Bradford intends to enter NFL draft after surgery

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford will have season-ending shoulder surgery and expects to enter the NFL draft in April.

The Oklahoma quarterback injured his right, throwing shoulder twice this season, most recently against Texas on Oct. 10.

The school announced Sunday that Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. Bradford is expected to address reporters following the Sooners’ practice on Monday night in Norman, Okla.

“I dreamed about coming to Oklahoma my whole life,” Bradford said Sunday in a statement. “That’s the reason I came back for this season. And I came back to play, not sit on the bench. That’s the reason I tried to play after the injury. I’m very disappointed that it didn’t work out differently.

“Under these circumstances, and after talking to several people, this is the right thing for me to do at this point.”

Bradford passed up the chance to be a first-round NFL draft pick this year— he was projected as high as No. 1 overall—to play another season with the Sooners, who he grew up following as a child in Oklahoma City.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the first QB taken. Provided the surgery is successful and I guess there is no reason to think it won't be.

Lots of questionmarks .... Lot of money to give a guy who may or may not be healthy being the first QB taken.


Of the other QB's draft elegible , how high would the first one go at this point ?

I see Bradford going very, very early. Of the teams that are, lets be nice, not doing amazingly well this year, there are a few QB questionmarks. The Rams have an aging Bulger, and a franchise QB could be useful. The Redskins, well, heck knows what they're up to. Jason Campbell is hot and cold, and then the two young backups seem not to be in vogue with the (current) coaching staff, will depend on who replaces Zorn I think. The Titans still have their VY experiment to finish so are no-goers. The Browns seem to have no luck with their of their QBs, although I'd still be surprised if they hit the first round for a QB again, so soon after Quinn. Tampa have their young QB in Freeman. The Panthers could really do with a QB, and I think Bradford would fit the mould very nicely with the strong running game around him.

I think he'll end up landing in Carolina, St Louis, or perhaps Seattle. As things stand at the moment, a lot of the struggling teams are in the process of getting their new QB into their team, or have recently been burned in the first round for a QB.

Either way, I can see Bradford going early.

Too bad we have Carolina's first rounder :). Hope we don't get near Bradford though. That guy has bust written all over him.

Love the Horns but I seriously think Bradford will be taken before Colt.

Provided this shoulder issue is cleared up with the surgery he's having obviously.
 
If I were running a NFL team I would take Bradford, Clausen, and maybe even Jake Locker before McCoy.
 
What a year to need a QB. Should all be gone by Round 2.

since there are so many quality quarterbacks, several of them are guaranteed to return their senior year.

From what I've seen of them this year, Clausen and Snead could definitely do with another year at college level before declaring.

The trouble with this year and the whole rookie cap situation is it will be getting players to declare before they really should be. The only saving grace may be that players look at the large list of others who are declaring, and keep away as it'll hurt their position too much.

I agree with that. I think Snead definitely needs another year.

I don't know about Clausen though. Would another year in college help him? Definitely. But he is probably the top ranked QB in this class so I don't really see what he has to gain from it financially. He would be taking the same exact risk that Bradford just had backfire on him.

No matter what bias anyone may have about Clausen or Notre Dame, you have to admit that this kid has all the tools to be successful.

You can take solace in the fact that UT beat OU this year, but you might want to give up this pipe dream now. An injured and operated-on Bradford will be picked several QB's before McCoy. That's just the way it is.
 
I would think most high schoolers would dream of the NFL after maybe two years in college if they are good. To turn down a top 15 selection to "feel the experience" is immature. For majority of college teams the coaching does little to prepare for the pros. U.T. is a prime example. Take the $ and get the best coaching you can at the NFL level. If a player can raise his draft status to top 8 from say #15 by remaining another year, maybe. I think Bradford listened to his fan club and made a very poor financial decision.

Bad business decision would be a good description. Immature is probably the last thing I would say.

Barring injury, I think your wrong. McCoy's stock has done nothing but rise and should continue to do so. Its not like I'm in left field here...there are a LOT of "experts" who feel the same.

I'm not so sure about that. Bradford has had first round pick written on him for two years now.

Never on any of the sources that I go to for information have I ever seen Colt listed as a probable first rounder.

I love Colt to death but the guy is a senior in college and still nobody has taught him how to read defenses. Nearly every throw he makes is a quick 5 yd route and if his first option isn't open he has no clue where to go so he holds the ball and either has to run or take a sack.

Been perusing a few mocks and man are they all over the place. I'll admit, most have Bradford ahead of McCoy though.

I was under the impression that Bradford's rehab will take him right up until the combine / draft. Seems awfully risky to me.

Ah, I understand now. I know I am biased, but Bradford seems to be the better pro QB. I like his arm better, and I think Bradford reads defenses better. That said, it would have been nice to see him behind the current line, see how he does under pressure.

I personally would not draft McCoy in the first. I am not a fan of that offense, and he does not attempt many pro style passes. I would rank the draft eligible QB's like this:

Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen
Oklahoma's Sam Bradford
Washington's Jake Locker
Texas' Colt McCoy
Florida's Tim Tebow
Central Michigan's Dan LeFavour
Ole Miss' Jevan Snead
Cincinnati's Tony Pike
Fordham's John Skelton
Western Michigan's Tim Hiller

Bradford's injury isn't actually that big of a deal if rehabbed correctly.

The reason he re injured it was because him and Stoops were both in a rush to get him back on the field for the Texas game. He wasn't ready.

20 something year olds (immaturity) usually do not make good business decisions. That's why colleges have sexy young females around when a high schooler comes to visit.
 
enough film on file to allow Bradford NECESSARY rehab time without impacting his ultimate draft grade by any knowledgeable NFL GM. He will however want to prove his recovery time table is on track @ some point in the process, whether its @ the Combine, Pro-day or private workouts :truck:
