I had a conversation yesterday about the "first down" call by the announcer at the games, and I am predicting that it will not happen under Bill O'Brien.

I am 100% certain that O'Brien will disagree with the announcer making that call while his offense is working, but it remains to be seen if the Texans marketing team will defer to the Texans football team.


Thoughts? I really hope they kill it, personally.
 
Always thought it was silly and contrived. Getting a first down in the NFL these days is not a big deal.
 
Good... only time you need to be celebrating something offensively is when touchdowns are being scored and game winning field goals. Time to start thinking bigger and better. Oh shucks attitude can destroyed and buried in the dirt.
 
It doesn't really bother me. I kind of like that it keeps some of the fans involved in the progress of a drive.

Kill it, keep it...doesn't matter to me...
 
My friends in Austin who root for other teams think the cheer is lame, which is precisely why I yell it as loud as I can at them in the bar.
 
I could be mistaken, but I recall hearing the Patriots announcers doing the same thing.

So.

You can probably expect it to continue.
 
My Buddy Tom who hangs with me hanging with the Blue Crew when he wins the drawing for tickets that week, HATES IT! Which is why pull a Brisco County and scream as loud as I can and of course gotta finish with the arm swing & point "first down signal". :D

Yeah, he hates it...
 
I remember that particularly goofy feeling when the announcer would do it in the 4th quarter of blowout games that the Texans were losing.

Especially during that first 2-14 season and there were only 5,000 fans in the stadium.

It had a very corporate checklist vibe about it, like no matter how the game is actually going, this is what we do when the team gets a first down.

That said, it is so ingrained into many of us that we even do it at home while watching the games. Even my little girl does it, and she's never been to a game.

I think O'Brien might have a bit more pull here than in NE. If he has his way, I'm sure it will be gone. The question is, will they give him his way?
 
I could certainly do without it. I've gotten pretty good at ignoring it over the years though so no big deal either way.

The KC Chiefs stadium announcer does it too, and I'm pretty sure it continued during the Romeo Crennel days. According to my brother (Chiefs season ticket holder, and frequent attendee at Kansas State games), the Chiefs stole it from the Wildcats. While I'm sure that's true, I'm thinking the Wildcats stole it from someone else first.
 
I hate it as much as I hate the dumb Clay Walker song.

I bet O Brien will hate it as well, but I doubt if it goes anywhere. O Brien could probably overrule marketing if he wanted, but I don't see this as being something he'd worry about.
 
We should go totally shameless and create a cheer for false starts by the opposing team. The stadium could play Start Me Up by the Stones. That would be hilariously lame.
 
went to a Titans game and I think they were doing it has well


I agree tho we should kill it hell this team needs all the help it can get IMO so yeah

doesnot matter tho on the road were the games really count its going to be loud has hell for the Texans
 
The only way that will end is if the fans ignore the announcers and refuse to participate when they say it.
 
They do this at A&M games, with slightly different wording: "____ yard gain for a Fightin' Texas Aggie First Down!"

College FB is a different world though.

He runs an offensive system that includes a lot of no huddle, with the QB making calls at the line on every play. How could it not bother him to have 70,000 home fans screaming while they're trying to run plays?
It football 101. Fans should be quite when the offense is operating.

Agreed and that should be a given. Does the crowd actually get that loud when the announcer does the First Down thing?

It's like the two of you are watching a different game than I am.
It helps the offense when the crowd is quiet. It hinders the offense when the crowd is loud.
Why in gods name do fans on the road make noise when our offense has the ball? I guess they should stop that nonsense. It clearly doesn't make any difference... /sarcasm

BTW, the intention of the original post wasn't to debate the merits of the First Down call, it was to discuss whether O'Brien would want the call stopped, and whether he has the authority to do so, if he wants it stopped.

Yeah, I don't get the dismissive attitude when the Texans have clearly tried to educate fans about being quiet when the offense is on the field.

I'm sure you remember when the pep band was wandering around the stadium and would randomly pop up in various sections and start playing. Quite a few times they'd show up in Gridiron, Tx., and start a song, completely oblivious to what was happening on the field.

It only happened for two games before it was quickly shut down. Between fans bringing it to the attention of the front office and players making statements on the radio, it was very obvious that lots of noise directly impacted the offense.

There is a reason why "home-field advantage" includes having the crowd on your side. At one time, the Texans were keeping running stats all season about how many false starts, timeouts, and snap mistakes were being made by opponents due to crowd noise at Reliant. The NFL eventually put a stop to the statistical thing, but it was cool while it lasted.
