Trade up to 9?

Surely someone other than myself heard the talk on 790 this morning that the Texans were rumored to be trading our 2nd round pick and #20 to Buffalo for #9 and we would take CJ Spiller?

I'm cool with that.

1. Spiller
3. Wright
4. McFadden

I can see it working

UGGH! I really don't want that to happen. If we traded up, I'd want to do it for:

Eric Berry, Haden, or possibly Earl Thomas. Giving up that much for a RB who offers the same skill set as Steve Slaton doesn't make much sense to me... particularly when the 2nd and 3rd rounds are littered with bigger, complimentary. Plus, that makes this Friday much less entertaining!

I also think that there is a decent chance that Spiller could fall to us at 20 anyway. I really can't imagine Smithiak pulling this trade.

Don't see it happening.

If I thought the Texans were just one positional player away from being dominant sure. I don't think we are.

I really don't think I would like it either, and it certainly doesn't fall in line with the Texans' way of thinking. If we were to trade up I would like to see one of the top corners or safeties taken. Also, I hate to give up that 2nd round pick. I have been all over the 790 website and their Facebook page, and I haven't found out anything, but I certainly heard it and it sounded more than speculation. Surely to goodness I'm not the only one on here that heard it. It was around 8:45 this morning.

Could John McClain have possibly been speaking? Disguising his voice even. Sounds like a standard McClain whopper.

I don't see Spiller being drafted by the Texans, since all that does is give us a fresher better model of Slaton. Of course we don't know if Slaton comes back healthy or not, but Spiller is another small quick guy, not a pound up the middle of the line guy. We need a heavy pounder before we need another small quick guy.

Considering that Slaton was really nice before the neck thing/fumbleitis set in, why wouldn't we want a fresher, better model?

I am hoping the Smithiak goes defense 1st round, and for running back pick up Gerhart in the 4rd or maybe even reach for him in the 3rd. I want a powerback that can get those couple of yards when it counts!

unless there's some crazy bona-fide player sitting there, trading up 11 spots into the top 10 seems nuts. not even sure the last time that's happened

I think we are closer than alot of people on this board think. I've seen alot of people talk about all of our gapping holes, and I don't see them. RB, CB, DT, G/C. Those are the do or die needs, and only RB and CB are huge holes.

Does not add up well for the Bills according to the value chart

#9- 1350
#20-850 + #51- 390 = 1240

-110 too much for Bills to give up.

The Bills have many holes to fill and may think of the extra pick as a way to plug one of them...they could take a hit if they had some players targeted and could save some real value...in the checkbook.

I agree...RB is a need. DB is a need (Earl Thomas would be nice as he could go either FS or CB...but he'll be gone). The defense started playing pretty well as a unit as the season progressed.

I think the O-line should be addressed in every draft no matter what though and am thinking if Iupati doesn't go by the time we pick, he'd be worth it.

Pure speculation. Nothing to it. Just tuned in to 790. Their "report" or rather pure speculation and BS came from a mock draft site and Great Blue North Draft Report who did trade projections with no insight based on nothing!

From the site: (Ed note: Trades are a fact of life on draft day in the NFL. Indeed its not if they will occur, but how early and how often. Needless to say, though, one of the big problems with mock drafts is that it is almost impossible to figure in trades so few try. This one does and inludes a number of projected trades that seem to make sense on both sides. One cautionary note though; none of these trades are predicated on any rumors or such that we have heard to date. In fact, to date there have been almost no solid leads on potential traes or even teams talking trade. Stay tuned though!)

Other projected trades:

Projected trades: 1) Houston acquires the 9th pick from Buffalo for the 20th and 51st picks
2) New England acquires the 10th pick from Jacksonville for the 22nd and 44th picks.
3) Philadelphia acquires the 12th and 43rd picks from Miami for the 24th, 37th and 55th picks.
4) Cincinnati acquires the 15th pick from the NY Giants for the 84th pick and a 5th round pick in 2011.
5) Cleveland acquires the 26th pick from Arizona for the 38th and 85th picks.

Houston picks Spiller at 9, Clausen picked at 20 by Buffalo, according to them.

Nothing to it, nothing to worry about..

Link to listen if you care to though I summed it up for the most part:

I think that Iupati is a trap. To raw. He moves stiff and I'm not sold on him in this system. I agree, I would take a c/g and a tackle every year. Even if they are later round guys. ET would be well worth a trade up, since he could play CB for a time until we can get more depth there and move him to FS. We need DT's but after McCoy. Suh, and Dan Williams I don't think there is a drop off till the 5th ish round.

His pass-blocking needs work...no doubt about it, but he's a stout run blocker, which we could definitely use.

I agree with the main idea here - we're a lot closer than we have been in terms of needs (though I think maybe we still need more than you list, e.g. a S and another OL).

What I do see (in contrast to previous years) is that I'm less worried about our later-round picks than I have been. In past years, I would feel that we could find someone to improve our team significantly, even in the later rounds. Now, I'm not so sure how useful those 6th and 7th round picks are going to be. I wouldn't mind us using some of the late-round picks to improve our position a bit in earlier rounds. It's difficult for me to see the 6th/7th round picks giving us significant improvement in most areas (maybe you find depth at DT or on the OL, or a special teams specialist), enough to beat out those already on the team. On the other hand, I could see a situation in rounds 3-5 where those picks could let us move up a few slots and grab a player we want. In prior years, I have been all for the "trade down and get more picks" approach, but this year, I'd be OK if they moved up.

For the earlier picks, though, we have some real needs, and we should be able to get some good players who can really help us in rounds 1-3. I'd hate to see us with less than 3 picks in those first three rounds, and so I don't like the idea of giving up a 1 and 2, especially to grab Spiller.

It's just speculation from one of the millions of mock drafts out there. The draft is this week, so they need to drum up more interest in their radio show without repeating Kiper and McShay's picks each week.

I share this exact logic of thinking with you. We have not addressed the secondary issue for years now. I would like Thomas #1 (of course), Kyle Wilson #2. If both of those are gone, maybe on Matthews if there is no other option at S/CB. I just hope we go that route. I think Gerhart would be excellent value and a great choice if we got him. Hes the exact back we want!

A big bruiser that has a nose for the endzone.

I just don't think he fits what they want as a guard. I like Petris in the 3-4 range. Fit's more what we do, yet is pretty stout at the Point of attack. There are alot of guards who are more game ready and who fit what we do in the 3-5 range, IMO.

Good point. We will have draft picks not make our team this year, which hasn't really happened in a while. I could be totally behind using our 2 6ths for a 5th. Then grab a raw OG/C/Return man in the 7th. He may or may not make it, but it's a flyer. You can never go wrong with drafting linemen, even late rounders.

Spiller looks like another Reggie Bush to me, I don't want him. I could be wrong about him though. No way to tell until he's drafted and playing on a team though.

I would rather the Texans take a DB first, then lineman (D or O), then a RB in the 3rd. The problem with what my take on it is, this draft is deeper in DBs than in RBs. In the 3rd round pickings might get a little thin on RBs, but there should still be some good undrafted DBs in the 3rd round.

I guess we don't have long to see what they do though. After Friday night we'll all be discussing the first three rounds as history.

Value Chart = Broken.

Bills won't want to pay top ten money in their market. They would be happy to trade down a couple of times and take McCoy or Tebow.

Good post. There is no way to tell if he is Reggie Bush 2.0 or Chris Johnson 2.0.

Can he get the tough yards in the middle? Is he more than a return man who can catch passes out of the flats?

I am leaning towards him being reggie bush 2.0. But I have been wrong before. lol

Just check out his highlights. Its all kickoff returns, and runs where he doesnt get touched to the outside. I want to see him break a tackle, stiff arm someone and then break away. I dont see that.

Just looking for highlight videos and found this one....he has some nice moves up the middle and then burns defenses. Yes, the NFL is a different game, but Spiller's capable of hitting that hole and making the defense react rather than juking and dancing because of the defense.

24 seconds.
1 minute.

Some returns that make Jacoby Jones look old and slow...some jukes that make BC defenders look silly...

I could definitely see the reasoning the front office would consider moving up for the guy....that and his teammates absolutely agree that he was the heart and soul of the team. He's been very humble and seemed willing to do anything for whatever team drafts him in every interview I've heard him do. If we ended up with him, I'd not complain for a second.

Isn't Rone Dayne still out there? He was good in college too

I think you're being dramatic on people talking about gapping holes. We do have holes and like you pointed out the two worst at RB and CB.

Let me clarify my statement better. Do you think moving up to the 10th and nabbing whomever we have targeted is going to solidly put the team into the playoffs and make a run? The only guys I see available at 10 that would be light years ahead of the rest of who'd be available are Earl Thomas and maybe one of the better LT's drops there. Outside shot of Haden being there as well.

Of our 2 need spots at RB, a legit FS, and a CB after the top tier guys come off the board the drop off isn't a chasm with the rest. There's just not value in making that move unless someone elite falls there. I don't mind reaching for a guy at 20, but I do mind moving up massively to reach on a guy.

Spiller has definitely grown on me as a possible pick. Normally against 1st Round RBs. I think he'll turn out to be a cross between Reggie Bush and Chris Johnson. Better inside runner than Bush, but not quite the force that Johnson is. Spiller, Slaton and Foster could turn out to be a great backfield. I'd also would want a more powerful guy too, Charles Scott in the 5th/6th to be our redzone attacker.

I wouldn't really want to give up our 2nd round pick... or any for that matter. We need to get ahead of San Fran/Seattle/NYG if Spiller slips past the Jags. I'd entertain giving up a 3rd to move up for him but still wouldn't be OVERLY excited. This draft is deep as well all "know" so a team may be more likely to move down for 'less' than normal due to its depth. Definitely go CB in the 2nd round

1st - CJ Spiller (RB)
2nd - Brandon Ghee / Kareem Jackson (CB)
3rd - Part of trade to get Spiller
4th - Marshall Newhouse OG
5th - Jay Ross DT
6th - Charles Scott RB
6th - Adam Ulatoski OG
7th - Kyle McCarthy S

This thread has had me thinking just for fun - exactly who would I be willing to give up both the 1st and 2nd round pick for?

None of the players that tend to fall in the 11-19 spots in mock drafts seem like they're worth it, to me. Spiller or Matthews could be available at 20, and for that matter, so could Wilson, Haden, or Thomas. I certainly wouldn't give up a #2 for any of them, and the other positions (e.g. DT Dan Williams) aren't enough of a need for me to target.

So, that leaves the players that generally tend to be top-10 picks, and would certainly not make it to us at 20. I think we've got three groups:

First, there are the DTs, Suh and McCoy. Never mind that there's no way they would be available to us for a 1st and 2nd. I can't say I'd be happy about giving up a 1 and 2 for them, since it would mean that either RB or DB (our two biggest needs) wouldn't get addressed until round 4. But, DT is an area of need (just not as much), and you'd basically be getting one of the top two players in the draft, according to most, so it seems it would be worth it.

Second, there are the OTs. For the same reason as DT, I wouldn't be real happy about paying that much for an OT, but I do think that our OL is a weak point, and needs improvement (but more in the interior than at tackle). I've heard too many questions about Bulaga and Campbell, so I'll say "no thanks" for them. Okung wouldn't fall, but he seems like a solid, reliable, pick were a miracle to happen. I'm not familiar enough with the others (Trent Williams and Anthony Davis) to know how they stack up, so I'm leaning against choosing one of them.

Finally, there's Eric Berry. This would be a top-notch pick at a position of great need for us. If he did fall low enough that we could get him for a 1 and 2, I would be OK with that. And, unlike Suh/McCoy/Okung, I think it's very unlikely but not completely out of the question that this could happen - he would have to slip a bit to pick 9 or 10, and we'd have to have a trading partner really interested in moving down, and no one more interested than us in moving up. If we picked up him and someone like Gerhart or Tate in the 3rd, that would be a very successful first two days, to me.

If we trade up to 9 it is because one of the bluechippers fell to that spot on defense (Suh, Mccoy, Berry, or Thomas) with Thomas being the most likely of the four to actually be at # 9. This is a good spot because it allows us to leapfrog division-rival Jacksonville for a top tier prospect that can be a major contributor for the team.

I am all for trading up if one of those players are on the board. I'd like to see the FO show us they are gonna pull out all the stops to field a playoff team by making a big splash in the draft. We are extremely conservative under this regime which has caused us to progress at a snail's pace. This team is trending upward but the city of Houston is tired of watching the playoffs every year.

We need to see real progress and that means the Houston Texans make some serious personnel moves that will play a key role in us making the playoffs!!!

Buried in Big Ben news, the Steelers GM Colbert may be thinking it could be fruitful to trade down from 18. Here's the statement and the reasoning. The Texans (at 20) may be looking for "team in need" offers on, likewise, a sweet deal. Just predraft "coach-speak," but still interesting.

A lot of folks think the Steelers will take Florida center Maurkice Pouncey, but Colbert said don't be surprised if they moved from the No. 18 overall pick. He estimated there was a 70-75% chance they'd keep the pick, a 5% chance they'd move up, and a greater chance they would move back.

Colbert expects a lot of interest in the pick, especially with such a deep defensive class. He says there are more 300-pound defenders that can run and conversion outside linebacker prospects than any class in memory.

Those are just the prospects a 3-4 defense needs. Unfortunately for long-time 3-4 teams like Pittsburgh and New England, nearly half of the league is now looking for similar players.

Yeah kast you have to go all the way back to last year . Rare bird indeed.
