As bad days go, it was a pretty good one for the Texans. Never mind that it didn't play out the way they hoped.

Only thing is, they'd hoped to fill another need. As much as they needed a cornerback, they needed a running back more.

Three picks later, though, they were forced into a scramble mode when the Chargers moved up and took Fresno State's Ryan Mathews.

He apparently was the guy the Texans wanted,...

More substandard "journalism" from the folk at the Chronic.

Jackson wasn't the sexy media pick, but every time I look for more info about the guy, the news and reports are good.

FWIW, the ESPN Austin radio morning guys (including Dan Neal - 2x Super Bowl Champ O-Lineman from Denver) really liked the pick a lot.
 
And I must mention...the guy's basically hedging his bets...

starts with "they got better"

continues with "they didn't fill the biggest need"

Get medicated, man.

As much as I hate Justice...and I really do...I do think Matthews was their guy. Besides that I think Dickie needs to just move somewhere.

I interpreted Bush's comment the same way specifically with regard to Mathews v. Jackson but I think that over simplifies things. Bet Eric Berry was their guy over Mathews if that somehow happened. How did they have Spiller v. Mathews? This whole thing is a back and forth exercise of what ifs. I'll bet Green Bay didn't think they had any chance at Baluga.

Oh and talk about holy didn't trade back and reached - the Jags.
 
Obviously I'm not in the war room either, but I wouldn't be suprised if the Texans went CB even if Mathews was available. They have shown in the past that they don't like spending high picks on backs. I doubt that they are viewing this a bad first round.

Agree that they obviously have some of the guys like Berry higher but I believe, from that comment, that they targeted RB. That is the way it came out....once the Charger trade happened, things changed. If that is the case then you see who could be there. I think Spiller was realistically off most boards by then so that leaves you with Matthews as the target orginally. That is just how I took it. Once that happened they shifted gears to D.

I doubt they view it as a bad round either. It's hard to say who we would have picked though. All we can say is who we were targeting.

I feel pretty confident in saying that we were targeting Eric Berry, Joe Haden, Earl Thomas, Ryan Mathews, Kareem Jackson, Kyle Wilson, and Devin McCourty. Not necessarily in that order.

We knew Berry and Haden would be gone and then SD traded up for Mathews and Seattle took Thomas. I think we had to take Jackson where we did. I don't know why people are so upset that we didn't trade back.

We ended up using our 1st pick on a starting CB. Great job IMO.

Just curious, why is Justice getting blasted if Bush said that? I am not pro or con Justice or McClain & read their articles just because I want to read about Texans. Like all sources including those on this MB, they are just a source.

I think the blasting is more about how in one breath he tells us we're better for making the pick and then switching gears to how we didn't fill our biggest need...seems sorta schizo.

The article overall was positive, but it still didn't taste quite right.

And I'll read anything on the Texans out there no matter who writes it.
 
Justice has proved time and again that he is a hack. The article was slightly better than his normal crap but it is crap nonetheless.

I read the article that it was a bad day because we did not get Ryan who Bush indicated we were waiting for, but did fill the need for corner. Anyway, moving on to better things.
 
CB was a bigger need than RB was right now anyway when you look at the current crop of DB's the Texans have. They had no choice but to go with a Corner. I would have been fine with either him or Kyle Wilson.
 
As a copywriter (currently posting on this board at work:user:), I just laugh when I think about the Chron laying off most of its copy editors and copywriters while keeping Dick Justice.

There is a reason each edition is full of misprints and typos these days
 
I'm not going to lie, i would've been pissed if they took matthews while ignoring the gaping hole in our secondary. So i was estatic that Matthews wasn't an option by the time we picked.

Jackson wasn't on my radar for them to pick in the 1st, but neither was Mario Williams, Duane Brown or Brian Cushing & those picks turned out :ok:. The draft is one area of this regime where i'm not too worried about whether or not they're competent; They've for the most done a great job there.

From everything i read about this guy, I think he'll be a great fit here.

From what I'm understanding and seeing where our defense seems to be heading, it's heading into bad-ass physical territory. I hope I'm right and Jackson lives up to what he says. If the Texans develop a feared defense, it sets the tone of the games before they even start. And having that type of defense is way to master the AFC south. I think we getting close to that now. Quite possiblly the only thing left to get is an aggressive DT and another good DB.

You and me both - The fact that SD gave up picks to get him made it even better. I just dont see a feature back in this draft and taking one @ 20 when there are bigger holes to fill just didnt make sense to me.
 
Haynesworth is the LAST piece to our defensive puzzle. If he is truely available for a 2nd or 3rd, we would be stupid for not pulling the trigger.:gun:

So, I like me some Smithiak, but that makes 3 drafts that we got punked out of our RB. our guy. Hate to add fuel to the fire, but this would be evidence our think-tank don't know how to work the draft. Maybe leaking something to McClain... I don't know.

Either we have been lucky, or Kubiak is a genius putting together a garage sale offense, and making it work.

Jax & Tennessee tried the terrible defense route, but they didn't have the offense to go with it. We'll Tennessee did win the division once, but other than that it's been hell.

Sooner or later, we're going to have to spend money on the O..

unless of course Kubiak is a genius.
 
Can't complain about missing out on a back when SD trades up in front of you and Seattle to pick a back. It was well known that the Texans were looking for a complete back and so was Seattle. SD wanted Mathews and they paid for it.

Everyone would be complaining if we traded up and lost picks for Mathews. I am happy with the draft so far.

I don't see how them not taking a back in the 1st is them getting "punked". Maybe they didn't see value in giving up extra picks to move up and get an RB when they had gaping holes or didn't think the RB's were worth trading up for.

I mean to me it's obvious that the defense is lightyears behind the offense in terms of production and they add talent to the defense with their top picks 4 out of 5 drafts. I imagine it that they aren't trying to blow their load on one guy in any particular draft, and will instead quietly fill what they perceive to be holes in the team.

And yeah, you can mark me down for Kubiak being an offensive genius. Just look at how much of a jump in offense we get when Kubiak puts his garage sale players in from 2007 on.

EDIT: Justice sucks. I can write a blog post that says "Well they did good but I don't like it".
 
If we don't have a RB by round four I will be cussing like last year and the man upstairs was not too happy about that. So help me out, Smitty!

I started this thread, because of Justice's description of the fervor the Texans were in when San Diego swooped in & took our guy. How would he know, unless he was there.

Frank Bush's comments seem to mirror Justice's, supports the idea, that Justice was there.

If Justice was in the War Room with Smithiak, perhaps many here are wrong about his relationship with the F.O.
