So who should we draft in the first round next year, secondary or pass rusher?

An outstanding corner that can sit on the bench and learn for a year or less? A DT? Somebody on defense. That's all I know or care about.
 
I would say BPA on the D line or secondary. It would be nice though to draft a FS that could step in and start. If Barwin comes back healthy next season he adds depth as far as pass rusher goes. And it also seems Okoye might be starting to turn it around, so now that I think about it more I say secondary. Our first 3 picks at least better be defensive picks though.
 
There's not a position in the draft that I would be opposed to drafting (except RB).

I think it's essential that we sign a veteran CB or two and I would move Quin to safety, but in the draft I think we have the luxury of drafting the true BPA.

A safety of either variety (though preferably a FS). Perhaps we should nab Quinton Carter in the 1st or 2nd.

I wish this misguided notion that any corner can move to S would just go the F away?

It's a different mind set and a different skill set.
 
No, the defensive line appears as if it is the only area out of the three areas (d-line, LB, and secondary) who is somewhat competent. They do not have a massively impressive outing every game, but they are getting to the QBs and generally doing their jobs.

The LB crew might need help. Bentley made one nice play, ducking the block on an Eagles RB screen play, but the rest of the time he was brainfarting the night away. Outside of Cushing, our LB crew needs bolstering IMO.

In the secondary, it's painfully obvious that our safeties do not know when to break off of deep coverage and dip down to the area of the CB to help the CB out. We've been getting caught where the QB & WR hook up in that little spot between the CB and S. It's happened all year. It's cost us games, especially the Jets game.

We should go for a Free Safety, the best one we can get, and preferably the type of guy who doesn't need "coaching" since I don't think they get the right secondary coaching with the Texans--Gonna' need as much of a ready-made Free Safety as we can get our hands upon. But hey, I am not a coach...just a fan. I'm going off what I see out there, and the results are sloppy..as if the secondary guys just don't have a clue at all. They give effort, but the underlying positioning and technique, etc., etc. looks like they are out of position and always getting burned before the play begins.

Then again, the CBs played wayyy up on the Titans WRs. Why? I'll tell you why: Because Rusty Smith stinks and Frank Bush isn't making our CBs do that with other teams' WRs. I see an occasional jam-type pre-snap coverage by one, or sometimes both, CBs...but it's rare. So, therefore, is it two things: Bad secondary talent (dumb guys) and bad coaching on top of it?

Just really struggling with the overall lack of single-minded cohesiveness of our D-line/LB/Secondary crews. They look like three separate units out there, all floating around and operating under three different gameplans.

IMO there are a few things that have to happen in the offseason for us to be successful next year, regardless of the coach:

We need to sign an above average DT. I don't know who will be available (if anyone), but we don't have time to develop someone new. Amobi will be ok if there is a guy next to him that will allow him to shoot his gaps.

We need a free safety. I don't care who or how, but we need one desparately. If the coaching staff wants to stick with a true SS like Pollard that is fine. But don't bother asking him to cover anything more than a zone.


I think that if the right Will LB becomes available we need to consider him also. Brian lacks in pass coverage, and DeMeco is just ok at it, so having a guy who's strong suit is coverage would help us against Dallas Clark, Marcedes Lewis, and Bo Scaife.

We also need a corner for depth at a minimum if proper coaching can be given to our young guys. Without a good FS, though, the corners are irrelevant.


My biggest want in the draft (and y'all are gonna roast me) is WR. I'm not a college guy, but I think if a big playmaker falls to us in the draft (a la Crabtree or Bryant) we need to pick him up. This would take heat off of AJ and loosen the passing lanes for the TE routes we like to run.


To free up space, I personally let OD go. I like the guy, but as it is right now he is expendable. I think if we re-sign him it is indicative that the team is trying to keep up with marketing and PR rather than actually making sure the team is as sound as it can be.
 
If a WR is BPA, I would take him.

Go the Eagles/Colts route and just drop so many points on someone that your defense can come out and suck.

Marcel Darius at DT could be a monster player, he just has plenty of character issues to overcome.

I think a new defensive regime could go a long way with current talent augmented with aggressiveness in free agency.

Hopefully things turn around someday

CB hopefully. And to add to that, I really hope someone realizes Quin's potential at FS. It just seems like the right thing to do.

I actually agree with you on the WR part to a degree but totally disagree with your take on OD. I think getting him back healthy and producing like he was last season should be priority 1 for the offense, we aren't the same without him. As well as Dreesen and Casey have played they just aren't OD and our passing offense isn't the same.

As for the WR I think we need a speedy play-making slot guy. I thought Jacoby could develop into that guy but he is way too inconsistent. Would spending out 1 on a good WR upgrade our offense? Yeah, but the defense is in shambles and I just can't justify it at this point. 2nd rounder I could live with and I think thats a nice spot for the type of WR I just mentioned.
 
BPA provided he's not a RB. I think the Texans need to be considerably more active in free agency in the next year or two than they have been in the past. Our needs are many but I don't see this team as having the widespread lack of talent that the 2005 squad had. I think we need impact players with experience. We need guys who can hit the ground running. Adding snot-nosed rookies who need a year or two to get up to speed isn't going to help us. We've been feeding younglings into the machine for years but with no established players to set the example I'm not sure it's making any difference. We need to go out and sign ourselves a personality transplant.

But it won't happen. We'll keep right on being the Barney the Dinosaur of the NFL.
 
Just the first pick? They better use all their picks on defense. I don't want to see another tight end for the next two years.

I agree with this. Mark Anderson is providing some real opposite Mario pressure. Antonio Smith is getting pressure too. The DT is what we need.

I said that our WR corp took a step back this year and primarily KW has been inconsistent. If we want to be a consistent team we need consistent contributors. I'm not asking for 10+ catches a game but I am asking for you to catch what hits you in the hands.

Dreesen has shown that he is read and Casey is coming along. When you add Garrett Graham to the potential list, OD is expendable.
 
I say we give up our 1st rounder for once and either use it to get a quality veteran or more picks. this way we can't bust that first rounder anymore.

Depending on who said veteran might be, I could be in favor of this. I would gladly give up a 1st for Asomugha or another big name for the secondary.
 
If Kubiak and crew are still here, we better draft someone on offense, because any defensive pick will just be ruined by terrible coaching.

I would go this route, of course depending on where we draft, the players projected to go around our pick, etc. (Other teams panic button could translate into our success, see New England Patriots.) If we do trade any pick(s) it has to be on defense and hopefully the secondary. Players I would look into are Asomugha (almost always in the disscussion in trades) Jon Beason (carolina looks like their going into a re-building mode and a new coach might want to clean house) and Jared Allen (Really why would Allen want to stay with the vikings? New qb next year, talk about moving to LA, new head coach and system, already going through a bad season...). A few good veterans on defense and a new DC could turn this defense into a top 10.

If we don't trade and draft, then Patrick Patterson. Im surprised no one is talking about mallet or newton(is he eligible for the draft?) after everyone turned on schaub last night.

Coming into that draft, wasn't Quinn labeled as a corner/free safety tweener though that could play either position?
 
A new Defense, lol.

I would like to see them draft a pass rusher in the first, then go safety in the second, and CB in the third. After that, I would still work on the secondary, or BPA.

I don't know who will be available, but I would love to see them add a top notch (or at least above average) CB via free agency, and a d-lineman too. The chances of that happening are unlikely though.

Even if we lose the rest of our games we won't get a high draft pick compared to the teams that dwell in the Bowels of Suckdom such as the Panthers, Bills, Lions and Bengals.
 
From what I've seen, 4/3 DTs are deep in this draft. Not a whole lot of FS talent up in the first and second rounds. As far as CB, you can forget about Peterson, he'll be long gone, not so sure about Prince, he may be there. This whole lockout thing could completely screw up free agency, and that's what could help us the most player wise.

anyway we got plenty of hits on vick last night- more than any other team ive seen the eagles play.. it has to be lb or secondary

you know when we're on offence and schaubs first quick read is covered and he has to roll out and throw it away/get sacked? happens roughly 5-8 ish plays a game. i think our LB's/DB's have forced that to happen about 5-8 times ALL SEASON. also i wouldnt draft a cb again in rd 1 id go with a safety or WLB
 
We should target the best player available on the defensive side of the ball. With that being said I would love to have Brandon Harris in the first round and then load up on other playmakers such as Jerron Johnson as well as picking up a productive WR.

Also, we need to add more mass to the offensive line and try and get the biggest, baddest, fastest big ugly we can find.
