2009 NFL Draft Thread

Bleh. Enjoyed day 1, and even Caldwell. Was good with the first CB and the 2 TE's but another CB and a safety? Dont we have these players already on our squad? How many Brandon Harrison's do we need?

some poster i know had this picture as his abator cos troy looks so goofy in it. veryone on that site is loling when theyve just seen who he is on tv,

4 good picks - Cushing, Barwin, Caldwell, Casey

4 head stracthers - Quin, Hill, McCain, Nolan

I have to say that I'm very disappointed in the Day 2 picks by the Texans. They may turn out to be good picks. Nobody knows yet. But there were so many reaches by Smith today that it's unbelievable. And how could they not draft one RB? Hell, teams like Carolina, San Diego, and Kansas City who don't even need RBs drafted them! Bad move. I have to give this draft a "C" just because of the picks I feel they got right.

Trevor Canfield and Greg Isander are both available and I want these guys signed and given a chance to become future Texans!!!! :pirate:

Initial Grades, gut feelings:

Brian Cushing, OLB, USC - B+

Connor Barwin, DE, Cincinnati - A

Antoine Caldwell, C/G, Alabama - B

Glover Quinn, CB, New Mexico - C

Anthony Hill, TE, North Carolina State - B-

James Casey, TE, Rice - B-

Brice McCain, CB, Utah - C

Troy Nolan, S, Arizona State - C

Overall Grade: Using how my school does gpa (A=4, B+=3.3 etc... First 2 picks worth 5 credit hours, next two worth 4, etc)

2.7566 = B-

B+ = 3.7 at your school? It's 3.25 at my school.

I view this differently. I think they went BPA so to speak. Our draft really reminds me of a Belichik/New England kind of draft. I think Kubiak & Smith got players they really think highly of... maybe they weren't necessarily at positions of need, but they have a feeling these guys are going to be really good football players. As fans, that's all we can ask.

As for the later round guys- the DB's. It's easy for us to criticize them b/c we've never really even heard of them and definitely never watched them or studied them (maybe a few on here have seen them a little). The bottom line is that our Defensive Secondary is not a strength on this team and we've got to find answers there- this year and in the future. No clue what's going on with Dunta's future. We got some guys to develop and see if they stick. If one of them works out well in our secondary then that's is very very good for us.

We're all dissappointed we didn't get a RB. I think a lot of fans are thinking "meh" and are dissappointed b/c we didn't get "the player THEY wanted."

exactly. well said.

I recently graduated from BYU so I may be more familiar with the MWC then most.

I don't know Glover well personally but New Mexico plays a 3-3-5. They traditionally play a pressure defense. Corners press and play bump and run and are often left out on island. I know his highlights show him in zones but I am sure he played a lot of man defense too.

McCain is cover corner that likes to play receivers stride for stride. I don't remember him making a lot of tackles but he defended a large number of passes.

My Thoughts... not that y'all really care! LOL

1st- LB Brian Cushing: Popular and likely pick. Real solid player, will start at SLB and completes our LB position. Good starters, good depth. Can take on the blockers, stop the run, rush the passer and break up some passes. Smart, blue collar, hard worker, intense and aggressive. I really wanted Malcolm Jenkins but N.O. messed that up.

2nd- DE- Connor Barwin: Versatile and great athlete. Will be our situational pass rusher and may even stand up at LB on some downs depending on the package. Another hard working smart player. I like the depth we've got at DE now with Mario/Smith and Barwin/Bulman. I really wanted William Moore or Rashad Johnson here.

3rd- C/G- Antoine Caldwell: Another good pick. Will come in as back up C and Guard. I can see him end up starting one day but right now should be great depth. This was a need for us- enterior OL. He adds some more toughness and power- I like this for the RZ. Will save a roster spot since he can play 2 positions (or more) and so can Myers. Texans were targeting Shonn Greene or Glen Coffey but they were taken. Caldwell is a leader and will be here a long time. Rashad Johnson was still here! But I'm happy with this pick.

4th- TE Anthony Hill: Didn't expect this at all. More I read the more I like. Big TE that is a superior tackle. Is said to be a 3rd tackle out there. Great for the red zone for blocking or even being a target for the TD pass.

5th- UTILITY James Casey: This surprised me even more. I love this kid and wanted him so bad but with taking TE in the 4th I thought there'd be no way to pick him. Wrong! He was the BPA and we took him. I think he'll have a great career here and we'll really get a lot of use out of him, he'll be a great contributor and another guy to save a roster spot. He's so versatile.

7th- FS Troy Nolan: Didn't really know anything about this guy but I love the pick. I mean seriously guys you can't get too upset over a 7th rounder. This guy could be the next Ed Reed and it's worth the risk. The guy has exceptional ball skills, is a ball hawk, not fast... but he has very good instincts. I'll take that any day of the week. He'll come up and tackle and lay the hit. Great pick to try and develop.

I may be in the minority but I really do like our draft. The two picks I can't comment on are the 4th and 6th round Cornerbacks. I don't know anything about them I didn't learn today. You gotta keep taking Cornerbacks. So while I'm not thrilled, I understand and i'm fine with them. It seems to me there was only a few RB's we liked but they went before us. See Greene and Coffee. Possibly Gartrell and Brown too?

Well great, Rashad Jennings to the freakin Jags. That's just great! Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great!!!:splits:

I'd like to say that the rapper they have on NFL Network rapping some "dreamer" song is really, really bad. I didn't really notice it until my girlfriend said something to me, but now I can't help but mute it when he comes on.

Every team in the AFC South drafted at least one RB. Indy got Donald Brown, Titans got Javon Ringer, and Jags got (sigh) Rashad Jennings. The one team in the AFC South that needed another RB didn't draft one. Why? Indy has Addai, Titans have Lenwhale and Johnson, Jags have Mojo and Greg Jones. They didn't need another RB as bad as the Texans did. But somehow Smith and Kubiak try to outthink things and not draft a RB just because the two they were targeting got scooped up early in the 3rd round. It doesn't make sense.

There's some decent RBs available in FA now in Marlon Lucky and Ian Johnson. Hopefully they pick one of them up. If Smith decides to pick up another Bronco reject, I'll lose it. Enough with that crap already!

A really solid first 3 rounds in my books and some useful prospects later on.

I'm still happy to drink the Smithiak Koolaid.

Grade:B (would of been higher if I thought any of the DBs could contribute from day one)

We'll pick up another 8-12 guys as UDFAs.
at least 2 of those will be RBs

...and probably a couple of WRs
