NFL Draft 2010: Day 2

Typical.

I knew there was a reason why I don't come around here much anymore.

An aversion to other people speaking their mind tends to do that. You might suffer from one. I get it though, I'm not thrilled with the draft so I'm "freaking out" and being a "knee jerk".

An extra 5th does mean we can take a flyer on a guy. Could even be another runner like McKnight, Dwyer, Blount, or Stefan Johnson

Power backs aren't worth jack in the modern NFL, which is why I wanted no part of Toby

Tate has size and good speed. Not sure about his hands, but that's what Slaton's for

Tate has very good hands. At least as good as Slaton IMO. And he is a better pass blocker.

hope youe have some everclear mixed in! :fans:

I haven't needed the everclear sense Kubes got here. I have to admit that I played a drinking game where I had a bud light everytime Tebow's name was mentiond tonight. I'm glad I'm still able to type

OK, one of these guys will be there tomorrow with that first 4th rounder.

Dominique Franks
Perrish Cox
Arthur Jones
Geno Atkins
Jonathon Dwyer
AOA
Matt Tennant
Kam Chancellor
Donovan Warren
Mitch Petrus.

Everyone there is still talent there to be had.

I'd like Petrus & AOA

Lawd... you must have drank two kegs worth
lol

I just got to Dallas for s bras bday. Did the texans take a TE with a second 3rd rounder?

We traded that pick to KC but they took a TE - no really, Tony Moeaki, Iowa [Twilight Zone theme plays in the background]

...does that count??
:D

Add 2009 "Future 1st round picks" that time forgot, like Selvie and Greg Hardy

I remember when Geno Atkins and DeMarcus Granger were "sure fire" top 20 picks

We all have our opinions but we all mock this stuff out and read the analysis and some of us look at tape and highlights and whatever. But. Ultimately, that's all just mental masturbation. It's fun but kinda pointless.

The "real" boards do not synch up with ours. Just because I hadn't heard about Earl Mitchell... so what? I hadn't heard about Corey Peters and the Falcons took him a couple of picks after we took Mitchell. The professionals have different boards than we do.

In our mock we had Everson Griffen going 16th and Bruce Campbell has been a 1st round pick in just about every mock I've looked at. For these guys dropping past the 3rd doesn't mean that the professionals are stupid. It means that the amateurs are amateurs.

I had Tate above Gerhart. I expected Tate to go in the 2nd round and Gerhart to go in the 3rd. I would have been fine with Gerhart but if we had picked him, I would have felt that we reached for him. (And obviously, it wouldn't have been, but I would have felt like it was.)

So, to get ticked off at our FO because their picks are different than ours, like they've got entirely different grades on the players than WalterFootball or NFL Draft Scout, isn't something to get ticked off about. It's something that you should expect.

Well halleluyah. Good post. Might be hope for this place yet.

I say might.

From NFL Fanhouse about gerhard's hands:

Gerhart, who played outfielder on Stanford's 2008 College World Series team, had to convince NFL teams he would not pursue a career in Major League Baseball.

Even his race was questioned -- Gerhart is a rare breed, a white running back -- and he conceded he had been questioned by numerous NFL teams about how he felt about that.

"Teams have asked me about everything like that," Gerhart said in an interview with FanHouse. "They've said, 'We know you're a big, strong guy, but we have a question about your hands.' I'd tell them I think I have good hands. I just wasn't asked to catch the ball a whole lot in our system this past year. They would ask about my outside running.

This guy might end up stinking but I saw him take over games. he was an oufielder so he could probably learn to catch a pigskin.

From NFL.com:

Round 2, Pick 26 (58) (From Cardinals through Patriots) Ben Tate RB 5'11" 220 Auburn 6.9 --
Pick Analysis: The Texans add a hard-nosed runner with exceptional skills. Tate is ideally suited to play in Gary Kubiak's zone-based running game. As a "one-cut" back with good speed and power, he excels at running between the tackles and is an aggressive finisher. With Steve Slaton unable to carry the load, Tate could be a vital contributor in the Texans' running game this season.

He's faster than Toby. Hopefully, he works out better.

The last guy (the 215 pounder) i know, know, typo (also from nfl.com:

Round 3, Pick 17 (81) Earl Mitchell DT 6'3" 215 Arizona 5.9 --
Pick Analysis: The Texans pick up an unheralded interior defender in Earl Mitchell. The Arizona standout is a high-motor player with a quick first step. Though he lacks ideal size for the position, his athleticism and toughness give him a chance to make an impact as a rotational player for the Texans.

another amobi long-term project?

The thing about Tate, from everything I've read, he has some issues with fumbling. You can really get in Kubiak's doghouse not holding onto the ball, so I'm a little surprised with the pick.

From the Texans Draft Day thread on Clutch BBS, here's rezdawg's post:

http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=185561&page=38&pp=20

If Slaton can come back healthy, we'll have a nice combo of runningbacks.

You guys ready for my statistic of the day??

Ben Tate had 678 carries in his 4 years at Auburn.

He fumbled the ball ZERO times.

I trust the FO, Had I been the GM, I would have given up out 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 6th to trade with detroit for ndomikon sue (?) yesterday

Now that I think about it, the Texans did exactly what I wanted them to do today. They took a DB in the 1st, RB in the 2nd, and a D-lineman in the 3rd.

No Herv, you DON'T get it. You're "freaking out" and being a "knee-jerk" because they didn't do what YOU wanted them to do, because for some reason you happen to think you know more than they do.

It's not the opinion. It's the attitude. And your attitude is ******ed up.

from cbssports.com

04/13/2010 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT RUNNING BACKS: Ben Tate, Auburn, 5-11, 220, 2-3: Tate is a physical runner who many thought flashed surprising bursts of speed during his college career. The real surprise was that he does have excellent speed, as he showed at the combine when he shocked scouts with a 40 time of 4.34 seconds despite his 220-pound frame. He has been compared to Marion Barber III of the Dallas Cowboys in terms of being a tough, inside runner. Some scouts think Tate might have the combination of toughness and speed that will make him productive in the NFL, which shouldn't be that surprising when his college career is put into perspective. Although many think Tate was inconsistent at Auburn, his career total of 3,321 yards rushing was fifth in school history, behind the likes of Bo Jackson, Carnell Williams, James Brooks and Joe Cribbs. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY

Gonna be an interesting training camp battle at RB this year.
Slaton, Tate, Johnson, Foster, Moats, Chris Henry...
yep, looking fwd to T/C

So I just did a quick analysis/recap of our draft day trades and the ending result. Here's what it boils down to.

Texans move down 7 spots in the 2nd round to select RB Ben Tate and received the 4th pick in the 4th round (#102) and moved up 6 spots in the 5th round.

Now for you Trade Value Chart junkies out there (like myself) let's look at the math. #51 = 390 pts, #58 = 320 pts... a difference/loss of 70 pts we 'should' make up with the other picks. #102 = 100 pts... that puts us at a 30 point advantage. Plus moving up from #150 (31.4 pts) to #144 (34 pts) gives us an extra 2.6 pts for a grand total point advantage of 32.6 pts which is equivalent to the 19th pick in the 5th round.

That's what I call a success! Now we just gotta fill them with some really good players.

how could a guy have zero fumbles in 4 years? if he did, he wouldn't be trying hard enough

If they are tracking stats on ESPN, ALL running backs have zero fumbles because they don't track that stat even though they list it.

Auburn had a 35-21 lead with 7:32 to play in regulation and appeared to be cruising to a win. But the Tigers turned the ball over twice in a span of two minutes. Ben Tate lost a fumble at the Northwestern 31, and Demond Washington lost a fumble at midfield after a long kickoff return. The Wildcats were able to score a pair of touchdowns in the final three and a half minutes of regulation to force overtime.
http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/tag/_/name/ben-tate

Analysis
Inside: At his best as a downhill runner. Thick build with good musculature throughout. Attacks the line of scrimmage and takes what the defense gives him. Lowers his shoulder and will take on the defender in the hole. Good toughness to run through arm tackles and get to and through the second level and into the open field. Keeps his eyes up and has enough lateral agility and acceleration to take advantage of cut-back lanes. Good balance, but is not special in this area. Protects the ball with both hands in traffic, but has had some issues with fumbles over his career. Good short-yardage who runs with competitive fire and seems to have a legitimate nose for the end zone.

And you're mad at people for not thinking how YOU want them to think? Maybe calm down and talk some football.

I'm very happy with what we did today. People think that trading our third round pick for the 4th and 5th was a bad idea, but in reality it was a bottom 3rd round and a top of the 4th round, so it really wasn't that far back. We got a CB, RB and a DT so far, I would like to see us get another DB and an OL before we are done.

YES! I love these kind of posts where people use stats, numbers, and math to backup their posts. Excellent work!

how could a guy have zero fumbles in 4 years? if he did, he wouldn't be trying hard enough

No , he wasnt tryin hard enough to hang onto the ball ..... But lets compare him to one of the most physical backs in the league in Marion Barber ....

Tate was my choice of backs .... Im thrilled they were able to get him and add a pick later.

Tate is a 220lb back who runs a 4.43 40. The fact that he averages better than 5 yards per carry in the SEC and didnt put the ball on the ground in 731 touches should make Texans fans feel pretty good.

OMT's been around here longer than .... well since yesterday
