Texans Training Camp 2015

The season is 16 games and Mallett will kick the cat today but will be back ready to step up when called. I like Mallett and he was my dog in the hunt so now i'm buying into Hoyer. I'm an optimist and expect very good play from him putting us at 10-6. The defense win 6 of those games.

Any other year, they would refuse to comment further until the story died. Can't do that with HK around, so we'll see.

But if Mallett can't sleep because he's upset, I'd be reluctant to pass judgement so quickly. He's 27, and he's running out of time. He was a child phenom quarterback with a football coach father, so there's a lifetime of expectations riding him. Those expectations really mess with your head if you grow to 6'7", study under Tom Brady, and then lose one opportunity to injury. Then, if you have all those expectations and missed opportunities rattling around in your head while you get beat by someone who you feel is less talented, that's some heavy **** to deal with. And the world is watching you. At the very least you'll lose some sleep.

Yeah, plenty of other quarterbacks just deal with it, so it's easy to say "Act professional." But Mallet has some child phenom baggage and football coach father issues complicating it, and that would mess with your head no matter how strong you think you are.

There have been comments re. Wilfork's supposed luke warm remarks towards Nix as opposed to glowing remarks about Covington. As I look at the very much different questions he fielded about the two, context makes it clearer to me that there was no demeaning of Nix's attitude, effort or performance.


(on what he’s seen from rookie DT Christian Covington) “He’s a hard, hard worker. I mean he’s coachable. He has so much passion for the game. It’s tough to be a nose tackle and to ask to do some certain things. Sometimes they look at how I play a play and they really can’t play a play like I play, just the size difference and strength difference, but at the same time, he has some quickness that I don’t have. I think we have to do a real good job of using the tools that we have and what we don’t have try to learn how to use them, and try to get better using them. Our skill sets are a little different but at the same time we both – the one thing that I always like in a player is the passion that you have for the game, and he’s a guy that has so much passion. He works hard, he don’t complain, that’s a good thing. He has some good traits about him that he should be a good professional at this level because of what he’s given to the game. (on his thoughts on NT Louis Nix III and giving him guidance) “Well I don’t try to look at guys and critique guys. That’s not what I do. I just try to pass on a little knowledge and a little wisdom that I have playing the game the way I played it for all these years. Being in a similar system to what we have here, I’m always just giving pointers, and I’m trying to make guys understand the game, not just a certain play. You need to understand the game in general and look at it from a different scope. That’s what I like to do. I don’t just like to look at the center or the guards, I like to look at the whole offense and I like to see the offense break the huddle and see what they’re in. I like to look at the running back and see where his eyes are, I like to look at the receivers. Is it slot, is it pro, is it trips, is it wild wide, I like to see the whole thing and that’s one of the things I try to teach the guys is formation recognition. Just being able to recognize formations, because nine times out of 10, if you can be able to recognize that, the offense will give you what they want to do. So it’s just being a smart football player. If we can do that, we’ll be very successful. That’s one of the goals of mine is trying to get the guys in my room to understand that especially the younger guys that really don’t have much playing time under their belt. Just to understand the whole aspect of the game, not just the guys they’re playing in front of but all 11 on offense. That’s something that I’m going to continue to work on because I think that’ll make us a better defense.”
 
If it's true that Mallet overslept, he's just drawn the wrong kind of attention to himself. Rightly or wrongly, his professionalism, attitude, and maturity is going to come under scrutiny. It's gonna make him look bad at the wrong time.

It will be interesting to see who plays first after Hoyer comes out in the Saints game.

There's more to it than oversleeping. His attitude sucks right now. If he had a great attitude and was working hard I doubt O'Brien would have sent him home.

There's just one problem with that. Whether you get enough sleep or not, you get your ass out of bed when the alarm clock goes off.
 
I don't know if its Hard Knocks being around or Obrien's way combined with how PR conscious the Texans brass has always been, but it seems like this years camp has been one huge soap opera over basically nothing different that any other year. I guess thats why I wasn't even the least bit excited about them being on hard knocks because its basically the same show every year you just change the teams/players name. I might be the only fan with HBO that hasn't wait one second of the show.

Other than missing his alarm and being late to a practice three days after the QB announcement, what has he done to warrant saying his attitude sucks?
 
Dude was a consummate professional last year. Before he was even signed this year he showed up at a Texans PR event at Texas Children's. He signed here for less that he could have with the Jets. He never said one word outside the party line during OTA and TC. He was honest enough about how he felt not getting the starting gig and I have a hell of a lot of respect for his honesty. If he didn't feel that way, I don't want him on my team. Shows up and does his work for two days after the announcement. But shows up late for practice yesterday and he is unprofessional and immature. Whatever.

Guess I have a different definition of "critique" than VW.

It was just an observation on my part, no biggie. If Nix needs VW's approval then he is in the wrong profession. However, if he doesn't pick VWs brain and learn from him, shame on him.

Side note: I really appreciate all the professional information you add to the site concerning player injuries and rehab.

A handful of interceptions, a couple bad games, or possibly even one lousy snap away from the job of his dreams - starting quarterback in the NFL - Mallett showed up late and missed practice Thursday.

He overslept, according to the Chronicle's Texans beat writer, John McClain.

It isn't going out on limb to presume the Texans' backup didn't have a valid excuse for his extended beauty sleep.

If he did, coach Bill O'Brien would have shared it when he made an unscheduled appearance before the media after the workout.

Instead, O'Brien said he would keep details of Mallett's absence between the two of them and that it was "a personal issue."

In other words, Mallett didn't have an acceptable justification: An illness kept him up late at night. An LBJ Day Eve function ran into the wee hours …

Let's not be too hard on the guy. We all make mistakes.

But while this isn't a career-threatening error, it could hurt Mallett tremendously.

Mallett knows how he is perceived by some. He even brought it up last year, saying he is "not as dumb as people believe."

He was talking about football IQ.

"If they think I'm a dumb player, fine," Mallett said. "That's my advantage there."

Well, not when it comes to earning the most important position on the team. Not when you play for a guy like O'Brien.

There is a reason O'Brien so often refers to his players as smart.

He desires that. And ina quarterback, he demands it.

If Mallett comprehended coachspeak, he would have shown up for work an hour early every day this week and early every day until the job was his.

I can assure you that is what O'Brien hoped for.

Mallett must not have understood what O'Brien meant when he told him he had better be ready to play because his chance could come at any moment.

He didn't grasp that Hoyer is on such a short leash that O'Brien made it a point to tell Hoyer and the world he is not on a short leash. O'Brien's nose didn't appear to grow when he said it. Then again, the "Hard Knocks" cameras weren't shooting a close-up at the time.

It is almost impossible for an NFL head coach to be less definitive than O'Brien was in naming Hoyer the starter.

Hoyer had reason to be upset with the manner in which the big news was delivered. O'Brien didn't say anything close to "Hoyer is the man, and we believe in him."

Coachspeak

HBO's editing of the footage might have made this less obvious than it would have been were you in the room, but O'Brien didn't even give Hoyer the satisfaction of telling him he was the starter.

He addressed Mallett and told him he had picked Hoyer. Then he went on to explain why he made that decision and pointed out there was not much of adifference between thetwo.

If Mallett interpreted the coachspeak, he would have heard the job is Hoyer's … for now.

By oversleeping and missing practice Thursday, Mallett wasn't being professional about it.

He wasn't preparing like a starter. He wasn't getting ready to play.

Much more is expected from a guy so close to being the guy.

Maybe that is why he is the guy behind the guy.

I would have rather not heard that our left tackle suffered a hand injury..........especially when Dr. Deepi Sidhu states that "I wouldn't put it in the serious category." The most common "hand injuries" that come to mind...........finger fracture, wrist sprain and wrist tendonitis.

Tom Savage has grown exponentially from '14 to '15.
He's never been allowed to sit, learn & develop. He's in a good situation for 2015.


O'Brien's fiery but he's also intelligent.
Complex offense, most important job after QB in the NFL...backup QB.
Don't force Savage early.

There's a big difference in rewarding & trading. He [Mallet] won't be "rewarded" for yesterday but trade is unlikely, IMO.

You & OB both. I don't really care for the way he's handling the media when Mallett is concerned. Hallett missed yesterday. Of course the media is going to ask about how he's doing.

But OB wants none of it. He starts talking about Hoyer.

I just think it could've been handled better. Six no one asks him about Hoyer, but it is what it is.
