Why would you boo? They announced it the night before. I got all my frustration out on that day.
I, just like most people, wanted Reggie.... and I was wrong. I will happily point that out. I have never been more willing to admit my mistake when it comes to the '06 draft.
I was very happy with the D-Ryans pick. I happen to watch Alabama play alot that year and he and their defense was special. He also almost singlehandedly beat Texas Tech in their bowl game.
My list, without regard to draft positional value, was Ferguson, Mario, Hawk, a QB (Cutler/VY), anyone else in the draft, undrafted free agents, then maybe Reggie Bush.

We really got a diamond out of Mario.
*edit*
I also like to point out how happy I was that we didn't take Vince. Thank God.
I just dont understand how everybody in the country got sucked up into all the Reggie Bush hype.
I'm in the same boat. I watch Bama a lot & I couldnt believe that Ryans fell through the 1st round.
Yep, I was there and NO I didn't boo the pick (and was ashamed at those who did).Did you boo the pick?
Be honest now.
No, I did not boo the pick. I didn't want either RB or VY, but, I was a little disappointed we didn't target D'B Fergerson. BUT, I felt the power's that be SHOULD know what they were doing, and it looks like they did. When I saw the size of Mario when he stood on that stage, I thought, WOW that is one big SOLID dude!

I'll be honest that I thought Reggie Bush would've been more logical (Given Kubiak's background), but we needed a pass-rusher, plain-and-simple.
1. He's more of a stud that the guy drafted before him.
2. Most elite college guys get free cars, hookers, and drugs
3. There is a trophy that he won, forgot the name.
4. See 1-3
So far out of the 3 you have to say Mario is the best guy. However both QBs and DEs take a good while to really develop so the jury is still out on Mario and VY. However most great backs produce and show signs from their rookie season on (Earl Campbell, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, etc). Bush hasn't even show a flash of anything so I am pretty comfortable in thinking I was right about him.

I was living in Chicago at the time and was at a buddies place with a bunch of people watching the draft. As the Houston pick was announced I stood up. As Mario's name was read, I cheered wildly. I am a big supporter of building a strong Defense and you can imagine how I was when I saw Demeco was not taken 32 in the first round and how loud I became when we picked him.
That said, I was in the trade down group. At the time I had serious reservations about Bush, wanted Young(but knew we would not extend Carr and take Young) and felt that D-Brick might be a good pick but didnt want to take him first.
I would have been fine dropping down to 6 or 7 and taking Micahel Huff as a FS, taking Demeco in the 2nd, plus getting an extra second and third. I would have taken Marcus McNeill(LT) in the 2nd with my extra second, then taken Leonard Pope(TE) with my first 3rd, Eric Winston with my second third, and the Jerious Norwood with my 3rd third.
But as it is, Mario, Meco, Winston, and Spencer is still a pretty good first day haul.
No booing here, like disaacks3...was somewhat torqued at those who did, IIRC.
Wouldn't it be great to bring back that time period and re visit those lovely threads....

Most of the people I spoke to were happy about the pick, and I had one person tell me that he saw camera guys looking for the most vocal critics to put on camera but didn't want to record people supporting the pick.
This summer, the Texans held an All Access event that allowed fans to tour the stadium and get autographs. Gary Kubiak spoke to the crowd after the even and introduced some of the players. Mario Williams got the loudest cheers, and people chanting his name. You will not read anything about that in national publications because it doesn't fit the thesis of most sportswriters' articles.
