2009 NFL Draft Thread

The top power RBs (Greene, Brown, and Jennings) are still on the board. I like the Texans chances at grabbing one of these guys in the 3rd.

Agreed. I think we will have our pick of 2 of them.

Greene 1, Jennings 2, Brown 3.

Falcons took Moore- so I'm looking at Rashad Johnson with our 3rd. If not, maybe Rashad Jennings, Andre Brown... where's Glenn Coffee supposed to go (maybe our 4th?)

1. Briand Cushing SLB
2. Connor Barwin DE
3. Rashad Johnson FS
4. Roy Miller DT
4. Glenn Coffee RB

I could live with it!

I'm really confused by some of our moves today....it feels like we're reaching in this draft.

No what they are saying....when they send five it is unacceptable now that no one gets there. Y'all were all hot for bush and the Blitzing....well they just bought the guy two missiles. Two weapons he can send in several directions and in multiple d-line games. Now I'm not going to argue that Brawin is ready yet to stand up at will....I don't know..you don't know....What is a fact is he has the foot speed to cover any RB we will see out of the backfield. What we do know is they saw Sidbury up close....who would of been perfect in the roll of situational pass rusher.....and they chose Coner Barwin. He is the kind of a guy if the coaches ask him to run through a brick wall, he won't ask how far back do you want the hole coach.....he'll just go run into it and leave as big a hole as he can. I'm reading this pick as another weapon for Bush. With Belichik holding the picks they are holding.....fixing to run out of the first step guys.....they're just about gone. And I've been telling you...you're not going to out cover Manning. It's going to be nice to see the guy with dirty uni for a change. Barwin is a great pick and a great prospect......Kinda like Owen Daniels....at linebacker. He's raw.....but he moved to DE with absolutely no experience and led the conference with eleven sacks......to me it's mind boggling what he could become with a little pro coaching. And he also covers TE-H very well thank you very much. OD gets dinged....he can play it.

I'm sorry your guy(s) didn't get picked....sulk ***** and moan, then get on board. If you want the division crown.....gotta get the sack total off of twenty five....and you have to get Manning in the dirt.

I swear some of you think we can get every prospect out there. We got two FOOTBALL players. There was no trade down in the first because the Jets traded up. A couple of teams traded their 1st next year for a freakin 2nd!!!!

I'm just upset that we haven't adressed the secondary. We have 3-7 tomorrow though.

Some of you need to chill out.

Is it just me or does anyone notice errors being made by the "analysts" on NFL Network?
They are just like us!

Yeah, like Mayock said Everette Brown is just a bull rusher!
Maybe he's been watching too many tapes he got confused.
I know I did all the times, LOL!

I wouldn't mind that, but another DT?
(I like Roy, don't get me wrong).

I think they fill a need with Cushing, but I still think we should have traded back for two seconds.

I'm good with today's picks. They addressed the defense which is what was holding us back last year. We'll still to get a CB though, Dunta Robinson is talking about not coming to camp now. I'm starting to get tired of listening to Dunta's BS.

but he moved to DE with absolutely no experence and led the conference with eleven sacks......to me it's mind boggeling what he could become with a little pro coaching.

Great point TTP.

To make the plays he did while going on gut instinct and little technique/experience.... that is some huge potential right there.

Good point. I'd like to see us pick up a RB in Day 2, and also maybe some secondary help. Maybe pick up Chip Vaughn to address that issue.

If you want Chip then you better hope we take him in the 3rd and take a RB in the fourth, because Chip will be bye bye.

Same here......some people are complaining about not being "wowed" by our draft, but I'm glad it's not so exciting - that means we are getting better! I don't ever want to have the "excitement" of our previous drafts!!!!!

Threetoedpete-

Concerning our sack production from last year going forward... I really like what we did. The staff really seems like like Antonio Smith and then wants to move him inside next to Amobi on passing downs. I think Tim Bulman is going to do really well with this role as a situational pass rusher and then add in Connor Barwin. I think he's another hard working effort guy that is going to pass the rusher too. I really hope our pressures and sacks increase this year and totally think we're much better than we were last year!! Gotta get Peyton's jersey dirty more.

So who are the Texans target in rounds 3 and 4? I assume situational pass rushers like Sidbury are out of the question now with Barwin.

We need secondary help. Running back help. Interior o-line depth.

DJ Moore and Asher Allen are out there at corner. Shonn Greene and Rashad Jennings at RB. Chip Vaughn at safety. Jamon Meredith and Duke Robinson at OL.

I'm really shocked as every one else they didn't take one of the safetys on the board....I thought also there was an outside chance that they'd take Green. But after Owen Daniels in '06, I'd go slow in agonizing over the Barwin pick. They didn't throw a dart at their big board....there was a reason they did it. Agreed, Bulman played very well at the end of the year....and they still took Barwin...I'm sure we'll get the spin tomorrow.

I'm guessing they will take the best big back they can get their hands on to give Steve a ten to twelve touch rest per game My goal would to be make sure we had him at 100 % for those last two games. They've been talking up Criss again. Do you believe that one that he'll finally be healthy ?

I like the two players we've drafted so far and I think we might pick up a safety on Day Two, if not the Texans might let our safeties play this season and then try and land Taylor Mays in next years draft.

Well said when it comes to getting guys who are "players" with attitude that like making plays. My concern with Sushing is simple. Alot of big players have busted because they all of a sudden caught the injury bug when they got here. Cushing has been hurt every year. You can say it is because he likes to play hard nosed but you also can say that he got hurt against college comp. Now he is moving up to bigger and faster guys. Seems to me that might lead to more nicks. I hope I'm wrong. So you are right when it comes to the type of guys the Texans got. But it doesn't make people bitchers or moaners because there are legit concerns.

I think Chris Brown is done. We can move on with Slaton, Moats, and our RB this year. Maybe get a RB from another team with a low draft pick. I hear Denver is having a yard sale on their RB's.

I want us to try and get Lawerence Sidbury as well as Greg Isander. There are some good RBs still on the board and I would love to see a Steve Slaton/Rashad Jennigs or Shon Greene combination.

ok give us your scouting report on him. what plays you didnt like? etc etc...

every yr theres one guy

yeah and they are...
Jason Babin
Travis Johnson
Jabar Gafney
Jacoby Jones ...ok maybe not..one more costly fumble...

( Oh yeah... Amobi...is not safe from being a bust....he needs to produce.)

I'd pick Michael Pittman if anyone... I liked the way he ran last season all things considered.

Hey TT mock group...

Congrats to those that landed on their pick. I picked Cushing succesfully and saw that some other picks were right to.

I lol'd on this one though. Our Mr. Irrelevant was the Oakland Raiders 2nd round pick!!!!!!!!

As Texans fans we shouldn'e be complaining. I'll admit I was no fan of Mario Williams and I was hoping to draft D'Brick but look at how Mario turned out. With all the draft picks we've had we have had some busts as well as some good pros (Mario, DeMeco, OD, AJ) so not all is lost.

Even the Broncos are giving mario some cred...this is straight from one of there message boards:

Why not wait til the season starts to write McD off? Remember when everyone clowned Houston for picking Mario Williams over Bush? Now who's laughing? Houston has a probowl DE and the Saints have a guy who can't take a hit.

I can't access the Raiders message board but the CBS board has a bunch of pissed off fans as well as the Broncos who are going insane and giving up on the team before the draft is even over!

I'm not sure why so many people are bringing up Mario Williams and comparing the reaction of that pick to this years. The people who didn't like the Mario pick a) didn't watch Mario in college and/or b) desperately wanted Bush or VY.

Mario was a complete beast in college.

This year is actually quite different from that year. Almost everybody has seen Cushing play, unlike Mario Williams. Cushing's negatives are that he may have maxed out and he is injury prone. Mario was a guy people thought may be "too raw", and I don't remember ever hearing about Mario being injured in college.

Two different situations completely. Mario Williams had wayyyyyy less downside than Cushing does. I'm not sure I really understand the comparisons at all to be honest.

One person I know is converting from a Raider fan into a Giant fan.

Plus, Mario was likely to go at #2 anyways.

don't feel like a shiny happy Texan today, 1st day haul C-

That's about what I would give them.

I was thinking C+ on the Cushing pick, untill they drafted Barwin to take the role of 3rd down pass rush specialist. That lowers Cushing's value considerably as a two down player.

D+ on Cushing
B+ on Barwin as a player, but C+ as a draft grade since it actually devalues your 1st round pick.

That Barwin pick really gives me the creeps. That seems a lot like the Joppru pick.

Damn, today just didn't do anything for me at all.

I sure hope I'm wrong.

Jesus Christ, Mitchell is friggin' fast!!!! WTH is his 40 time like a 4.2?
I think he ran a 4.4 at his pro day. Remember that for DB's it's not the forty time that is important. What you're seeing are his awareness, play recognition and burst. It's just like a RB's initial burst through the hole. The DB's gotta break on the ball quickly... not really run there at full speed if that makes sense.

According to Frank Bush:

"The thing we like about him is his versatility, that he’s a kid that understands the nickel package, he understands the regular packages and stuff. This kid can come in quite frankly and be a starting regular defense and also nickel defense.”

That means Cushing is still a 3 down player. The difference is he will still be playing LB on 3rd down instead of DE as you suggest.

Geez, watch some highlights of barwin or read some of what the scouts say. I thought he would go early in the second and we got him mid second. I remember when they played OU this year he was a huge standout on defense. And don't give me this "he's a project" comment. A football player is a football player. Athleticism, coachability and work ethic translates on the field.

I really like the Barwin pick. I bet someone like Belichick is pissed because he traded back and missed on him.

For me, the only reason to be upset is that Jenkins, Chung and Delmas were gone before we had the chance to pick em.

BTW, draft grades are completely useless. I have never seen an accurate grade and they are deceptive. Think about what some of these franchises had to give up to get there players.

Barwin has only played one season at DE. Hard to imagine him coming right in on Sundays and making an impact. I love the guy, but think fans will need to have some patience.
