NCAA hands USC two-year bowl game ban, major scholarship reduction in football

Oh I agree that the NCAA has been notoriously limp dicked in terms of trying to find and investigate violations of their own code of any kind. However, USC getting punished, even if it's way way later than what I would've liked, I still consider a victory in terms of trying to bring to light how shameful these academic institutions are when it comes to athletics.

I agree with everything you're saying and I'm glad that they finally got at least some sort of punishment. It was getting more and more pathetic by the day that USC got to keep going with business as usual when that Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo issues were as large as they were and constantly reported all over the media. Hell, a ton of stuff I read about the Reggie Bush case had all sorts of wild stuff going on with thugs showing up to depositions and trying to scare away the investigators and all sorts of random stuff.

Here is another thing to consider though. The media plays a big role in this kind of thing as well. If the media doesn't report all of these investigations and infractions, we really don't hear about a lot of this stuff. The media stayed all over these stories with USC. What if the media hadn't been all over this from day one and continued on about it for the last 3 years? What are the odds that USC might not have ever gotten punished? I'd say that those odds are probably pretty damn high. My guess is that certain NCAA officials probably would have been payed off by USC boosters or execs and this would have gone away fairly quietly. The media stomped all over this thing though and wouldn't let it go away, so eventually something had to happen and Pete Carroll obviously felt like the time was near.

Basically the only reason the NCCA cares about money changing hands is because of gambling and point-shaving.

I'd like to point out that colleges also payoff college coaches to steer their players there. I've seen that first hand.

I think the media blitz is definitely relative with how big of a school USC is. You don't see the media hound a story for years about San Diego State. This really just points to the media being actually useful in terms of making sure the big Goliath program goes down.

At this point though the big schools know that the media is going to chase them down if they catch wind of egregious stuff going on. I'm not really impressed with the NCAA and it's history for many reasons, and the fact that reporters have to basically beat these guys over the head to get them to do anything is pretty appalling. At least somebody was keeping an eye out.

Now if only they'd repeatedly beat them over the head about a playoff in football. . . yeah that won't happen in my lifetime

Yes, in this instance it's been a very good thing.

The media has to get word of it though. And I just wonder how many possible times where a media reporter possibly did get word of something like this and may have been paid off to keep quiet about a story. That may not have ever happened, but I could see it happening in certain instances. It's very possible.

Well they have at certain times. I think we will see a playoff in our lifetime, but who the hell knows when. I do think we'll get one though, but I think they'll probably do some really silly one to start off with like a "plus one" game after the Rose Bowl or something like that to where it's only like a 4 team playoff. That's just my guess any way. I do think they'll eventually do something though at some point, but it might end up taking another 10 years.

The media can be pretty weasely when it comes to getting it's name out there as breaking a big big story like huge violations against a major university. That's the one good thing, they'll carry a story for as long as they think it'll put them in headlines on ESPN.

I think the formation of these Superconfrences might help to get a playoff going, but I just don't know if the BCS will ever see it as being more profitable than the current system.

Yeah, I do think this will be a bigger step towards getting a playoff. Is it a giant step or a baby one, well only time will tell there. But this is going to change the scope of college football pretty drastically from the way it seems at this point, so why not throw in a playoff tournament while we're at it? At least with them making these new super conferences if they follow through with all of this we should see some more competitive schedules for all of the top teams around the board from now on which should make college football a lot more exciting. A playoff would just be the icing on the cake to a much more competitive season. If all of this does go through to where we have like 3 or 4 super conferences it will be hard to imagine any teams going undefeated from this point on.

EDIT:

I think this conversation should move to the re-alignment thread because I believe that everybody agrees that while USC deserved punishment there probably are more programs that aren't being punished, but such is the state of affairs in the NCAA. It's not right, it's how it is and there's not much looking like it'll change in the near future.
