Lions have backup deal with Curry, working on Stafford as first choice...

Texans34Life

I BLEED TEXANS!
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2009/04/source_lions_have_aaron_curry.html

According to a league source, the Detroit Lions have completed contract terms with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and the team is now waiting to see if it can reach an agreement with their No. 1 target, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford. The source said the Lions will not allow a decision to go beyond Friday and if a deal isn't done with Stafford by then, the team will sign Curry and take him with the first overall draft pick.

The source said he believes that Stafford's agent, Tom Condon, will eventually agree to a deal with the Lions but probably won't do it until it gets closer to the Friday deadline. The price of the contract can only go up in the final hours so Condon will likely push the issue as far as he feels he has something to gain.

The Lions, according to the source, aren't budging and are just waiting to see if Stafford accepts their deal before they move to Curry. The Lions have been adamant that they want to get their draft pick signed before the draft starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

If they sign Aaron Curry, I expect him to make an immediate impact and he will most likely switch over to the MLB spot, if he is selected. That being said having Ernie Simms, Aaron Curry, and Julian Peterson makes there LB corps even better.

Personally, I think this is a better move than Stafford. I dont trust any of the top name QB's in this draft. Curry will not be Hall of Fame material, but he will be a very good player for a long time.

This will shake up the draft for sure....teams will be trading up left and right to get sanchez, or freeman, so maybe texans can get some extra picks.....Or, Malcolm Jenkins will still be there

I think the lions have crashed & burned on so many QBs, they need to focus on another aspect of their team. Namely Defense. They need to become the Minnesota Vikings/Chicago Bears/Baltimore Ravens.... If they had a dominating defense when Kitna was their, I think they could've gone all the way.

I think Curry should be their pick, and later in the first, they need to go after Perry, or Davis.

If I was Stafford I'd consider this good news. I'd tell my agent to ask for 100 mil guaranteed...from the Lions only though.

From what I understand from PFT, Jason Smith and Stafford are with the same agency so it causes some conflict of interest. I'm really curious as to how they are handling that. One of the clients is probably getting screwed and not promoted to their full potential.

Curry and his agent are trying to undercut both of them knowing he'll make more money than if he were just to be drafted #3. Pretty good move.

That's what I would hate if I were a top prospect. The agency could very well be looking at their "bottom line" and coming up with their own mock drafts to see what kind of money they're going to make depending on which player goes where. Stafford has a better chance of dropping lower than Smith. So just from that standpoint if they could negotiate Stafford at #1, they're probably pretty confident Smith goes in the next few selections.

That's unfair to Smith since he could potentially be the best selection for the lions at #1. But it doesn't sound like he's a major player right now anyways.

This would be better off for both sides. and the league for that matter. Stafford drops to 4 and the Seahawks draft their QB of the future the Lions build their team up as Culpepper is apparently in shape (probably good for 1-2 seasons) and, because Curry undercut Stafford for the number one pick GMs across the league have something to wave in front of players faces and the price tag attached to unproven rookies doesn't rise too much (maybe i'm getting a little too optimistic with that last one).

This doesn't confirm that a deal has been reached. Just that they're meeting in hopes of finalizing something. Nothing's concrete though.

I do expect the Lions to come to terms with Stafford and Condon though.

Per the link, nfldraftbible.com reported Stafford that the lions and stafford had reached terms on an $80 million deal. Aren't these the same guys that bogusly said Matthews and Cushing tested positive for steroids and that Raji tested positive for marijuana?

Someones broken out their jump to conclusions mat.

There was another web site I was at that was reporting that a deal had been made and that the Lions are just waiting on Stafford and his agent, so its either Stafford or Curry as of now.

It wasn't nfldraftbible was it?

I thank god that we had some great players to choose from after out putrid season. For the record, I would pick Jason Smith. They have enough picks to get some good d later on.

If that is who is reporting it then I don't believe it.

I'll wait until someone else reports it.

They should be concentrating on one of the OT's.

I'm not going to say it's all on their Oline (cuz we went through that), but the Lions gave up 52 sacks last season. BUILD FROM THE INSIDE OUT!!

Good grief!

I think taking Curry is the best pick the Lions can make, especially if he is willing to take less money. Even if he isn't I take him.

I think Stafford will be a good QB. THey need to get a real guy who can get the ball to Calvin Johnson or he'll be gone the first moment that he can.

I don't see how anyone could realistically say to go with Culpepper. Culpepper is worse than any starting QB in the entire league. He was awful last season. The guy doesn't have any of the athleticism that he once had, he is slow and his mechanics are horrible. He was always a bad decision maker even with the Vikes. Culpepper is a baby also and very thin skinned. It's not fair to the team to strut Culpepper out there for another season.

Grab Stafford and then snag an OT with the 2nd pick in the draft.

I would rather have Curry than Stafford

I'd rather have the left tackle.....come back with he best D guy I can get my hands on....and then the C/G....o-line solved. But I feel ya....fix something. And as emotional as they all get about it, especially Mel Kiper.....I didn't see none of them around here with their check books out when HWSNBN(He Who Should Not Be Named) or Bosselli busted out offering help to our owner.

But I feel ya TexMex....fix something. There will be three franchise guys on the board next draft. If they are wise with their move backs....they would have enough ammo to choose between anyone of them....Bradford, Tebow, or McCoy.

And anyone of them will do a heck of a lot better with a roster that's been loaded up for them. Rather than Stafford (or Sanchez).....who will have to wait a year. I don't care how good you think he'll (they'll) be.

My short answer.....anyone who tells you you must draft the franchise QB first, is full of it. Especially Mel "the hair" Kiper. And I really don't care how loud he shouts it. Last time I checked a mans brains weren't in his tonsils. No doubt you have to have one to win.....but there isn't just one way to get one.

One way is a Hail Mary. The other is a slow methodical franchise building process. Just me, but after Detroit's forty year struggle at building a winner, I'd say the one which is doubt is the Hail Mary way.

Mel Kipers way.

I would take Curry because he is a much safer choice. I have almost zero doubt that Curry will be a pro-bowl calibur player. I can't say that about Stafford. He may boom, but on that team in particular he is more likely to bust. I feel sorry for whoever they pick though. Like Vinny said, I would ask for like 10 billion dollars. Send in Mini-me to ask.

Curry is their Plan "b". If the Stafford folks are looking for the moon.....they go to plan "b". They already...according to Charlie Cassserly, have an agreement in principle with the Curry representatives. We should know something solid , either way, sometime tomorrow. The Lion's want to announce the guy before the draft.

The interesting thing will be how far do both guys fall if they do not do the deal. Obviously curry's folks have looked at it....and they have determined, this is the wisest choice for their client. And the other is who will blink first. Stafford or Detroit.

i like stafford as a prospect much more than curry. I don't think Curry will be probowl, or even the best lb in this draft class

They are going to suck next year whether they get Stafford or not.

Maybe if they improve the other areas of their team they can let Culpepper take the beating this year and get their franchise guy next year. I think Bradford is a better prospect than Stafford and Detroit will probably have the #1 pick again next year.

As TTP said, there is more than one way to get there. You can get your franchise guy first and build your team around him or you can build your team and then get your franchise guy.

Interesting Ben. I love him as a prospect. I think he can play anywhere in a 4/3 and succeed. Who is your fave LB? :texflag:

What I think would be pretty funny if Curry drops into Sinlegtary's lap and he ends up with Willis and Curry. He ends up with two side line to side line guys. I know they need an up grade at OLT.... offensive play makers....Sanchez would be right for them, just saying.

If the Lions were smart, they would take Jason Smith. He has all the tools to be a top flight LT. he may never be a superstar but he could protect the left side for 10+ years. Stafford has bust written all over him. He has about as much talent as Rhett Bomar, and you could get him in the 3rd or 4th. The Lions will take Stafford and live to regret it.

Well you obviously don't think that Stafford will be that good then Bah. I think that Stafford is going to be a pretty good QB, so I don't see any reason on passing on the guy. Culpepper shouldn't even be in the NFL right now. The guy is absolute trash.

I hear what you're saying and all, but there is still no guarantees for next year and the Lions need to get a QB. They obviously feel that Stafford is the guy that can do the job, but right now it's all about contract issues. I think they'll get a deal done though.

ANd you mention that they are going to suck next year whether they get Stafford or not well the same thing goes for if they get Curry or not. They'll still suck and most likely be a top 5 draft team next year in which they can still get that top flight LB next season as well and that would be a lot more of a guarantee that it would be to get Bradford, because they might not be the worst team in the NFL next season.

I think Matthews will end up being the best choice at LB. I think Laurinitis and Curry are going to fail, and Cushing will be serviceable.

The only way I see Curry failing is by injury. The guy has everything you want in a LB, speed, size, intelligence, etc.

I think the USC LB's have better odds of failing. Maualuga's probably the best of the bunch and he's being pushed back in first by the talking heads.

People said Gallery was the safest pick in years. I just don't see it, and I watched a ton of ACC Football

I am for anything that pushes a top 10 guy to #15 for Houston and allows Texans a trade down opportunity. I mocked Detroit taking Monroe who is better "right now" tackle imo. Stafford would then fall creating more trade up deals for him & Sanchez. If I were Detroit, I think I'd go LT #1 to go next to Cherilus (sp) and #20 DE Robert Ayers if Texans let him pass. At #33 either Maualuga or Sean Smith. I think the veteran QB can hold it together for one more year. These picks would please most of the fan base who realizes this will not be a one year turn around. I can see Detroit at pick 1-15 next year which would get them a good QB in 1st and probably another starter in 2nd round.

Being one day before the draft I think it's safe to say that we have reached the point of over analyzation of these prospects.

I don't understand why everyone thinks teams will want to trade up for one of these QB's...

I actually think we are seeing eye to eye on this issue.

The only difference is that you think Stafford can be a franchise QB and I don't think he will be.

The only reason Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez came out early is because they know they can't compete in the NFL Draft against other quarterbacks like Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Tim Tebow. Imagine what the Lions would be doing or the overall draft would be like if all the guys mentioned enetered the draft.

Sanchez and Stafford would more than likely be taken ahead of both Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow had they entered this years draft.

What? I love Colt and all, but he isn't ever going to be some highly touted draft pick unless he somehow grows 3 or 4 inches this summer. And Tebow will most likely not be that high of a draft pick as a QB either, unless he shows that he has some rocket of an arm this next season.

Bradford is the only one out of the 3 that would have been a higher sought after guy, and once he decided to stay well yeah, Sanchez saw that as an opportunity.

Stafford isn't anything special. If they take him#1 overall I say they regret it.

Colt is listed as 6-3, which is plenty tall enough. His arm strength also improved dramatically from his sophomore to junior season.

I agree Bradford is easily ranked ahead of Stafford if he had declared. If Bradford and McCoy had declared then I don't think Sanchez ever would have. He is taking advantage of a weak QB class, which is smart.

I have a feeling that either Stafford will go no.1 or he'll drop like a rock. There is always a player who drops and in my mind he's candidate no.1.

I highly doubt that Colt will be a QB that is projected to be a first rounder Bah. He'll most likely be a 3rd round type of prospect or maybe even later than that sort of like how Chase Daniels is right now. Maybe he is listed at 6'3 but I don't believe he's that tall for a second. A lot of players get their height listed a bit higher for draft purposes.

DOn't get me wrong, I want Colt to be drafted high and become an NFL QB. I'd love for that to happen, but I don't think it will because NFL scouts will hate on him for his size.

And he is an extremely accurate thrower, but in that awful vanilla offense that Greg Davis runs, they barely ever let him throw down the field. It's not his fault, but it is what it is. He doesn't have a lot of arm strength for a down the field passer, but he could get better but even then he won't get enough opportunities in the season to really impress NFL scouts.

Colt McCoy is a much better pro prospect than Vince Young ever was, IMO. By the way, that was the opinion I was freely sharing in '06 and '07 as well. As long as McCoy is over 6' 1", with his over the top delivery, I don't think his heighth will cause him to drop far. He'll probably run in the 4.6 - 4.7 range. He really physically matured last season and his arm appears plenty strong as well. I think he'll be a first round pick, though I have no idea if he'll be considered in the top 5 or not.

Lions: Stafford’s The Guy

University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford will be tabbed by the Detroit Lions as the top overall pick of the draft despite the fact that they have yet to strike a deal at the negotiating table, according to Thomas George of NFL.com, citing a Lions team source.

Neither Stafford’s camp or the Lions are reportedly concerned about the absence of a signed contract as the NFL Draft is set to launch Saturday.

The Lions have repeatedly said that they want the contract completed before they make the pick. However, there is still time to wrap up the details between now and the start of the draft Saturday afternoon.

“We’ve had some good talks, some good visits and sessions, and I would feel very comfortable there and believe I could become a part of growing something special,” Stafford said Friday. “I wouldn’t feel lost there at all.”

Draft does not start till 4pm EST tomorrow. If everyone agrees to the contract in principal, they could easily get him signed before they make the announcement at the draft.
