More sacks in 2012 - Whitney Mercilus or Mario Williams?

Who ends up with more sacks in 2012?

On an actual NFL field or on XBox?

Mario will definitely have more playing Madden. I hear he's quite the video gamer.

As far as on the field goes...I don't see big money starting Mario's motor or protecting him from injury so I think Mercilus has a 50/50 chance of beating him in sacks.

Agreed. More playing time and fewer guys who will get there first.

I think that Phillips will pin his ears back any time he comes into the game. I say he gets double-digit sacks this year, and he will get there faster than Mario.

Mercilus.

I thin it is a toss up. Mario will see the field more, but Mercilus is surrounded by more talent and a better scheme. It all depends on how motivated Mario is.

Apples and oranges. All I realy care about is the Texans having more W's than any other team in the league.

Mario - Kyle Williams - Dareus - Anderson

Pretty good talent there on the line, and they should improve quite a bit this season.

I don't think there's really a big competition between Mario and Mercilus, if you consider draft status, amount of coin paid, depth chart position (even if Mercilus is #1 he'll be in a rotation) and the nature of their role (Mercilus will be asked to be more versatile than Williams) its a bit of a false comparison even though we've essentially replaced one with the other.

I wrote it somewhere else, but if WM has a similar rookie season to the one Connor Barwin had, that'll be perfectly adequate to me, anything more will be a huge bonus.

Whitney Mercilus is the anti-Mario. Harder working, happy to be here, never seems to stop going.

More proof, it's right in their initials - WM replaces MW

:kitten:

Mario. He's the only good pass rusher there. Texans now have multiple pass rushers so the sacks/tackles will be all over the place.

Mario if he plays 16 games. I expect Mercilus to be great in 2 to 3 years, but i don't see him exceeding the 10 sack level as a rookie, especially with a rotation.

Honestly?

I think it will be close. But like Dutchrudder said, I expect Mario to miss a bunch of games and because of that, Mercilus may actually see the field more even though he's a situational player at first.

I'm wondering, though, if Mercilus will be a "situational" player. I think Wade is going to find some ways to build some packages to get all his best players on the field at the same time. Mercilus may be on the field quite a bit.

But I'm just hoping for a good 8-9 sacks from him. I don't know if that will be enough to overtake Mario.

I think the most realistic answer to this is Mario will end up with more sacks, but when you factor into account salary, then Mercilus provides the better value.

I think if Wade could keep Mario at Mercilus' contract, he'd take Mario every single time.

With that said, Mercilus for DROY!

Mario played 5 games in his career under a defensive coordinator that belonged in the NFL. IF he can stay healthy, he's going to do well.

Mercilus is going to compete for DROY though.

One of the NFLN talking heads picked Mercilus as his post draft pick for DROY. Can't remember which one. Wilcots? Waddle? I know it wasn't Sapp (sorry about the jab, Warren).

Who do you believe will end up with more sacks?

How about making it a value-based poll?:

Who will have the most sacks for every million dollars of cap hit? Mario would have to break the single season sack record simply to keep pace with Mercilus if Mercilus ends up with 3 or 4.

The stat that I'd like to see the Texans improve on isn't sacks. It's fumbles. Mercilus should be the better value considering.

Didn't see immediate comparison's coming at all.

When it comes down to it, barring injury, Mario SHOULD get more sacks for several reasons. The biggest one of all is likely just going to be he's going to see more snaps.

What could be interesting though is IF Whitney's good as advertised it could force Wade (who's already on record saying he's a more polished pass rusher than Reed) to give him more snaps. I think Barwin's going to start regardless because he's the most experienced of the three and I think we're going to want to see what to expect long term from him seeing how its a contract year from what I recall.

Mario is being paid about 8 times more than Merc. I don't think Mario would stand a chance.

What makes you think tjhat the Buffalp DC is legitimate? He had talent last season and where was their D? They have a ton of talent on paper, but so has Houston since 2006. How often did Mario disappear versus dominate with Houston? Mario relies on talent alone and is comfortable letting others do the heavy lifting/motivating. He's made his and it's all about him.

If Mario stays healthy he'll have more sacks. Say whatever you will about Mario, but when he's of a mind to actually play football he's the best.

With all that guranteed money he's making i doubt hre will be to motivated. We have all seen him dissapear from games before, imagine now that he is getting the money anyways.

Plus i dont really care what Mario does from this point on, he isnt wearing the red with and blue anymore, he isnt part of bulls on parade, so who really cares.

People are getting way too excited over Mercilus. If he has 5+ sacks it's a successful rookie campaign.

Barring injury, Williams is an automatic 10+ sack guy every season.

I do not care what you say. I do not care what you do. When the ice cream truck comes through the neighborhood, it knows where I stay." signed Mario Williams

2 to 3 years? what? he is a natural pass rusher, NATURAL. this guy is the 2nd best linebacker on this team already next to Cush. I mean dont get me wrong Barwin is pretty good and Reed is not bad but im talking not only does he have a high motor but hes got the skill and talent to go with it. Reed is pretty slow and some times does not take on blocks very well, Barwin has decent speed but he is just relentless probably has the best cardio and endurance on the team. I think if he focuses on MURKelus like he did with Mario b4 his injury, i think the dude puts up 15 easily... BOOK IT!!!!

Getting way too excited?! 5 sacks? brooks reed got 6 sacks and he has cement in his shoes with Liquid Nails on the bottom of his cleats? Williams and 10 sacks may go in the same sentence but bet this! If Mario gets 10 sacks thats exactly where he stays bc he gets 10 sacks and homeboy thinks hes done his work. hes got the heart of a frickin gerbal man. sheeeeeeeiiiiittttt 10 sacks of Jack N the Crack maybe...

Id take that bet.

If merci gets 15 sacks he will have far exceeded my expectations.

No doubt. Reed didn't get drafted in the high 2nd round because he was slow and anyone thinking Mercilus or Barwin is just simply going to move him out of his spot is foolish.

I think we're going to see the essence of a rotation. 3 above average players, no superstar, just rotating and cleaning up. The only one flaw I see is what of Mercilus' ability (or inability) to drop into a few simple coverages. I think he'll be playing weakside most of the time this season, Barwin and Reed can both play sam over the TE to disguise intentions.

Reed is slow....:clown:

As for the thread, I'll go with last year's winner, Mercilus.

Let's be realistic here. Mercilus may get to 15 sacks eventually but it's highly unlikely he does it on his rookie year. If Mercilus puts 15 sacks next year that would break the rookie sack record. Last year was an anomaly with 12 guys getting more than 5 sacks and the rookie with most sacks (Aldon Smith) had 14. In 2010, there were 2 guys with more than 5 sacks (Suh had the most with 10); in 2009 again only 2 had more than 5 (Orakpo with 11 was the best); in 2008 no rookie had more than 5; in 2007 only 2 had more than 5 (Gaines Adams had the most with 6. Okoye had 5.5).

If Mercilus can get more than 5 sacks next year that would be a great season for a rookie. If he can get to 10 he'd be a premier candidate for DROY.

The rookies were like this last year because the coaches simplified the playbook and made it easy on the rookies because of shortened offseason. Mercilus is being thrown into same situation as Aldon Smith. Just rotational only passing downs and he got 14 sacks. It's not impossible if Kubiak does the same thing simplifying everything for the rookies then he could potentially get 10.

During the entire season, or the first 6 games that Mario is healthy ? :)

Homer hat on, MEEEEEERCILUS!!

Mario is the new Albert Haynesworth. From this point on his career is going backwards. By the fith game he will be getting questioned by the NY media and fans. By the seventh game they will be ridiculing him. Soon after that he will suffer a hamstring injury and be out for the year. :voodoo:

Mercilus will be in the running for DROY. :d:

Then he'll get picked up by the Bill.... hey... wait a minute!! :)
