Aaron Williams vs. Prince Amukamara

El Tejano

Hall of Fame
So I got to see the segment on NFL Network where Steve Mariucci was interviewing Williams and Amukamara. I'm sorry, but I came away more impressed with Williams. During the interview Williams was able to give more information on his technique than Amukamara was. When Mariucci showed him how he could beat his technique, Williams was able to give a counter move to answer Mariucci's. Prince was just there...

Then when they were showing some of Williams highlights, even Amukamara said "What great body control" as Williams was intercepting a pass in the endzone and coming down in bounds.

Then when I go back and look at UT's national championship game Aaron Williams pretty much shut down Julio Jones. I strongly believe that if UT's defense as a whole didn't suck last year, Aaron Williams would've been a top 3 CB.

Then later in the segment both Mariucci and Mayock talk about Williams having more value because they believe he can play safety.

I wouldn't mind going with Williams over Amukamara.

at 11? im not good with that.

That's my issue too though. I don't feel comfortable getting Amukamara at #11 if I feel you can get a better player in Williams but I also don't feel Williams is worth the #11 pick. Any chance he last past round 1?

no way williams gets out or round 1, expect a run on corners late 1st. pitt showed alot of interest in him at pro day

Mayock does not have Williams in first. I have nothing against the Prince but when I watched him he never seemed to be a solid CB or better say did not do much to impress me. He may well be the #11 but I hope not.

i think prince is worth it at 11. prince got torched against blackmon, but that guy is just a physical beast. besides that game he earned the respect of coaches not throwing at him.

This isn't the order in which I think they will be selected, but this is in order of how good I think they will wind up being:

1. Peterson
2. Williams
3. Davon House
4. Amukamara
5. Brandon Harris

People worry too much about value. If we drafted Williams at #11 the fans would freak out. If he ended up as a Pro Bowl CB I don't think too many people would still complain about us "reaching" for him in the draft.

I don't think we should go CB in the first, but if we do, I like Williams over Prince.

This is how I've got them ranked too.

Williams can be a good CB. But he can be an all pro S. I wouldn't be against taking Williams at 11 and House at 43 and OLB Carter at 65.

Then sign ASO/Taylor in FA and this defense looks much better.

Some people will gripe about taking Williams at 11. Because he doesn't look like a value on Kiper/Mayock/McShay board. I would ask those people if they've ever seen Williams play and do you think he could be an all pro S. If the answer is yes then you take Williams at 11. His game translates to the NFL like E.Thomas game did.

If Williams lasts until the late 1st RD somebody is getting a steal. IMHO

We are on the same page here. People get to caught up on the Mayocks and Kipers of the worlds rankings and start overvaluing players because of it. Obviously the Texans dont think this way or they would of never drafted Brown where they did.

I actually think Smith could turn out to be the best on of all of them but would not waste a draft pick on him. Way to many red flags.

I think Williams winds up a Pro Bowl caliber FS. In terms of man to man and coverage skills, I don't think there's nearly as big of a gap between he, Prince and Peterson as their draft spots might indicate. What will work against him is his lack of speed, thus I think the transition to FS is needed for any team that needs him.

Williams on paper has been compared to Antrell Rolle by many experts. To me, he's more Michael Huff. Both are adequate defenders at CB in the right matchup (against the physical WR) but better suited at FS.

Houston's best plan of attack here is to trade down. I've felt that from the beginning.

Think about this.

Philadelphia apparently wants Prince, badly. The Eagles have two picks in the fourth and fifth round, thus could work around enough to get back a second perhaps, or a third.

What if Philly offers their first, second and third to move up to 11? Houston moves down to 23. At 23, Williams isn't as big of a reach as he would be say at 11..

If the draft plays out like this, I'd be pretty happy.

23: Aaron Williams
42. Phil Taylor or Stephen Paea
54. Jabaal Sheard
73. Curtis Brown or Johnny Patrick
85 Will Rackley

Prince has physical capabilities that Williams just doesn't.

That's why you're hearing talk of moving Williams to safety.

Williams looked better coached and certainly more confident in that piece.

I think Amukamara could end up being a fairly similar player to Malcolm Jenkins and end up moving to safety too. He struggles with quick receivers and that's why you saw him get torched by Blackmon.

Me too..Amukamara...something's off about him imo. Texas has a pretty good pedigree when it comes to db's so i think williams will turn out pretty good despite where people have him going in the draft.

My top 5 corners-

1. Peterson, complete package
2. Jimmy Smith, best press cover
3. Amukamara, most physical cover 2
4. Aaron Williams, top FS prospect
5. Brandon Harris, bit undersized but cleanest skill set

I'd take Peterson in the 1st and that's it . Throwing picks at a position and hoping it'll cure it doesn't work .

I'd try to fix the pass coverage by getting to the QB .

My way of thinking too. It looks as if Prince is going to be the CB that falls to us at that point and I'm not sold on him. I'd be happy trading down to take Aaron Williams if we could but I doubt that happens.
