Week 14 Texan Mock

Hall of Fame
First Round: Josh Chapman, Alabama, NT/NG 6007 316

Dominant, seasoned, another Sabin influenced defensive prospect who adds more talent to front line already playing @ a high level. This is what Championship teams do, they retool & get stronger in the trenches. Have him graded as early second but by time the draft rolls around his stock could rise as 3-4 teams look to enforce middle with smaller, high motor, smart, well coached athletes.

Second Round: Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M, WR 6035 225

Texan WR's play well together, even without big target, stud #1 WR Andre Johnson yet still need another star added to arsenal. Down year for entire Aggie program including firing on former Texan assistant head coach Mike Sherman. Has the same size as Dwight Jones who I had projected in the first round for Texans last week, played through assorted injurys still averaged almost 60 yards per game with 11.3 avg. per catch & 5 TD's. Expected bigger things from Jeff after last season, when he collected 72 receptions, 82 yards per game, 14.81 yards per catch & 12 TD's. Over course of four years @ Texas A&M Fuller caught almost 3,000 yards (2973) 226 receptions & 33 TD's.

Third Round: Phillip Blake, Baylor, Center/OG 6024 320

Blame RG3 if you want but chances are Phillip Blakes stock is also soaring, unlike RG3 it's a given Blake will enter the 2012 NFL draft because he is a senior. Realistic draft grade if Texans want to cover/fill two positions in one. Blake has excellent mobility, plays light on his feet for size & is an excellent athlete who fits ZBS adding both depth & future starting material for Texans.

Fourth Round: Jerry Franklin, Arkansas, ILB 6100 245

Had to also move Jerry higher based on his productivity & need for depth @ ILB. He led a very good defensive Arkansas unit in tackles with with 93. Has the height weight ratio to fill inside running lanes, sure tackler, high motor/effort who plays with passion. Also had 10 TFL for loss, 4 passes broken up, 5 QB hurries & one fumble recovery for a 94 yard TD.

Fifth Round: David Paulson, Oregon, TE 6040 244

Owen & Dresseen proved yesterday how important the TE position is for the Texans. I think the league is catching on & TE position is becoming more of a commodity, not just another blocker @ scrimmage. Paulson is a sure handed option in passing game, excellent down field blocker & give Texans the best TE receiving corps in the NFL.

Sixth Round: Robert Golden, Arizona, CB/SS 5110 200

Glover Quin doesn't get near enough credit (had to go back & check his vertical 38") the move to SS was overdue & it's obvious his natural NFL position. Robert Golden is very similar in a lot of ways. I will be following his workout among many others to see how he eventually grades out but for now he makes looks like an excellent back-up to Glover & special teams player moving forward. Third on club with 60 tackles in 2010, 69 tackles in 2011 starting CB but has experience playing SS as well.

Seventh Round: G.J. Kinne, Tulsa, QB 6020 230

Using last pick (Mason compensatory null/void) on another QB. Giving credit for this selection to rmartin65. From Mesquite Texas, he had a passer rating of 147.53 passing for 2859 yards, on 228 completions out of 355 attempts. 25 TD's & 12 INT's. Three years of starting experience also threw for 3650 yards 31 TD's & 10 INT's in 2010. 2009 2732 yards, 22 TD's 10 INT's. Like Case Keenum here as well but Kinne seems to have the stronger arm of the two & better size moving foward.

If there is any place the Texans can use a new starter, those would be the ones I'd pick.

I love Jj & I love KDub, but Julio Jones on this team (or AJ Green for that matter) would have been sick.

Our run defense saved face overall, but when I saw Cedric Benson break that big run.... I was like.....

As is stands right now I really like this Mock.

I love Chapman...I had mocked him in the 2nd round before, but you are probably right that he is gone by then.

I really want a bigger, athletic corner on the team though. I have mocked trading up for Kirkpatrick but that is unlikely. Gonna start looking for guys in the 3rd round that fit the bill...

Once you get through the elite guys it's hard to find a guy with size that stands out. Donnie Fletcher from Boston College goes 6'1" and he can be had in the third round. Other than him, you're looking at a a large group of guys that goes 5'10" and 5'11".

I don't really put a lot of importance on size for a corner, as long as they have the necessary skills. Revis is only 5'11" 198 and he's probably the most physical guy around.

A guy with size would be nice, but I see it more as a luxury than a necessity. Even in the NFL, there are not a whole lot of guys with Kirkpatrick's size and skill set.
 
The one downside of having such a good football team is that for every win in the playoffs we drop lower and lower in the draft. It's a problem that hopefully we'll have for a long time to come and essentially means that we have to draft players a round early if we want them. I really like your 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks. I think that's way to early for Blake, and we've already discussed Paulson a couple times. I like the Golden pick as SS depth, an upgrade behind Quin is definetly needed, but not as a CB. I don't know anything about Kinne.

You'll also be in less need of instant starters if you're a perennial play-off team. So it kind of works out.

I agree with what you are saying. That said, I've seen our corners get spaghetti eaten off the top of their heads a lot this year.

I'm not a size guy really. I'm a skill guy.

Would you guys like to see Chapman playing nose tackle for the Houston Texans? He commands double teams, stuffs interior running lanes & free's up LB's Highsmith & Upshaw, instead it would be DeMeco & Cushing.

I posted this mock before news of Mike Brisel playing on a broken leg this past weekend (he is the ultimate warrior) any questions about former 3rd rd. pick (#77) out of Alabama Antoine Caldwell are about to be answered. Both interior linemen have been plauqed with injurys difference is Brisel has been able to play through them, until now. Both Caldwell & Blake offer Center/OG versatility value & both have played @ a high level in College. Antoine Caldwell came out 6033 307 had a 4th/5th rd. grade (ourlads) ran 5.27 forty, benched 220 23 times & had long arms 34". Texans drafted him as their future starting Center but Myers has developed into more than a stop gap Center, in fact some say he may even be Pro-Bowl material. So Caldwell slides over to RG with Brisel out. I see Baylor Center/OG equal if not better down the road, only time will tell & what team thinks enough to grab him earlier than projected.

I didn't realize that Brisel's injury was a reoccurring Lisfranc problem that he has had three surgeries on. That scares the hell out of me even though the guy is obviously tough as nails to play through the pain. That might change the way I view the draft regarding OLinemen.

Another thing that is premature (but hey we are talking next year here) is that Wade might bail and another DC might have a different set of priorities come draft time.

Day before the next big game (Carolina) & Texans continue to get thinner in key positions. I could flip both players @ this stage, either one would be too good of value to pass on w/late 5th. Since Paulson is a personal favorite & natural fit in Texan offense with Dreessen playing hurt/free agent I'm going to flip these guys/picks. TE is actually THE key position in Texan play action offense that makes it go even when everything else is struggling or breaking down.

Now that it's official, Poe is entering the 2011 NFL Draft, projected late first round, Texans select #26th as it stands, this is about right & where talent/potential meets need bolstering the Texan interior DL. Poe will be one of those ascending players because people, media, scouting community don't really know a lot about him but will be impressed enough @ the combine, along with for his pro-day workouts get multiple offers to visit teams for private workouts (Texans will be one of those teams). That workout will be key & influential in the draft if Wade believes he's found himself a franchise NT for his 3-4 scheme.

The TE is central to Kubiaks offense leaning heavily on Owen Daniels for production while Dresseen feeds underneath & in open seams often neglected by opposing defenses. But that is in the past as teams focus on shutting down the TE position with nickle & safety help instead of LB's. The league is also catching on to the value of a TE position becoming more of a weapon with favorable match-ups, not just another blocker on line of scrimmage. Paulson is a sound blocker, fits play action offense, has ability to run after the catch, excellent down field blocker already with big play mentality.

This is an excellent draft. I like all players and think Fuller could do well under Texans' coaching staff. I would go Keenum in 7th as I have watched him and no little about 65's guy.

Fuller is about 10th WR on my board. not sure if you think that is fairly valued or not? which is why I expect him to still be available late 2nd rd. Wright, Jones, McNutt, Sanu, Streeter, Adams & Broyles are all ahead of him. Some people may like Toon or Criner more? just remember this is end of second pick.

I know Fuller has been injured this yr. But he didn't seem fast or very sudden out of his breaks. He also dropped quite a few drops this yr. In short Fuller played like a 5/7th rd pick this yr. This may have been due to injury. But I wouldn't be willing to risk a 2nd rd pick on him.

fair enough. when we drop into the late 2nd early 3rd grouping they all seem reasonably similar. hopefully in the coming months we'll be able to separate them appropriately.

If you want a fast WR, Hilton may be a guy to look at later in the draft. Some say that he reminds them of Antonio Brown. He's a poor mans Broyles. IMHO

McNutt= Fuller, without injuries. 3rd rd. IMHO

If you want to take a chance on a guy with unreal talent then Streeter would be the pick. (Young Plaxico) 6'5 runs 4.4, had a crappy QB. I personally would rather take a chance on a guy like Streeter in the 2nd than Fuller in the 2nd. High risk/reward, but I'm a risk taker. Especially if AJ says Steeter is worth it.
 
For now I have to agree with SteelB, the 2nd round seems a little early for Fuller. I'm thinking he goes in the 3rd round. The Combine will be very important for Fuller. With a good Combine he could move up to the 2nd round. He seems to have the talent but seems to lack some motivation to go along with the injuries. Also this is a very deep draft at WR with lots of guys who performed better than Fuller this year so he could get overshadowed in the draft.

Which is precisely the reason I think the Texans need to draft a WR in the 1st or trade back in to the later 1st or early 2nd round. I don't think they just need to find a replacement for Walter or Jacoby, I think they need to start grooming AJ's successor! Somebody like Jones or McNutt could be groomed for AJ's position while playing in Walter's or Jacoby's position now. Fuller would probably not even replace Jacoby on the depth chart. Walter and AJ will both be 31 next year with 10 years in the NFL. How long can they hold up? They may need to get 2 WR's in this draft!

Been there done that. The key piece of puzzle will be free agency. If texans can address WR early in FA it would take pressure off forcing a high pick or multiple picks. I fully expect Rick Smith to come through & address this need setting the table for another soild draft like this one :htown2atx:

I know there are some good WR's coming out in FA, but the question is, are we going to have enough $$ to sign one of them and resign Mario, Arian, and Myers? Or, do you think we let Mario go? :thinking:

If you let MW walk you have plenty of room to sign a FA WR2 or CB2

I would let MW walk and spend the $$$$ on other needs.

I don't expect the Texans to let Mario Williams walk. Expect them coming to terms & if not Texans will franchise him. Franchise values actually went down for 2012 from 2011. The price tag for a DE is 10.6 mil down from 13 mil in 2011. LB is 8.8 mil.

Free agency wise would love Texans to go after Steve Johnson Buffalo. But there are many quality WR's who are gonna be free agents this off-season like Mario Manningham, Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn (we need a returner too) Robert Meachem, Greg Camarillo, Dwayne Bowe, Pierre Garcon, Maurice Stovall, Andre Caldwell, Earl Bennett, Harry Douglas & Early Doucet to name but a few......

I think Mario will sign a long term deal that reduces his salary cap hit and that money can be used. I'm thinking Mario will be looking for a huge upfront bonus & guaranteed salary money to make up for no bonus in his first deal. McNair likes the guy and wants him to retire a Texan. Bob wants AJ, Demeco and Mario's jerseys in the rafters. Cushing will get there a bit later.

If tagged, he will get 120 % of 2011 salary and his position does not enter into it.

You're probably right.

I wouldn't sign him long term though.

I question MW's passion for the game. Not his athletic ability. This goes back to his college day for me.

The longer the better imo as you guarantee only first 2-3 depending on the amount of the base. A 6 year $72m with $25m upfront; $47m over 6 is $8 + $4 for bonus = $12m cap and apprx $4m lower than 2011 cap.

Even if dispassionate he has done pretty well.

BB for Texans GM :bigboss: From our discussions I know that you know more about football talent than Smithiak does and you seem to have grasped the contract side of the business as well. Now as soon as you get into office though we'll start bashing you also. :aggressive:

6151 you crack me up. Thanks for compliments. Part of the problem is we can't figure some things like exact salary of Mario. Then you have to think about how much Mario means personally to McNair. He values human relationships with his players and coaches/management. He wants to be on cutting edge with Smith and Kubiak & like a benevolent father he wants them to succeed. He will make sacrifices of himself to make his people look good. He is the anti- Jerry Jones. He froze out John MClain when he attacked judgement of drafting Mario WIlliams as if McClain was attacking his family.

Never can tell what he will do in free agency, draft or his current players. He allows his coaches to run the team & we know Kubiak's loyalty to former coaches can be detrimental.

Just curious, is Worthy (Mich st) not liked around here or do people just think he wont be available? I love the fire he plays with and his ability to penetrate seems like a perfect fit for this defense. Would love to see him between Smith and Watt.

I like his game too, reminds me of Nick Fairley, last year @ Auburn drafted by Detroit. Very disurptive, explosive first step just not your typical 3-4 nose run stuffer like Poe of Chapman. Depends on Wade his draft grade would seem to support a first round grade.

At 310 with his explosiveness and nasty demeanor I think he could handle DT or NT (whatever) in our scheme with no problems. Playing him along side of Smith and Watt would be fun to watch. I seriously doubt he will be around when we pick but if he slid just a little I would trade up for him without hesitation. A perfect fit IMO.

Just curious, is Worthy (Mich st) not liked around here or do people just think he wont be available? I love the fire he plays with and his ability to penetrate seems like a perfect fit for this defense. Would love to see him between Smith and Watt.

I didn't see him play during the year but just watch a bunch of video on him and I like what I see alot. He reminds me of Brandon Thompson from Clemson, similar size and athleticism. For his size he's got great athleticism, quickness, and speed, he also seems to hold up to the double teams well so he must have good strength. I noticed that he's inconsistent with his pad level, when he keeps them low he's very explosive and gets into the backfield quickly when he gets to high the O-line stands him up and neutralizes him. That should be easy to fix. He seems to have the frame to handle a few extra pounds which I think would be a benefit to him, I'd want him to play around 320 lbs. without losing his athleticism but that should be pretty easy to do and honestly it's nitpicking. If we want him I think we'd have to take him in the 1st round though since I don't think he'd be available at our pick in the 2nd.

As much as I have praised and pushed Poe, I'm thinking Wade will not select a NT in first. He should understand we desperately need WR help. I started researching another option at the Nose about 3 weeks ago and really am warming up to the guy. Not sure if he will end up on my end of season mock but looking good now. I'll share info when I've had a bit more time to evaluate as film is very scarce.

How fast do you require a 6ft 4in 330 pound man to run? He will be timed @ combine & his pro-day. The main number to look for would be his splits, primarily first 10 yards to measure explosiveness. I also expect a decent short shuttle. Other than that, lifting, broad jump & vertical they always have one on one's which will have to do until someone comes up with actual game film.

Game film seems to be the big issue with Poe. I've read/heard several times that there is no game footage on him out there yet, which I find hard to believe. I would think that Memphis has some kind of video documentation person/crew for coaches and players to review game film to critique how the players are doing.

As for speed and quickness, I think Wade likes them pretty quick off the snap. If Poe blows them away at the Combine with his quickness, it might be too much for Wade to pass on. I just wonder how motivated Poe is. Is he a high motor guy? Somehow I don't get that impression yet. Still some questions to be answered and some should be answered at the Combine. JMO.

You say you have not seen footage, but you dont think he is a high motor guy? How did you come to that assumption?

Poe is a high motor guy, and has adequate quickness. By all accounts he works hard in both the weight room and in video.

And I would like people to stop believing the fallacy that Wade prefers small NTs. He works with what he has. In his 4 stops prior to Houston, Wade had 2 larger NTs and 2 smaller NTs, which shows no favoritism either way.

If you want some game film check out Paulson when Oregon plays Wisconsin Monday. It has been somewhat dissapointing this year from the TE position, thinking it was one of Texans strongest offensive positions. Haven't really checked the numbers but Owen Daniels fantasy value seems like its dropped while a guy like Gronkowski takes league by storm in only his second year. The TE has a real high value in Kubiak's offense, this trend needs to reverse itself & Paulson is an upgrade to Dreessen who is a free agent.

Both Fuller & Blake had great bowl games. Fuller seemed like he caught almost every targeted throw snatching 7 for 117 yards & back-corner NFL caliber TD to send Aggie's ahead for good. Excellent hands, concentration to finish play.

Blake was a beast. He pretty much stoned Alameda Ta'amu. He was so dominant in fact that Ta'amu just released downfield to try & make a play.

Both remain solid picks for the Texans where I have them selected.

It seems to me that Dreesen has taken away TDs from OD. I had OD on my fantasy team, and watching games OD would move us down the field and JD seemed to catch TDs. I think you have to factor the QB situation in as well. I like Paulson, but with OD, JD, Casey (I think he'll see some reps at TE next year - but that's pure speculation) I don't see picking a TE. If we do Paulson's a nice player. I'd also like to see Graham get a little pt.

Think of it as more BPA. Rick Smith has done this more than once. Two examples that come to mind where Connor Barwin who had a first rd. Grade & Casey despite drafting TE previous round.
