Renegade Miami football booster spells out illicit benefits to players

KEARNY, N.J. – A University of Miami booster, incarcerated for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, has told Yahoo! Sports he provided thousands of impermissible benefits to at least 72 athletes from 2002 through 2010.

In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.

Also among the revelations were damning details of Shapiro’s co-ownership of a sports agency – Axcess Sports & Entertainment – for nearly his entire tenure as a Hurricanes booster. The same agency that signed two first-round picks from Miami, Vince Wilfork and Jon Beason, and recruited dozens of others while Shapiro was allegedly providing cash and benefits to players. In interviews with federal prosecutors, Shapiro said many of those same players were also being funneled cash and benefits by his partner at Axcess, then-NFL agent and current UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. Shapiro said he also made payments on behalf of Axcess, including a $50,000 lump sum to Wilfork, as a recruiting tool for the agency.

Our very own AJ (Details of AJ's Involvement) was linked to Shapiro as well many other current and former players. However, AJ didn't seem to be as involved as many of the other players.

Darryl Sharpton also mentioned by Shapiro. link

Still doesn't look as bad as the what he alleges to have provided for Vince Wilfork & Devin Hester.

The piece on AJ seems to point out that he was only bought drinks and access to a VIP area of a club. If he was of age and this is a violation in the NCAA, then I think the NCAA needs to rethink their rules.

This "amateur athlete" stuff has got to stop. Where in America is it illegal to receive charitable goods except for college athletes?

This just in. A booster or anyone giving players benefits has you by the nuts.

When are colleges going to learn that you have to keep tabs on your high profile athletes, and entire football program if you want it to stay clean?

My question is why are these gifts illegal for college athletes, except for the NCAA trying to play up to the idea of the "purity" of the sport by having unpaid athletes?

I really don't follow college football, so these rules don't make any sense to me.

When I went on recruiting trips they bought stuff for us....food, club access...Girls...

The girls were called "guides", but when we were getting ready to go to the club they picked us up from the hotel and went back to their house so they could wink"get ready"wink...Then in the club they treated us like kings.

Good times. Memories.

One theory might mean that if a booster gives a player X benefits and keeps doing it, the player may become dependent on the booster. The booster could then tell the player, I need you to win the game but not cover the spread. A dropped ball, a stumble, or maybe a holding penalty can appear harmless on the field, but in reality has been done to help the booster win a bet.

Sports gains fans where teams are historically poor becuase there is belief that any given year, the team can come together and win. If point shaving, or any other aspects are introduced, it eliminates the purity of sports and makes people think everything is already planned out.

At that points legitimate sports become nothing more than wrestling.

A buddy got recruited by Harvard and they gave him free weed, booze, and women during his visit.

Harvard!

NCAA is a joke.

That is awesome. A higher learning institution bought you hookers. I love it. My question is what did these guides get in return for sleeping with recruits?

As I mentioned in other thread. UTSA hired former Miami head coach Larry Coker on the basis of what he did at Miami....this cant be good. Our AD Lynne Hickey is prominent member of NCAA councils. She cant be having a good day right now. I dont know you start up a football program and the guy who is heading it up was around when all this happened. Not good.

Why would women subject themselves to something like this? As a player I would be ashamed of myself.

He hasn't been named in the story as far as I know but players he coached have been.

There was a story about JaMarkus McFarland (or something like that) where this was being done to attract him to different schools. Texas was the one who gave him women and stuff to entice him to come play at UT (he went to Oklahoma).

Miami should get the death penalty, nuff' said. Miami's Dean should also loose her job and possibly go to jail for her involvement.

Why would women subject themselves to something like this?

If the women are hookers they got cash and possibly other financial perks(maybe paying off credit card debt, cars, etc). If the women were students, then maybe they also got cash, got to party with the football team etc. Some women really get off on being with well known people. Since the football teams are the most popular/famous students at a school, they may derive some satisfaction from being connected to those people.

Sad, but some people base their self worth on who they are connected to.

Yeah, and they don't even have to be paid sometimes. I was friends with a couple walk-on football players at A&M, and at parties they would get a ton of attention. One awesome party I went to my junior year was attended by many of the football team starters and the Aggie Dance Squad (cheerleaders for the baskeball team). They were incredibly hot and swarmed around the football guys. Even the walk-on players got a lot of action from just being on the team. Maybe it's just the culture of being in college, but there certainly was no shortage of women for players. They are local celebs, the reality TV stars of campus, and when the world is seemingly limited to just a few thousand people, they become demigods to some extent. But it sure is fun while it lasts.

Well...I dunno if I'd call them hookers....But technically that's probably what they were....

But they were actually students at the school...one of them was a trainer for the team...

Im sure she helped you get nice and limbered up. haha - good for them. Using what God gave them.

Being mature is not something running rampant with highschool seniors. Heck, I had just turned 17 at the time. I didn't turn 18 until my freshman year of college...

My younger brother that plays RB for SFA was even younger than I was...He didn't go on any recruiting visits, but he didn't turn 17 until his freshman year...

I'm not saying it is a good situation for everyone. But my point was that for 16,17,18, 19 year olds it's kind of hard to turn down sex from attractive older women. It's easy for folks to say as adults what they would and wouldn't do, but you have to remember than a lot of recruits aren't even 18 when they go on these visits..

when i was that age a stiff wind around a pretty lady who deprive me of rational thought...i agree you cant blame teenage boys for acting like teenage boys.

Yeah, my "student guides" never knew their way around campus. Knew their way around a lap dance and "other goodies", not school. Ah, the good ole days. If my parents only knew what happened on those trips, they never would have sent me.

NCAA, stop fighting a fight that cannot be won. Simply let go and allow high profile student-athletes or any student-athletes get what they can while in college from booster gifts to apparel contracts and paid appearances. What are you so afraid of? Is it that you truly want to protect these kids from malicious boosters or companies who are trying to use them for personal gain, or are you looking out for your own bank account?

OK, lets skip the charade. Why doesn't the NFL just set up a Farm System so these players don't have to live the "lie" of being a 'student-athlete'?

One thing I don't understand is the fact that people suggest athletes don't get a fair share of the pie.

BULL$HIT!

You're getting stipends, almost a full ride in some cases, a chance to network and improve job prospects in case you don't pan out as a football player, all the "academic assistance" you want, and god-like status to the point where you can pull a Vince Young or Sergio Kindle and still get away with it.

Heck I would volunteer as a human dummy tackling thing if I got half those perks.
