the fastest sprinters in history is not a failure.

He had a poor senior season, and I don't think anyone would argue against that. What I will say though is that I don't feel like he was properly used his last year at Florida. If a team brings him for a tryout with the preseason rosters expanded, I would say they're very smart for it. Apparently already the Bucs are showing interest. There is simply no room for him on our team, but not every team in the league is as deep as we are.

You're kidding right?

Yep

Just a joke man.

They are saying around here that the Bucs are going to pursue him.

Sounds like a good fit for him. Schiano seems like he intends to use him in the slot and on returns. That team with the addition of Jackson, Nicks, and then drafting Martin has really improved that side of the ball. A creative coach could do a lot of things with him on the field.

Thinks so too, plus he is from Orlando and the Bucs almost signed him this summer.

Tebow put in a good word for him at Jets camp. Them running the spread option(or what ESPN and co. love calling the wildcat) like they did at UF could be pretty deadly.

Tampa sports radio reporting that Demps almost signed with his hometown Bucs however has decided to sign with the Patriots considering they are more of a contender.

Guess he will be a Pat this weekend. :(

As creative as Belichick is this is a scary thought. He's a master of getting mismatches and getting the best out of guys. Look at little Danny Woodhead and how he finds ways to get him into space. I wouldn't expect much from him this year, but down the line this could be interesting.
