NFL Day 3: Rounds 4-7

Yates is a prototypical backup. Good size and very accurate. I like it.

So do I. Their is nobody on the roster worth developing into a solid back up, or if the worst case scenario happens as a starter.

I wonder if the lack of rookie free agency played into this some.

Sigh, goodbye Powe, Williams, Williams, Carter, Romeus, and others I would rather have taken instead of a QB we could have likely got in the 7th or undrafted.

Only bright side is I do really want someone to replace DanO, so now I have high expectations for him

We finally take an offensive player... and it`s a QB. I don`t hate the pick, but I think we might have found a player that could contribute right away (whether it is ST or backup). I mean, Powe, Carter, Williams and some other guys are still on the board. And we are thin at NT, OLB and at S.

But well - insurance aint bad, and we might be able to trade him down the line for a second rounder...

w/Powe or McDaniel pick I was all set to give the Texans grade A but this hurts, what was the fear? a fear of somebody else selecting him? wait, hold your junk till late no need to jump this late on a pick for a PS player :rake:

A late 5 th carries enough weight for you to use ut as a basis to drop a team a letter grade? Whatever, but then again I think grading a draft thecday it finishes is stupid.

Mayock is a BIG fan of Yates on NFL network.

i watched the NC/LSU game on prime time this past year, i thought he looked pretty good..but you just confirmed it for me..if mayock likes him, i like him & this was a pretty good pick.

Actually this is exactly what the Pats would do. They a developmental player late, develop and then keep or trade em for picks later on.

i understand but we have lots of needs! Plus we are not the Pats, just wannabees! Oh well, I hope they know wat they are doin'!:texflag:

it's the 5'th round. we just drafted 5 defensive players. I'm ok with best player available at this point.

Exactly. Kubiak has a chance to really increase the value of Yates over the next few years. This is the biggest reward vs risk at this point in the draft.

It looks like we are AGAIN going to go through this draft without a serious safety prospect. From what I hear, Keo is more of a special teamer.

Maybe we've just overvalued some of the safeties this year. Some of the guys I liked the most are still on the board.

This was a thin draft for safeties in all rounds let alone the 5th round. I think its a long shot at best you find a "serious safety prospect" with the 152 pick. I wasnt look for a developmental QB with the pick but I would say a kid with most of the tools with bad technique tutored under Kubiak has a better chance of panning out for the Texans than a long shot safety.

Quinn is going to be moved to safety and if Free Agency ever begins I bet Wade finds a no name guys who plays the position the way he likes it.

Plus it takes balls for this staff that needs to produce this season to take a developmental QB.

I would not replace Dan until round seven or an UDFA. Especially when Kubiak and Smith have jobs on the line.

ESPN guys on T.J. Yates:

Mel Kiper: Played only 1 year of HS football. Good first year, then broken ankle, ok JR year, had to win the job last year. Missed Greg Little but improved leaps and bounds. Good job spreading the field. Pocket awarness 10x better thn Gabbert. Arm strenght average.

Trent Dilfer: Can spit the ball out. Is a sleeper starter. Toughest kid at QB outside of Locker.

Seahawks take Mark LeGree, S, Appalachian State

Lions - Doug Hogue, OLB, Syracuse

Trent Dilfer just professed his love for TJ Yates on ESPN. Seriously, a 5th rounder that could become a nice backup or that we could trade in the future, why all the hate?

I would normally agree with you, but look at the way the draft has gone. Qbs are being taken earlier than we thought. If you want your guy you gotta grab him. I mean, Newton,
Locker, Gabbert, and Ponder went in the top 12, whereas Dalton and Kaepernick went 35/36.

Plus, if we got say Chris neild or Anthony Gray in the 7th, would you still be disappointed?

:toropalm: A wasted pick! That's why we are not the Pats, Ravens, steelers, & GB! Could have gotten him in the 7th! Our draft grade just took a nose dive!

Really? Your worried about our trade grade.

Who cares what the talking heads say.

Yates is the kind of guy who as a back up can manage the team and the offense when needed. Would not be surprised if he beats Dan O out before the end of the year.

NFL network guys like the pick of Yates
ESPN all the announcers on board had more than wonderful things to say about him to the extent of the sleeper of all QBs and he is the real thing expecially the last college year just improved immensely. Both networks say it so I'm good with it...what do I know

Draft grades thus far-

JJ Watt- A+
Brooks Reed- A
Brandon Harris- A
Rashad Carmichael- C
Shiloh Keo- B-
TJ Yates- B-

Assigning grades like in college (A worth 4, B+ 3.3, B- 2.7, etc) and we get- 3.23333 = B

I am bumping it up to a B+ due to hitting on the early picks

I am not talking like a 2 round draft pick for them. I am thinking like middle round picks for teams who need some decent back-ups.

If they are decent backups, why would we want to get rid of them? ;) I dont think either of those guys have much value. Perhaps a 6th or 7th round pick.

North Carolina has been full of NFL talent the past couple years but what have they done? its a great College environment I get that, love watching their home games too so I have followed their program. He does have decent ball velocity but he has had great targets to throw to who have the ability to adjust to his throws, Greg Little this past season & two years ago had Hakeem Nicks & Brandon Tate. I do like both his 5 & 7 step drops but I don't recall too may three step, quick decision type of throws. I like Kubiak to develop a QB, seems kinda of silly not to take advantage of his mentoring abilities.

Yeah, but then he's available to all 32 teams as well. And likely at the same time as veteran FA if they like the guy, you take now go give yourself less to do when FA starts.
I think he might replace Matt down the road maybe.
