Lions sign Stafford

Wow that's an insane amount for a guy who hasn't played a down of NFL football yet. Goodluck to him and the Lions.

This is getting flat out rediculous......I don't care if it causes a lockout and we miss a whole year of football, they have to fix that problem.

If Stafford busts, Detroit is just going to suck for atleast another 4 to 5 years.

I'm thinking he's not gonna be a bust...eventually one of their qb picks has to pan out. Stafford is that guy.

That's an insane amount of money. For Detroit's sake I hope he works out.

So do I, I was stationed up there for about 3 years and those people are about as hardcore as you can get......they live and die with that team, and right now the entire city is dying, literally..unemployment is through the roof (has been for years) and poverty is rampid. Detroit needs something/anything positive right now to lift some spirits around there.

$42 million guaranteed... that's craziness. Stafford could pull a vince young and still be able to buy over 200 brand new Ferrari's.

Ridiculous money, glad that it isn't the Texans having to pay it. Much better to be drafting down where we are.

Hopefully with the new CBA they will fix a rookie pay scale. Surely the veterans realise that the rookies are taking what is rightfully theirs.

Stafford will bust
I hate to say it, but I agree. Under different circumstances, I think he could succeed. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case.

I'd say they were 2 for 4.
Roy Williams didn't live up to his potential. You could say it worked out since they did get a lot for him from Dallas. BTW, it would be 2/3. It's insulting to Jerry Rice as well as Corey Bradford to call Mike Williams a WR.

Yes. This has to stop.

I agree also $41 million guaranteed. Thats more than Brady and Peyton isn't it? Rookies don't deserve anywhere near that kind of money. Actually none of them do but hey thats the luxury of a pro athlete I guess.

I'm calling it. Stafford will be a bust. A QB doesn't make a team. And a QB like Stafford doesn't have the talents to make up for a team who are awful.

And don't even get me started on the money. $41 million, and be could play as badly as I would. Its disgusting, really will start ruining teams before too long.

I knew this would happen and never wavered with all the Jason Smith talk, and Aaron Curry talk. NFL teams just do not pass on a possible franchise QB, no matter what you and I might do with the picks. Aaron Curry was never going #1 overall. It just was not going to happen. He was leverage. Plain and simple.

41 guaranteed. Motown Madness !
I dunno, maybe the Lions had to call Obama on this to get some Fed bailout
cash along with the auto guys ?

As a UGA fan, I hate to see him going to Detroit. Next to impossible to succeed there. But, maybe he sets them in the right direction, finally. Even if I think that Sanchez will likely be a better pro than Stafford.

Hopefully Knowshon Moreno will get to go to a good situation.

While youre right, I just kind of laughed thinking about everyone saying that exact same thing about Mario 2 or 3 days before the draft in 2006.

Stafford will do fine if the Lions shore up things around him. The Lions have a good RB and a stud WR, but I don't think their line is great.

The NFL needs to put a hard cap on rookie salaries. It is ok to put in incentives for production, but to overpay for a bust player cripples teams for years. This is what the NFL does not do well.

Agreed on all counts!

Folks, I'm the biggest SEC homer out there. So trust me when I tell you that Stafford is not that good of a QB. The guy had all kinds of offensive weapons around him in college. Moreno, Green (who is the next big thing at WR, sorry Julio), and Massoquoi. And he was wildly inconsistent last season. As a matter of fact, the last two seasons. $42 million for him is a truly horrible investment. I feel bad for the people of Detroit. The two highly-touted QBs in this draft remind me Carr/Harrington.

Not saying I disagree, but everyone saying he will be Carr/Harrington/Couch 2.0, just remember that MOST said that about Matt Ryan. I think he worked out okay.

And what did they say about Mario Williams? Workout wonder who didn't perform consistently.

I am not buying into the groupthink about the Lions botching another #1 pick. Maybe I'm guilty of engaging in the gambler's fallacy, but sooner or later one of their quarterback picks has to work out.

bottomline: everyone will be wrong about many players. no one will be right about everyone.

Matt Stafford is no where near the talent Ryans was coming out. That was not my point though.
1 The lions had the worst D in the history of the NFL last year.
2 The OL isnt even average
3 There will be better QB's coming out next year.
4 I could go on and on but its almost draft time and I dont care about the Lions. Point is its not about his talent its about whether taking a QB #1 was the right thing to do at this point in time. IMO it wasnt. We'll see!

I have to admit that Stafford's negatives don't seem nearly as questionable as Carr's back in 2002. At least Stafford's played against SEC defenses.

I think he has a better chance of being Jay Cutler 2.0 than David Carr 2.0.

you don't go from 0-16 to Super Bowl winner over night. it takes a while to build a franchise. and if you think there's a QB sitting here that you can't risk passing up on, i don't see why they would.

1. There is no Super Mario in this year's draft, so it doesn't make much sense to commit #1 overall money to a LB like Curry.

2. That may be true, but they used their #1 pick on a OT last year (Cherilus) and invested heavily in LT Backus a couple of years ago. How wise is it to pay #1 money to another tackle when you still need a franchise qb and have the opportunity to take one? They have other opportunities in this draft to address the offensive line.

3. Next year is a long time and there are no guarantees...will those qbs suck? Will they get hurt? Will the Lions be in position to take one?

4. Has the fracking draft started yet?

Someone tell me why a LIONS thread is in our forum and why the mods are so slow to move it to its space on this board
