JaMarcus Russell = future Texan?

I think it would be awesome to have Russel in the Texans training camp, so long as he gets the minimum and has to make the 53 man roster to get his salary. I have a hard time believing he is much worse than Orlovsky and Booty. Let Kubiak turn him into a decent backup and if Schaub gets hurt they can trot him out there for kicks.

Rookies should have to "earn" their salaries by proving it on the field before being awarded with these ridiculous contract amounts.

I agree with that, but I'm also leaning toward Eric Winston's point, which is why should the players save the owners from themselves? The owners are the ones handing out ridiculous deals.

As for Russell, one thing comforts me, and that's the fact that he's stupid enough to blow all the money he's been paid, so he'll be broke soon.

You are kidding - right?

Believe it. He is. He has just over 4000 yards in 2-1/4 seasons, 52% completion %, 18 TDs, 38 turnovers, and 70 sacks. And for having the strongest arm in recent memory, he has a 6 yard average on his passes.

Those are Ryan Leaf numbers, except Leaf got slightly better as he progressed (slightly), while Russell got worse as he went along.

Should be an interesting camp battle for the QB spot.

Campbell, Boller, Frye, and Gradkowski.

Leg up IMO goes to Campbell.

Next stop: sitting by a pool watching girls walk by as he eats chicken wings, taters and gravy and milk shakes. He has millions and does not need to subject himself to sacks or mean old fans like you guys. He has feelings too, even if he is too fat to feel them.

The guy has TONS of potential but a terrible attitude and work ethic... can't see Kubiak bringing him here. I trust Orlavsky much more to manage the game than Russell.

I think its fair enough to now change that to had, I don't see him ever recovering from this. I feel sorry for fans of whatever NFL team that is stupid enough to even think about picking him up.

He doesn't have to work. He didn't even like to work when he had to for the team. My guess is he won't work. He's set for life.

Picture of Russell leaving Oakland :heh:.

No way would we have a QB outweighing most of our offensive line. Wait... I wonder about him playing center. It's only a couple of steps in front of the QB position and he should already know where to place the ball on the snap.

Another player who may kiss my butt.

??????? Kiss your butt? This isn't Pacman, Rosthlisberger, or some other hoodlum. I can understand if he was a troublemaker always in trouble with the law, but sounds he just need some good "old school, kick in the pants" guidance with a team who's not going to coddle him.

If a team does pick him up, they better treat him a lot worse than the Raiders org did. Because of Al's stubbornness we ended up babying him and made him even more lazy. I still believe he will never be a starter in the NFL, but if put in the right situation might be a semi-decent backup.

I'm against this on 2 fronts.
1. Russell showed in college that he was baffled by DB's. DC could read a D better than this guy.
2. What QB has Kubes ever coached to greatness? Elway? Yeah. He needed coaching up. Griese? Jake "the fake" Plummer? Cutler? Young? See Elway. QB's who have done gr8 under Kubiak were gr8 QB's PERIOD. They didn't need coaching up. The guys that did need coaching up never amounted to much. The same can be said for almost all of the "QB Guru's". Great is great by nature far more than nurture in the sports world.
Elway understood coverages better than most DB coaches.
AROD understands pitchers and ball rotation better than any hitting coach.
Tiger Woods knows his golf swing better than Haney knows himself.
The gr8 ones need tweaks far more than coaching.
How much coaching up do you think the OC of Indy does with his QB? I'd say he asks more questions than anything else.

PS: Since this IS a gag thread, how about seeing how Russell could do on the DL for us...

Cutler never played under Kubiak. All those other QBs had their best years under Kubiak's tutelage. Griese (yes, even Griese) made a Pro Bowl under Kubiak. Steve Young and John Elway were great QBs, no doubt, but they had their best seasons under Kubiak's tutelage. Jake Plummer even had a great year or two under Kubiak.

Furthermore, the Texans had the #1 passing offense in the NFL last year. The guy has his warts, and if we don't get to the playoffs next season I'll be wearing the pink soap avatar, but the man knows QBs and offense. Give credit where it's due.

He even held out for it. That's jawbreaker balls anyway you look at it.

yeah that's pretty much the smartest thing he's ever done. he knew he wouldn't last in the league, so he wanted every penny he could get.

when you consider all the Pro Bowlers and potential Hall of Famers that went after him, you gotta start looking at Russell as the biggest bust ever.

By cutting him after OTA's started, did they hand him a ton of money for a few days work?

No.

They took a little bit of a chance by letting him participate in OTA's only from the standpoint that if he'd been injured severely enough (can you say Limas Swede), they'd owe him his full contract amount of $9 Million. Beyond that, I don't believe his participation had any potential to cost them money.

Ouch. That was just mean.

Agreed.

Champion basically hit it. The big risk is injury and how often does that happen to QB's? During OTA's and training camp their contract salary doesn't apply. Everybody participating gets some weekly stipend. Don't remember the exact amount but like $5k a week or something.

Russell is immensely worse than David Carr. it's not even close. at least Carr tried and showed some effort. oh, and his completion percentage was always good, even if it was just a bunch of dump-offs. Russell's final year with the Raiders: 48%. that's incredible.

I disagree. David Carr was much worse, because he was just good enough to string it out for five years. As bad as Russell was, it was an easy decision to cut him, and the fans are rid of him relatively quickly.

:D

I would bet you money he IS worse than Dan O and Booty. Colossal waste of space(and lots of it) and I bet the Raider fans feel the way Lions fans feel about passing a bad mofo for an awful player. (Rodgers over AJ), (Russel over CJ, ADAP.)

The things we focus on are attitude and football smarts. Last check, he has neither.

Given our backup QB situation I'd take a flier on Russell and let Kubiak coach em up. Its a low risk deal and if he screws around cut him on the spot.
