BADBOY's 2013 Mock

badboy

Hall of Fame
Earliest ever but several have asked for my thoughts/opinions.
A. Schaub will leave regardless of 2012 season & Yates will start '13. Keenum will be #2. No QB on my board as of today.
B. D.Brown gets $ from Ryans,& Demeco & re-signs.
C. R. Butler gets $ from JJ and Briesel to re-sign.
D. Barwin leaves after great season. We draft OLB (again).
E. Shawn Cody is not re-signed.
F. Posey is or is not successful, we still draft a replacement for WR1 to train.

1. WR Da'Rick Rogers Tennesse (junior) 6'3" 215 He is noted to have "issues" but facts are the 2010 disorderly conduct & resisting arrest after a cop was knocked out were dismissed. He had a run in with strength coach & threatened him & was banned from off season activities for two weeks. Never suspended. Coach McKeefery was in his first year with Tenn & is a former Army performance coordinator Special Forces so may be a tad gung ho. Also note that Tenn Vols hired 7 new assistants. I think Rogers will do fine but expect him to enter draft after this season. He might be better than any WR in 2012 draft.

See this link on his 40 speed: http://www.eagleseyeblog.com/2012-a...-its-the-combine-measurement-that-counts.html

Back in 2009, as expected, several prospects stood out. One of these young men, wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers, ran a blistering 4.34 40-yard dash at a mind boggling 6'2, 197-lbs. *Note this is a hand held device.

2. FS Robert Lester Alabama 6' 210 4.51 I had him as a late first 2012 after a 8INTs 2010. He "dropped off" 2011: 2 INTs but was close on others. He plays excellent (continued)

center field with some ball hawking skills.

3a LG/OT Alvin Bailey Arkansas 6'5" 319
3b OLB Devin Taylor South Carolina 6'7" 248 4.69

4. RB Christine Michaels Texas A&M 5'11" 215 4.48 played in only 8 games prior to injury 149/899 yds (6.0) 8 TDs receiving: 13/174 & 2010 good stats

5a DT/DE Baker Steinkuhler (Dad was 8 year Oiler vet Dean) Nebraska (Crick's teammate) 6'6" 290 4.97
5b (Briesel) ILB Andrew Jackson Western Kentucky 6'1" 262 4.72 109 T, 17 TFL, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF A physical hitter.

6. NT Mister Cobble Kentucky 6' 330 known as a "bowling ball". I became aware of him last season and is reportedly very quick despite his size. Probably a PS guy if Mitchell and Fangupo do well. I'd not be opposed to Mitchell replacing A. Smith eventually.

1. Rogers, I like the player and position chosen, would definitely add quality talent to the WR corp.. I'm thinking he's the new #2 WR and Walter is gone after the 2012 season. Posey is the new #3 in the slot.
2. Lester, very good player that would add some quality depth but I just don't forsee the need at FS yet. Are we losing Manning or Quin?
3. Bailey, I don't know anything about the player but I'm guessing you want him to replace Wade Smith, great size for the position. Maybe.
3b. Taylor, it would really suck to lose Barwin but if he has another great year he'll be very expensive in FA. I can understand a depth pick here. Getting a 3rd round comp. pick for Mario will be key next year as I think we'll have alot of holes to fill next year in the draft.
4. Michaels, good size, speed, and productivity as a possible replacement for Tate a year early. Hopefully we trade Tate and get something of value for him.
5. Steinkuhler, is he a depth pick when either Crick or Jameson take Antonio Smith's spot on the D-line?
5b. Jackson, I don't know anything about the player yet but don't really forsee the need for depth at ILB yet.
6. Cobble, PS emergency NT behind Mitchell and Fangupo, I can see that. I like Mitchell at NT especially with his added bulk. I just don't think Mitchell is quick enough for DE duties to replace Smith.

Nice job, definitely adds some talent and depth. I'm working on a terribly early 2013 mock as well, I'll post in a few days, still working on positions.

2. Lester, very good player that would add some quality depth but I just don't forsee the need at FS yet. Are we losing Manning or Quin? Strengthening the position for now & eliminating backups. Manning may be gone 2013.
3. Bailey, I don't know anything about the player but I'm guessing you want him to replace Wade Smith, great size for the position. Maybe. Smith gone after 2012, someone better replace him

5. Steinkuhler, is he a depth pick when either Crick or Jameson take Antonio Smith's spot on the D-line? Folks focusing on Crick versus Jamison but Steinkuhler may be better than both
5b. Jackson, I don't know anything about the player yet but don't really forsee the need for depth at ILB yet. Brady James has 1 year deal so draft his replacement or at least Sharpton's

Respnse in bold & look forward to your mock.

Hell of a mock for being this early!

Rodgers- I love this pick. I forget which thread it was in, but I pointed this guy out as an early target for the Texans. Big, strong, fast, he has it all. He drops due to a lack of hype and off the field issues.

Lester- Will he be here? If so, I like it. Depth is important, and really behind Manning we dont have a guy who can start in case of emergency.

Bailey- Depth on the OL is always good. I dont know a lot about the player, but I like the position.

Taylor- Again, I like going the position. OLB will likely be taken in just about every draft at some point, and Taylor is a good one. It would suck to lose Barwin, but it is a possibility.

Michaels- I cant get on board with this one. I dont think a RB will be taken, as I doubt Tate goes anywhere, and I really like Meggett for the 3rd RB role. Still shocked he went UDFA. Now, even if we needed to grabe a RB, there are other guys I like around this area- Burkhead from Nebraska in particular.

Steinkuhler- Yet again, depth. I like it, though I dont know much about the player.

Jackson- I really like going ILB, but I would have addressed it earlier. James and Dobbins are stop gaps, and I just dont think Sharpton is a starting caliber player. However, around this slot Larrimore from UCLA has me intrigued.

Cobble- Sign me up

To get Rodgers you better be willing to do a ATL/Cleve trade. Rodgers is going in the top 5 after he tests out at the combine.

Give me one of the top QB's if we're going to make that type of trade.

Franchise QB is a must if Schaub cant stay healthy.

Here's my terribly early 2013 mock draft. Obviously most or all of this will change numerous times between now and April 2013, it's almost laughable to do a mock this early and I found it harder to do than our final 2012 mocks. Mine is based on Schaub, Brown, and Barwin staying. I think there's a real good chance Antonio Smith, Rashad Butler, Kevin Walter, Owen Daniels, Bradie James, and Sean Cody are gone after the 2012 season.

1. DaRick Rogers-WR, new #2 WR after Kevin Walter leaves and adds starter level quality to the WR corp. Maybe Walter stays for a year since he renegotiated his contract to a lower price.
2. Sharrif Floyd-DE, this could actually be our biggest need to fill next off season as I see Antonio Smith gone after 2012. I know Floyd is currently listed as a 3-4 round pick but I think by April he'll be much higher. Adds some size to the LDE position.
3. Kyle Fuller-CB, adds some quality depth to our young CB corp. and solidifies it for the next few years.
3b. Jake Stoneburner-TE, this was the hardest pick to make. I'd really like a better quality TE since I think there's a decent chance OD could be gone after next season but I'm just not impressed with next years group of TE's. This pick could easily change.
4. Xavier Nixon-OT, this guys got talent and speed but lacks bulk. Adding some weight shouldn't be hard on his 6'06" frame. Rashad Butler leaves and Newton takes his place with Nixon as the new swing OT. This year in college and next year as OT depth will give him the time to add some bulk. He could easily go much higher than this if he has a great year.
5. Nico Johnson-ILB, quality rotational ILB to replace Bradie James and has great size. He also could go much higher if he has a great year.
5b. Sheldon Richardson-DT, Sean Cody leaves and Richardson and Fangupo compete for the DT rotation spot with Mitchell. Needs to add some bulk but again that shouldn't be hard for these young guys.
6. Braden Hansen-OG, good size and skill for the position, improves our OG depth. If he has a good year he also could go higher than this.
7. Rashard Hall-FS, size, speed, and experience. Pushes Nolan and Demps for a backup spot.

Well there it is, my first terribly early 2013 mock. This should make for a good laugh 11 months from now.

Thanks 65. Yeah I remember responding to your post on Rogers in that thread as your comment were right on target. My concern is he will rise out of our reach but there are about 6 WRs that should go first round (as of now) & hopefully we can get him.

Lester is ranked #62 by CBS NFLdraftscout so is in position to be there. I do predict he will have a good season and may not be there round 2.

Appreciate yopur comments!

You definietly could be correct.

#2 DE, I think Jamison and Crick will have a season to show us what they can do. Unless they fail, my opinion is use a later round "high risk, high reward" on DE. That was my thinking with Steinkuhler. Your 3, 4 & 7 are on my radar also but think Hall may move up. Enjoyed the read. Good work!

I really can't even wrap my head around a mock at this point...

Right now it's just a good list of guys to look at and pay attention to for me...

something to do while waiting for college season & to exchange players to follow. Hopefully, all 2012 draft selections will start & reduce needs for 2013......:kitten:

That's exactly what these mocks are this time of year, just guys to keep an eye on next college season, and like BB said something to pass the time.

here is another 2013 mock that I've not seen before. If OL Barrett Jones Alabama (taken by Detroit #24) falls to us, I think he'd be my pick. Dude is very good at OT & OG and is to play center this year.

26. Houston Texans
Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU*
Has a quick first step, but will need to add bulk to be more than a rush specialist. Mingo could be the Aldon Smith of the 2013 NFL Draft.

no way Mingo after Mercilus :koolaid:

Barwin, Brown & Schaub will all be resigned. mark it down & adjust accordingly.
I just don't see how they can afford that especially if Schaub and Barwin have good years. Brown may go to pro bowl & is most important to re-sign imo.

the one who worries me is Cushing. he is elite with most market value. Texans can afford the three mentioned stretching out to Cushing however may be too much, but I stand by my words; Barwin, Brown & Schaub will remain Texans :logo:

I agree with BL, Brown, Barwin, and Schaub will be the primary targets to be re-signed and I think Smith will succeed, all will be back. I think they'll find the money by making salary cap cuts to Antonio Smith, and then possibly Sean Cody, OD, Kevin Walter, Antoine Caldwell, Wade Smith, and Rashad Butler. I don't know if they'll all go but I'll bet that several will. They can also save some money by replacing James or Dobbins at ILB with a 3-5 round rookie from next years draft since that position will rotate out of the game so often. Hopefully we also get an injury discount from Schaub who hopefully also knows that we'll be trying to re-sign his primary blind side protection. I think next years offseason has the possibility to have alot more cost saving cuts than this years. This will be where Rick Smith earns his money and shows us if he's stepped up to the level of the upper echelon GM's or not.

I think the Texans will work out a deal with Duane Brown before the franchise tag deadline. Then use the tag on Barwin, and re-sign Schaub to a decent QB deal. I really don't think Schaub will get much interest around the league at the age of 31, and having completed only 2 of 5 season with the Texans so far. I'm sure he will get offers, I just don't think it will be anything the Texans can't match.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brown gets an extension in the middle of this season. Something with a nice big signing bonus. Barwin getting tagged would force him to work out a deal with the team, and I think they can do that. I'm not too worried about the team's continuity right now, but if Schaub plays 16 games and some playoffs this season, we may be forced to tag him instead.

I, also would like to see the 3 back but somebody needs to show me the money. I'm not taking time now but other than maybe Smith & OD I doubt there would be enough money in cutting those guys to sign Brown Butler & Schaub. Matt alone should get a $5m/year increase. Why should Matt give us a discount? QBs are a premium & teams will be lining the Brinks truck up at his door. Not saying he gets a Marfio deal but there will be great offers.

We have another year to go before deciding on Cushing. Sure hope Brady James sticks arouind 2-3 more seasons.

Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing are both scheduled to be free agents in 2014. Either one of them could set the market for the other, so it may be worth it to lock up Cush next offseason to avoid matching some outrageous contract that Clay gets.

BB, what do you think of Justin Hunter-WR from Tennessee instead of DaRick Rogers? I just got finished watching several videos of them both and it seems to me that Hunter is the better athlete. I noticed that Hunter catches the ball with his hands and that Rogers to often makes body catches, also Hunter seems to have a smoother athelticism about him than Rogers and seems to run better routes, though it is a limited video sampling. I know Hunter had the ACL injury last year and that Rogers has a year on him since Hunter will only be a junior next year but if he goes pro after next season Hunter looks to me to be the better pick of the 2. Opinions?

all the more reason to take care of Cushing now :cowboy1:
Show me the money. Where are we getting the cash to sign Bryan and the guys you guarantee we will sign? Barwin, Schaub and D. Brown + major bucks for Cush? We did not save that much by the moves we've made so far.

You have a good eye sir, and his 33 receptions in two years does not give much to form opinion yet for me. Tennessee has a lot to find out this season. Will Junior Zach Rogers step up? Will Da'Rick be able to step away from the coaching issues and have a great season? Hunter is just one of at least 3 to watch. Hopefully, he will be 100% after the ACL and offer
another high selction in the draft.

100 Mario MILLION franchise cornerstone Williams for starters. DeMeco 48 MILLION reasons to leave your lover Ryans. 22 Eric MILLION it's a business Winston. 20 Mike MILLION I'll play with a broken foot Brisel. Leinart, who likes the comeback route, covers Yates, Beck & Keenum. Rackers & Jason Allen along with Jacoby save even more MILLIONS. Nah dude, I'm not feeling you on this one. Texans, with more pieces of the puzzle in place are set to lock things down a bit & show more stability :logo:

I think the $$$$ are going to be there.

If not, Antonio/Wade Smith could be candidates to be cut. You do whatever it takes to sign an all pro like Cushing. He's the top inside LB in the league. IMHO

You dont cut players like Cushing over $$$$.

I don't understand how you can project the figures you used? $100m was from Buffalo, Texans offer was never considered by anyone to be anywhere near that high. You have to subtract the known current salary cap of Texans roster from 2012 NFL cap.

First, Cushing is under contract just to reiterate. Apprx salaries for 2012 Wade Smith $2m + Antonio's $5.5m= $7m to offer Cushing this season to extend or to go to either Schaub, Barwin or D. Brown. Also, as far as we know the NFL cap is to be about the same $123m. We were at that last season and we have escalator contracts to pay in 2012 + rookies and UDFAs.

There was $ supposedly from AJ re-negotiating, loss of Briesel, 2 back up QBs,
Winston, JJ, Ryans, etc. that did not go for Mario. My understanding is that was supposed to extend Brown ($2m for 2011) & he will take $8-$10m extra.

Matt $7m+ will want another $5m & maybe more if he takes team deep in P.O.s.

Barwin at about $1m if he does what we expect will want at least a $5m bump if not more.
That is approx $18m more than last year's total team salary costs. Where is that coming from? I want all these guys back, just don't see how.

I love Barrett jones for this team but he does have an extensive injury history. Mingo is being compared to Dwight freeney and they are saying he's most likely going to ten and (because of his measurables ) possibly top 3 or 4.

The easy answer is if MS gets hurt again you let him walk. I dont know the $$$$ figures, but cutting Cody + whatever Barwins salary was last yr, added together should get you in the ballpark.

I do know the good teams find ways to structure their contracts so that they can keep 10 or so top tier players of their own under contract. (Philly/Pittsburgh/New England/NYG etc...) I expect the Texans FO/cap guy to be able to structure contract like those teams do.

Maybe that's too much to expect.

Have not been in this forum for a while so missed your post. I respect your opinion but you and others keep identifying money to resign certain players. The problem with that is we have other players of great importance to make a decision on. Cutting the Smiths (A&W, did you see what I did there lol.) should take care of Cushing if that is way to go. However this year is last for Cody, Barwin, Duane Brown and Barwin.

Brown has been a very good player in a premium position. Quality LTs don't grow on trees and athletic ones who fit Kubes' style are also fairly rare. As such, I fully expect Brown to get a new contract this summer.

I also expect Cush to get a new deal. He has played well for a couple of years and is the 3 down LB in the 3-4. He should get a new contract sometime before the season.

Barwin has had 1 good year. If he has another good year, I expect the team to offer him a reasonable deal. One thing to remember is his stats may go down. I expect Watt and Reed to have a bigger presence than last year in their second season. Also, last year pretty much only Reed and barwin were the OLBs. This year, Whitney Mercilus joins the group. So, I would not be surprised if Barwin's stats decrease even if his play improves. Since this would only be his second year(and I think his stats decrease), he likely will not get a stupid money deal like Mario. As such, as long as its reasonable, I think the team can keep him.

Cody will likely not get a new deal and will hit the market as a FA. I expect him to be offered a vets contract and for him to go elsewhere.

I would not be surprised to see Antonio Smith cut to free up cash.

Schaub will need to prove himself on the field. He needs to prove he is back to being the prolific passer and not the guy with injury concerns. If he can put in a full 16 week regular season schedule and start every game for the Texans in the Playoffs, then he may get the contract he wants. If he misses a few games, has to be replaced by TJ, is struggling, or is in anyway hampered, he may not be tendered a new contract at all.

will not receive new contract offers this year.

I think Wade's system is set up for the rush to come from any defensive position but I also think historically one OLB gets majority of sacks. I do expect barring injury for Barwin to have majority of sacks & to be offered a huge deal. Same with Schaub, 16 healthy games or not; just offer for each may not be from Texans. Stupid money does not have to be Mario dollars just more than Texans will pay.

Thanks for responding.

Martin's worth has not been proven yet but he seems to be doing well. I still want a WR to groom for our eventual WR1. Unfortunately, I still see Posey as a late season to 2013 season at best. His lack of a season playing last year really hurt. If he was all that anyway.

Well, so far you're 1 outta 6 on who stays and who goes. But it's early. As for getting a WR in the 1st, I'm not sure they will go that route, especially with someone who's been in trouble with the law . At least I hope not. If they do it means a lot went wrong this coming season with AJ, Jean, K-Mart, and Posey. I'm pulling for them to go after a big and fast TE with good hands and good blocking skills in the 1st (hopefully at #32 :)). We are getting kinda thin at TE now and if OD goes down we could be in for trouble. That would leave only GG and Thor left, and we need Thor as FB also.

I do agree we need a NT and I hope we get one early. Maybe in round 2. But I'm also thinking they may go after an ILB and possibly another OLB if Barwin does leave.

Please see my new 203 mocj posted last night. Much has changed since I posted this thread as we all knew it would. Posey is still a concern and today's Houton Chronicle (August 23rd) addresses Posey's rust. I am cool with AJ/Walter and Martin. If Jean can develop, even better. However I did a Virginia Tech WR, TE and a Nose in re-modeled mock. Our opinions of course will change as the season and team progresses.
