Texans General Manager Rick Smith built on the franchise's first winning record with another solid draft. Corner Kareem Jackson wasted no time demonstrating his cover skills and was elevated to starting right corner position during May OTA's. Ben Tate is a talented runningback who, like Jackson, filled a major need. Third round pick Earl Mitchell may be the sleeper of Houston's draft.
 
this is a paid service so full disclosure is subject to censorship so I kept it brief. it should be noted that last year they gave the Texans ABOVE AVERAGE grade. That class included DROY Brian Cushing, starting CB Glover Quinn (out of the 4th rd.) & some quality minutes from Connor Barwin, Antonine Caldwell & Brice McCain. Hill flashed breifly, as did Casey but injurys took their toll on them as well Troy Nolan who was lost for season early.

Grade: Good is above average which means even bigger things are in store for the Texans. After the three they mentioned (Jackson, Tate & Mitchell) I have a really good feeling about Sharpton, its going to be hard to keep him off the field.

The fun/maddening thing about doing mocks is the next day when you look at who your team picked. If you look at their choices(and even if you did not make those same choices) and they are good ones, you are thrilled. If you replicate the C&C music factory era of picking you rest your head in your hands and sigh.

I like the choices they made then and I like them better now.

I am still high on Troy Nolan and think he could make an impact if healthy and given a chance.

can only speak for myself but this is why the NFL draft has become a favorite pastime of mine (knew even I could do a better job than Casserly). then he's hired by NFL network, the GM authority, breaking down prospects as only charlie can :clown:

Ugh. I have a friend who has NFLN and he's says he enjoys Charlie's breakdowns.

It blows my mind.

I enjoy it but it is also depressing. I mean Asserly was supposed to be a GM. So from the time the Texans finished the season to the draft, he would theoretically spend all his time reviewing tape, and evaluating college prospects. If he worked regular hours he spent 40 hours a week doing just that. If he was working more, he'd spend more time evaluating.

I can't speak for you, but between the time the Texans season ends to the draft, I certainly don't spend anywhere close to 40 hours per week reviewing film. In a fraction of the time he has, I(you and most of the reputable mockers on this board) have put together much better picks than him. You have to wonder why that is the case.

Maybe because we only watch tape, and dont have access to things like interviews or wonderlic scores? I dont know about the rest of you, but I pretty much go strictly by what I see on the field. Thats all I can do.

By only getting to see game action (and more recently, the combine), we see how they play, and cant get sucked in by non-football things. Sure we miss out on some players, and over-value the occasional college star. But we also avoid the workout warrior busts, the guys that have been coached to ace an interview, etc.

I think that maybe it was because Asserly insisted on drafting who he thought was the best fit, and not allowing the coach to have enough input.

Plus, Asserly did not have Gibbs to hold his hand like he did in the '70's ( or was it 80's)

I think Casserly is still working for NFL for same reason McNair hired him. He was successful at Washington as a GM and has milked that old cow for a few paychecks. He probably still has contacts in the league. Reminds me a bit of John McClain.

Casserly has proven you dont have to be good at your job. You just have to kiss the right butt and have the right contacts to get a job in the NFL.

It explains how an incompetent like CC has kept a job in the NFL for 30 years. CC is/was nothing without Gibbs.

It wasn't Gibbs that helped Casserly but Bobby Beathard. Once Beathard left the Redskins, the quality of the teams drafts and FA signing dropped off.\

Does this sound familiar?
