UT vs Texas Tech

My notes on the game:

Taylor Potts is going to be awesome next year. He is a little flaky when under pressure but he is easily the most physically talented QB that Leach has ever had in this system.

The Texas offense has started poorly in all three games this season and they were especially poor tonight. A lot of the credit should go to Ruffin McNeil because that guy always draws up a top notch gameplan. If he had better athletes on defense to work with (he has a few, but not enough), Tech could really do some damage.

The Texas defense was amazing for most of the night. They were caught off guard on the first drive but were able to hold Tech to a field goal. Holding Tech to 3 in the first half was a monstrous accomplishment and holding them to 24 in an entire game is pretty good. We got a little soft in the third quarter and I don't even need to go into the fourth quarter. We played prevent defense (the dumbest defensive concept ever created) pretty much the whole quarter, which bloated Tech's passing numbers.

I know someone is going to counter this with the "Tech had 420 passing yards argument", but anybody can get to 420 if they throw the ball 62 times. When playing Tech, I'm more worried about yards per play than total yards, Potts only got 6.8 yards per pass attempt and the Tech offense was held to 5.2 yards per play. I'll take that against Tech's offense every sinlge time.

Good takes Bah. It was a good game to watch and I'm just happy that Tech held their own in a hostile environment against the #2 team in the country.

Muschamp had a great game plan put together for the game and Tech never really seemed to get into a groove offensively. Luckily Ruffin Mcneil also had a good plan which kept the game close.

Potts looked great in only his 3rd start. To go into Austin and play with the poise and confidence that he had really impressed me. He showed a lot of heart and tenacity by staying in the game after that brutal hit he took that forced the fumble. I wouldn't be surprised if he lost consciousness for a moment before he hit the ground, and then he just popped right back up. But the thing that impressed me the most was the touch he had on his passes. I had hyped this kids arm up to anybody willing to listen to me and then he came out throwing soft touch passes over WR's shoulders on perfectly executed timing patterns. The arm is there, but the fact that he has already learned not to rocket every pass really impressed me.

A couple of questions though,

Is helmet to helmet contact legal in college? If not then the refs blew a big call on the Potts fumble.

Is inducing a false start legal? I'm pretty sure that this is only a rule in the NFL but either way the Longhorns did a great job of getting our guys to jump.

Good Game Texas, we'll see you next year at the Jones (aka Davey Jones Locker)

As long as the defenders don't jump into the neutral zone or mimic the noise of the QB calling for the ball then they can do whatever they want to get the o line to move.

I don't know if it was Muschamp or Giles' idea to have the d line moving all around before the snap but you could tell Tech had no clue who to block on some plays and the constant movement led to at least four or five false starts by the Tech o line.

Colt had the flu last week.

I'm going to use that as an excuse for his erratic play against Tech.

I would love to use that as an excuse but Colt has been a little sloppy in the first half of each game this season and then come out in the second half and dominated.

its a fact that he had the flu and was under quarantine for a few days.

not an excuse, but is a disruption to your routine and preparation. the guy was wearing a mask.

whatever the reason, his performance was not Heisman caliber but neither was Tebows. The kid from California Jahvid Best could come out of nowhere and thieve the Heisman from the 3 headed dragon of Colt,Bradford,Tebow.

I think this game showed that Tech deserved to be ranked and that their Junior QB are not to be taken lightly by the rest of the Big12. They looked crisp and they just dropped too many passes and fumbled too many times. Tech really impressed me aside from Leach's antics at the end of the 1st Half with the fake kneel play. That play is illegal and for Leach not to know that is pretty hilarious. Total jackarse.

Well that's my excuse for Colt and I'm sticking to it...

I watched some of that Florida/UT game. Tebow has an odd throwing motion to me.

It looks odd to almost everyone. I'm also confused as to how he is so accurate because he rarely throws a spiral.

I swear he throws one of the ugliest balls in college football and yet it always seems to get where it's supposed to go.

I'm going to say that he has the same throwing motion as Philip Rivers did coming out of college....seems he's the guy I remember somebody comparing him to. Correct me anybody if that's wrong.

Tebow comes to play though. Nobody can question the guy's intensity and drive. You can't teach somebody that.

I'm just not sure how that will work in the NFL.

Hmmm....I'll do some research when I have the time...I thought Rivers was the guy coming out of college that had some sort of underhanded delivery. Maybe I got the wrong QB but I thought it was him.

Good win but still didn't look very good. Going to need to play a lot better against a team who is going to play all four quarters strong.

Tech is a good team and they always bring it strong when they play Texas. But I agree that a better effort will be needed from the offense if we are going to make it 4 out of 5 against OU.

I don't normally watch college football due to lack of interest because I didn't go to college to get edumakated. My Microsoft certifications are all I need to keep in the job market. However, if the U of H is going to make some noise, I'll watch the home town team. I'll be tuned in tonight for the Coogs. :)
