Aaron Curry speculation

Florio linked to an article in Buffalo speculating about what the Bills may do if Aaron Curry slips down to them at #11. The universal perception of Curry is that his best position is a 4-3 OLB on the strong side, though he's good enough to play anywhere. Teams like KC (#3) and Cleveland (#5) that need LBs run the 3-4, so they may not want to use a high pick for a guy not playing his optimal position.

Admittedly, it's a long-shot that Curry is still on the board at 11, but, if it does happen: should we trade up with Buffalo to snag him? The 11 pick is 1250 on the chart. Our first (1050) and third (205) gives equivalent value, if you go by the chart.

As much as I'd hate to give up a third-rounder, this guy is perfect for us: fits an acknowledged need and would be supreme value outside the top 10.

Curry, J.Smith, and Monroe are the only three guys in my opinoin who are 100% locks for the top ten so I think this has a zero percent chance of happening.

But to answer your question...yes. I would trade up to #11 to snag him.

As great as Curry is projected to be, I would not trade a 3rd for him. IMO Raji is the only trade up and I was willing to offer a 4. I do not expect that to be taken. I just see us trading down and getting a solid player. 2nd, third and mid 4th rounds offer some tantalyzing players. I will be stunned if Curry drops out of top 10.

In any event, here's the article.

And, then here's another question, if Curry slips past #6, do we offer Oakland our first and second picks? That would be a pure 1500 for 1500 swap. Closer call, in my mind: we've had only one second round pick since 2003, so I can't stand the thought of losing another one. And the rookie contract would be pretty onerous. But if OLB is indeed a spot where we can make an upgrade with a guy like Matthews, why not go get the very best one?

No way Curry makes it out of the top 5 and if he does, look for a smart team like the Patriots to come running in and sweep him up before the rest of the league knows what hit them.

LOl! YOu are sooooo correctamundo here Seminole. BB will be all over Curry like flies on ****.

If the Pats traded up for him, I think I would die a little bit. Then they would get Barwin in the 2nd and Levitre in the 3rd. All players I like in those rounds.

If he's there at 11, I'm on the phone. Too much of an upgrade not to move up and nab him.

Totally agreed. Curry will be a franchise LB for years and years. If you have a shot at getting a guy like an Urlacher, Harrison, Brooks, Suggs, or Mayo type of LB then you've got to do it. Those types of LB"s do to much for your defense.

Yep. You know how this team will rip your heart out though. It'll be a flash back like when Willis and Okoye were both there and we passed P-Will, Curry will fall and we'll take Matthews or Peria instead.

I wouldn't be surprised by any of that Bull. Man, I hated how we passed on Willis. The guy had even better of a rookie season than Demeco did. He'll be a beast for years and years. Curry is in his same type of mold as a LB.

My buddy and I were all over Willis for 3 months leading up to the draft, and now we have a memorial service yearly before the draft at what could have been. Very sad.

As much as I agree that another year of not having a 2nd would stink I would make that deal. We have a three and two fours to grab some quality guys and Curry could make an entire draft a success instantly.

Nah, we can't go another season without a 2nd round pick in my opinion. Curry wouldn't make us SB bound, so I wouldn't want us to do that. We need that 2nd rounder man. I'd have no problem giving up a 3rd to do it though, or maybe both 4th's.

Hmm. I sincerely doubt Curry falls to #11. However, in the unlikely event he does, I would be willing to give up our 3rd rounder to trade up for him. He's an everydown LB that wouldn't leave the field. He and Demeco would be an outstanding duo. He's one of the few players that would make our front 7 and back 7 better at the same time.

I agree he wouldn't make us SB bound but with him and the other additions we have made this offseason I think our defense could at least be middle of the pack from the get go. That might be enough for us to sneak into the playoffs. Plus you get to pencil him in at LB for the next decade and not really worry about it. Now if we could do it for a three or two fours I would be ecstatic but I have a hard time believing a team would pass him up for that or not be able to find a better deal from another team. In any case this is probably all just a pipe-dream.

Good post, and like you i don't think we could pull it off for a 3rd and or two 4th's either. Someone else would out bid us there.

He might be worth giving up a 2nd rounder for, but man after not having them for the last two seasons, I want to keep our 2nd rounder this year and provide more depth at a lot of positions. We could still get a great player in the 2nd round as well as the 1st round. We're just not a good enough team yet to where we can be trading up in the draft and give up our 2nd rounder again. Maybe next year we'll be in a position to do something like that.

Personally I really like Mealuage as well and would love for us to draft him and move Demeco over but that would be a pipe dream as well that won't happen. Neither of these scenarios are likely to happen like you say.

Its really hard sometimes not to pile on Casserly, I was going to just let this go but since someone posted a thread about this I have to respond.

For those who haven't watched Path to the Draft or do not subscribe to NFL Network just last Friday Casserly did his Top 10 Mock draft & he had Curry slipping down to #10 (San Francisco) for similar reasons (same sources)? now just yesterday he switches gears & says he thinks that Detroit has a deal with Curry to go #1 if a contract cannot be hammered out with Matthew Stafford. Which is it? if Curry is worth the #1 overall selection how do you have him sliding to #10 can't have it both ways, maybe he is bi-polar

Because the rumor of the day keeps Casserly's name out there. Just like the nincapoop web site that announced all those players had failed tests. Bad PR is better than no PR I guess.

It's possible that the other teams might have different needs.
Let's say the Lions and the Seahawks decided to take the two QBs.

No question I'd give up the 3rd to move up to get him. I feel much more confident about him than Matthews, Cushing, etc. (who we might take at 15), and it's easily worth the 3rd to get that much more confidence. I don't think he'll slip far enough that a 3rd would be enough, though.

On the other hand, our 2nd round pick looks pretty valuable to me. From what I've seen of mock drafts and ratings, it looks like lots of players that could be good matches for us should be going in the 1st half of the second round. (In fact, I wish we were picking a bit higher in the 2nd, as I'm worried that a lot of those will be taken before our pick, and we might miss out.) Giving up the 2nd rounder means we're likely giving up another strong contributor (as opposed to the 3rd round pick, which is more likely to be developmental or have less of an impact).

I agree!

This is really getting fascinating now. Evidently, Team Curry has heard the speculation about him falling and is trying like heck to prevent it:

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/22/wake-forests-curry-willing-to-take-less-money-to-go-no-1/

They're telling all the world they'll take less than Jake Long did last year. Why would Curry do that? Because if he does fall to, say, #10, his guaranteed money drops from around $30 million (if he will indeed sign below Jake Long) to about $13 million. That's quite a hit to take.

This is why I cannot fathom why a team with the top pick waits until after the pick is made to sign the player. Once the Commissioner reads the name, the auction is over and the team loses nearly all of its leverage. But, right now, the Lions can set Curry against Monroe against Jason Smith against Matt Stafford. Looks like Curry is blinking just a little bit.

Beerlover, while I'm certainly not above a good Casserly-bash myself, I don't think he's being self-contradictory in thinking Curry could go one or fall to ten. Ask Aaron Rogers and Brady Quinn how far a guy in the running for #1 can fall. Curry is clearly hearing those footsteps and is trying to get the word out that he's willing to play ball on the money.

The difference between Quinn or Rodgers and Curry is that no team needs more than 1 franchise QB, while most teams have at least 3, sometimes 4 starting linebackers. No team in the NFL is so set at linebacker that it would turn down the chance to have a potential pro-bowler

Curry is also the consensus #1 player at his position. Rodgers and Quinn were not. That makes Curry valuable to all teams, not just those in need of a LB.

If he's not worried about dropping, why in the world would Curry (or his people) be talking publicly about taking less money? Curry has just publicly set his ceiling, which is something he should never do--unless he's worried about a long stay in the green room on Saturday and wants to grab Detroit's attention.

Here's some reasons a team may pass up on a Pro Bowl LB: they need every single position (Detroit), they have no OTs (St. Louis, Cincy), they are converting to a 3-4 and thus have the wrong kind of d-linemen (KC, Green Bay), they have a relatively solid core of LBs but are weak most everywhere else (Oakland), they need a proven pass-rusher (Cleveland--the only issue with Curry is that he didn't blitz much at Wake), Shaun Hill is their QB (SF), they either ran clean out of WRs (Seattle) or their only decent WR just got busted, again, for nose-candy (Jacksonville).

I agree with everyone else that Curry falling is an unlikely scenario--his chances of going #1 are better than his chances of lingering past #7. But if the unlikely does occur, I hope our war-room is ready to make a move.

It could happen. this week you don't know what is smoke and what is not. Heck the ones driving Sanchez up the Board just maybe Seattle hoping to force some interest in their pick at four. Curry could fall because there is no evidence that he can develop into a pass rusher out of a 3-4. and no one wants to over pay for a mediocre LB without a pass rush. Crabtree might fall because of the forty time and Cleveland...Jacksonville might go in another direction. and Big Al loves the clock guys over the producers. Orakpo could fall because of the questions on whether he can cover and his injury history. I agree. If Curry falls past Green bay we should be on the phone for a move up. If they weren't so stubborn about moving Mario....Orakpo too. Might be San Fran loves Oher....and they'd do it cheap.

Because, even with a low money ceiling, he'll make more money 1st overall than 3rd overall.

Um, any chance we have at this guy needs to be taken. I'd go 1st/2nd for him without hesitation. Beast. For anyone with doubts, I got three names for you:

Curry Ryans Adibi

bitches. Behind Mario, Smith and whatever's left of Okoye...with Dunta and co. behind him with another safety pick to go with E-Willie. Damnit ya'll, that's a no brainer from where I sit.
