Lets say the Vikings and Texans make a trade...

Vikings get: Toby Gerhart RB

Texans receive: Ben Tate RB, Daryl Sharpton LB, and Sherrick McMannis CB

Who do you believe got the better end of the trade considering the team's needs and how the players fit their team's system?

For the sake of argument, you have to pick one side even though we all know that nobody knows until these people play in the NFL. Which side do you project will get the better end of this deal?

For arguments sake, I think you'd have to take the Texans no matter what you think of Gerhart.

Didn't the Texans move up though to get Tate? I don't remember what they gave up.
 
While I think Toby will be a better back, the depth that we get with the trade gives the Texans a slight edge. Very close though.

And if I can admit it, then everyone should be able to.

Gave up their 5th. But traded the 3rd they received for a 4th and 5th. In the NFL Draft where teams who pick # 1 overall find a way to mess things up and a future HOF QB in Tom Brady lasts to pick # 199, the more picks the better.

You should exclude McMannis from the trade for it to be more accurate.

That is my point. We swapped fifths, so had we not made the move up to get Tate we would have drafted another guy. To be fully accurate then toss in the 5 we sent to NE. So the trade would look like:

Ben Tate, Darryl Sharpton (KC 4th), Sherrick McMannis(KC 5th) vs. Gerhart + Zoltan Mesko(Our original 5th).

But since we would have likely taken McMannis with our own 5th I just thought leaving him out would make more sense.

You thought wrong partner. We can go by draft value charts if you'd like. We got 2 extra players in this trade so there!!!
 
Far as value goes : IMO it's a push.

Truthfully though in the end it's going to be hard to tell. I think Toby will fit well in Minnesota. He's got an OL that can open up holes, he doesn't have to worry about being "the guy" there, and he probably won't be asked to be a target out of the backfield initially. Good move for Minnesota because even if Brett doesn't come back whomever they call on to start is going to have a grinding running game to fall back on.

Texans made out well because I think Tate has a better all around game and a skill set that will be used fully. I think he's more prepared to be "the guy" in our attack if Slaton doesn't come back fully healthy. Texans could've come out better but IMO didn't use the extra picks very well.

No we didn't. We gained a 2 and a 3 from Minny while losing our 2(+1). We then lost a 5 by trading up to get Tate(0). We then lost our 3 and gained a 4 and a 5 from KC(back to +1). Any way that you cut it that equals 1 extra player.

We've been on the opposite side of these two (Tate & Gerhart) since evaluations of these players began .... I think Tate will be the better of the two in the NFL. Tate has been my target back since day one.

They are pretty equal in many area's but I think Tate is better suited to the Texans running game and he has better speed giving him the ability to break some long runs.

The way Gerhart carries the ball just scares the crap out of me. Both of their backs will likely put the ball on the turf too often .
The Vikes got a guy who I think would be better suited to the Jets or Steelers running games .... He wont break many long ones but he will grind out some tough yards.

When you factor in who got the better of this deal you have to consider that the Vikes are minus a player in the 4th as well as those the Texans picked up.

I think they will both be good pro's but that Tate is the better fit here.

I don't know about NFL, but will say always I believed in this system, Tate was the better choice for "one cut and go". May well be that Gerhart has the better rookie season. Maybe Lagarette and Dwyer also. But as a "fit" Tate was the running back. He was to the Texans running attack the "cleanest" player on the board outside of Mathews..... believe it or not.

Yeah well they are certainly deeper now at every position than when they began the draft. Special teams are stronger. Only time will tell if one Earl Thomas or one Iupati trumps all the depth they just received via the draft. The bottom line is winning the division. That means a spit with one and sweeping the other two. If they accomplish that with this group the draft will be a success. Nothing short of that matters for 2010.
 
Whether one of us likes Gerhart better or Tate better.... best I can tell by the FO's comments is that they were torn between the two. Essentially, some liked TG and some like BT better.... they had them ranked about even.

So, in essence, we got one of the RB's plus a 3rd rounder minus a 5th. That's success, when it's RBa vs. RBb.

I like Tate more than Gerhart, so obviously I picked the Texans. And I think you add in the 2 players to this equasion because we turned the Vikings 3rd into 2 players.

Now if you want to say we traded a 5th in order to get Tate, then you must do the same for the Vikings side.

Texans: Ben Tate + Darryl Sharpton

Vikings: Toby Gerhart - 3rd round pick.

Now it should be clear.
 
1) Trade 2nd round pick to Vikings for 2nd rd + 3rd rd
2) Trade for Patriots' 2nd round pick giving up 2nd rd + 5th rd
3) Trade 3rd round pick for Chiefs' 4th rd + 5th rd

Net result of the draft day trades:
Moving down 7 spots in the 2nd round
picking up an early 4th round pick
moving up 6 spots in the 5th round

The way I look at it is like this: We moved down in the 2nd to select Ben Tate and received Darryl Sharpton as compensation and were able to "trade up" in the 5th to get "our CB" without having to give any compensation up. We entered the draft with 8 picks and left with 9 picks.

Gerhart holds the ball at his waist. I'm pretty stoked about Tate, truth be told.

So Ben and Toby cross each other out and we are only left with one extra player which is Darryl, right!
 
I'll mention the other trade. In this draft, I would not have traded a 3rd for a 4th and a 5th.
