taking a wide receiver in the draft?

prtfly4awhguy2

Practice Squad
Now that the Team has lost both gaffney and bradford(thank god), we are really short on wide receivers. i no we made an attempt at givens, and we have made an offer to walter, but we have to wait on the bengals for that. On our current roster, we only have three receivers that i would say ready to play, Johnson, mathis and armstrong.

Since the amount of free agent wide receivers is dwindling, do you think we would take a receiver earlier in the draft then we woulda before, say somewere in the 3rd or maybe 4th round?

it would really help to have two 2nds, not sure if Moss will still be there @ the top of the 3rd rd. but we need someone who is a polished route runner with break away speed and big play ability to stretch the field, reminds me alot of his brother-

moss was the guy i had in mind. But not sure he will last that long. If he was somehow still there toward the 20's in the 2nd round, would you trade up to get him.

An i agree, this is one of the worst drafts of wr in quite a while.

we should take a receiver in the draft but not with our first 2 picks. its safe to say that reggie is #1, but after that we'll probably get o-lineman. maybe mangold, eric winston, whoever is the best available at that pick is who we should get because as much as we need a #2 receiver, we need o-lineman more.

i agree, but you have to wonder if Kubiak will be anything like shannahan as a coach. correct me if im wrong but didnt shannahan not take many high round olinemen.

I believe Moss is projected to be a mid to late 1st rounder, but then again I just looked at several draft boards and maybe he is not? Would not mind seeing this guy go at #33 (our second rounder.)

Well if the Texans are going to draft Bush, then the Texans need to go D practically the rest of the draft. They probably should use their second 3rd round pick for a WR. I keep hoping they trade the pick, it's what would be best, overall, for the team...JM:twocents:

i really like jovon bouknight, and he will probably be available in day 2, so if i were kubiak or CC i might take a chance with him

This team really needs a #2 receiver. I see us bringing in someone for cheap or drafting someone with a 3rd-5th round selection. This might be one position we just have to realize we cannot resolve sufficiently this season.

OK, what's more important, upgrading what we have at #2 WR or
upgrading TE ? I think we should concentrate on acquiring a TE this year and
try to develope the WRs we have, especially Mathis. And if we do in fact
draft Bush, that will represent a significant increase in our pass receiving corps.

there is always the trade deadline, and maybe there will be a WR on the block, and maybe by that time, babin vs peek DE fight will be done and we will know who is better and let one of them go

Here are my fav WR options via Draft:

Greg Jennings WMich. 5'11 195 4.52

-Possible 4th or 5th rounder

Strengths: He has dominated his level of play as a go-to-receiver and punt return specialist. He is quicker than fast. Has adequate-to-good speed. Shows a little bit of a second gear when he hits daylight. He shows excellent body control, balance and COD skills. Is a sharp route runner who gets in and out of his breaks very quickly. Knows how to separate and also has a very good feel for finding soft spots in zone. He's a threat after the catch. Shows some wiggle in space and will make defenders miss. Also has very good vision as a runner and will make the right cut at the right time.

Hank Baskett UNM 6'3 219 4.59

-Possible late 2nd or 3rd rounder

Strengths: Is a big, physical WR prospect. Has good size and impressively built. Is aggressive and knows how to use his body to his advantage. Will overpower smaller DB's at the LOS when working vs. press coverage. He is a huge target and will shields defenders on intermediate routes. Possesses outstanding leaping ability and is a huge mismatch on jump balls. Has great potential as a matchup problem in the red zone in the NFL. He is aggressive and strong in traffic. His hands are big and soft. Shows the ability to pluck on the run and make the tough catch in traffic. Will make the acrobatic catch and keep his feet in along the sideline. He runs hard after the catch and will break some tackles. Has great size, toughness, technique and strength as a run blocker. Is competitive and tough. Coaches rave about his intangibles, especially his leadership, character and work ethic.

Todd Watkins BYU 6'2 185 4.4

- 3rd or 4th rounder

Strengths: A tall receiver with blazing speed. A true vertical threat with good height, arm length and leaping ability. He has the initial burst and top-end speed to simply run by defenders in man-coverage. Shows a second gear when tracking down the deep ball. Will win many jump balls and is a huge weapon in the red zone. Has big hands and does a good job of catching over his head. Shows very good body control and awareness along the sideline. He isn't overly elusive but he is still a threat after the catch because of his ability to run away from defenders. If he finds a crease or gets an angle in the open field, he's gone.

The key will be finding that solid WR that is under other teams radar. I hope Kubiak can find that WR.

I don't know....between him, Brad Smith and Michael Robinson, I'd rather take Brad Smith as a prospect in the late rounds.

I think the Texans don't need another rookie WR that have to learn his way through, but I'll tell you who they need and would be a great addition to the Texans offense, Keyshawn Johnson. As ya'll heard by now, the Cowboys wavied Keyshawn Wednesday for the bonus money they suppose to offer him. Have Keyshawn & Andre?! The Johnson & Johnson duo.

If we're going to draft a WR, which I don't think we will, I like Jonathan Orr out of Wisconsinon. He's big, and has good speed, and I'm willing ot bet he can block.

Wow, and you think Keyshawn will keep his mouth shut? He is right there with TO, without the talent!

The Texans need to build the WR corps through the draft, FA sucks!! Plus Kubiak can bring in a guy that fits his offense.

There really aren't any WRs worthy of a 1st rd selection, but the 3rd - 4th rd talent value is definately there! THat is where most of the WRs will be drafted in 06.

i dont know about that... i think you guys mean that theres not many 1st round-elite wrs..but there are alot of later round guys that are big and fast and may be good sleepers. id take somebody like nance, avant, marshall etc in the 3rd or 4th

didnt read the whole thread... but what we need is a good TE now. We COULD trade down, get some extra picks.. grab Vernon Davis.. and go from there.

We really need to re-sign Wells if we do that.

i see what you mean- i love VD aswell but we're going to take bush id say so i think we should take a decent te in the 3rd. im not a big fan of jeb putzier, especially if he wants a fair bit of money

Why does no one ever talk abour Mike Hass?

He was the best receiver in the country this year and has been one of the best since his first start of his sophomore year

Surely there must be some demons in his closet that we do not know about.

Perhaps he punched out a Viking scout at the combine? Oh wait...

There are a few wideouts i think we could get in the later rounds, that might prove to be a steal. Demarius Bilbo 6-3 220 from Georgia Tech, is a former quarterback who has a lot of upside and extremly athletic. Another i have my eye on is Mike Haas 6-1 209 from Oregon State. He is not the fastest reciever, but he is a classic over achiever. Will go across the middle, catch the ball in traffic and has great hands.

Moss is a nice prospect, but he won't last until #65, he might even make a puch for the end of the 1st round, but he will probably go early to mid 2nd. While Moss would be nice, I think it would be better to go for a bigger possession WR, as Andre is quite fast, we have another speedster in Jerome Mathis, and assuming we add Reggie Bush that gives us another speedster out wide when we put him out there. There are several bigger WRs out there that have some speed and athleticism to them and would be available in the 3rd-4th rounds:

Devin Aromashodu, Auburn - 6' 2.5", 200 lbs. - ran in the low 4.4 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, possibly in the 4th.
Hank Baskett, New Mexico - 6' 2.75", 225 lbs. - ran in the low 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, likely in the 4th.
Marques Colston, Hofstra - 6' 4.5", 225 lbs. - ran in the mid 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, likely in the 4th or later.
Chris Hannon, Tennessee - 6' 3.25", 205 lbs. - ran in the upper 4.4, low 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, likely in the 4th or later.
Brandon Marshall, Central Florida - 6' 4.5", 230 lbs. - ran in the upper 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, probably in the 4th.
Anthony Mix, Auburn - 6' 4.25", 235 lbs. - ran in the low 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, maybe in the 4th.
Martin Nance, Miami OH - 6' 4.25", 215 lbs. - ran in the upper 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, probably in the 4th.
Maurice Stovall, Notre Dame - 6' 4.25", 215 lbs. - ran in the mid to upper 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 2nd round, likely in the 3rd.
Todd Watkins, BYU - 6' 2.25", 200 lbs. - ran in the mid 4.4 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, probably in the 4th or lower.
Jeff Webb, San Diego St. - 6' 2", 210 lbs. - ran in the low to mid 4.4 range at the combine. Easily available in the 3rd round, likely in the 4th or lower.
Travis Wilson, Oklahoma - 6' 2", 215 lbs. - ran in the low 4.5 range at the combine. Easily available in the 2nd round, likely the 3rd and maybe the 4th.

I personally like Brandon Marshall a lot, he's not real fast but he reminds me a lot of Stovall and I think he runs routes a little more smoothly and has just as good of hands, and he'll be available later in the draft. Nance and Mix would be decent options, I like Colston as a later round sleeper pick as well, I think he could be a good addition. Hannon, Watkins, and Webb are decent picks late in the draft (5th round or later if they last) and Aromashodu and Baskett would be ok but will go higher in the draft. Travis Wilson reminds me a lot of a bigger and probably slightly more athletic Jabar Gaffney.

I don't think Bilbo was quite that big and I think he ran in the low 4.7 range at the combine, so not real athletic for a WR. Hass is ok, but he's also not especially fast and not real big so I don't know about him as a #2 WR.

if we are going to draft a reciver, i think we will need to draft a tall physical one. How about MAURICE STOVALL out of Notre Dame. He's the size of Andre Johnson and maybe a little faster than Gaffney. He would be good in the red zone and for the high jump balls.

Hagan has decent size and speed and runs routes ok, but after seeing a little of him this season and his Senior Bowl practices and games, his hands (and his whole game for the most part) remind me a lot of Corey Bradford (probably a little better, but similar) and it would make me nervous to have another guy with such inconsistent hands as our #2 WR.

fair enough....i only remember watching arizona state in a couple of random games and thinking...man, that guy is a beast. I'll defer to someone who has watched more tape

I have seen some, he looks like a nice athlete as well, not sure on his WR skills. He will also likely be around in the 4th round, so there are a lot of options available to us.

the Texans need to upgrade the WR position, seems like they are very active in free agency but these guys are all high paid cap busters. so givens the fact, pun intended, the Texans could decide to draft an impact wideout with the 2nd rd. pick. this is from NFL.com Pro Workout day- "Sinorice Moss WR Moss worked out in position drills and he looked very good. He had a 42-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-3 long jump".

he would be ideal in the slot for the Texans used in combination with Bush it would be a high flying balanced attack both underneath and over the top. For this to happen the Texans would need to address the OL via FA & so far no deals have been done

The Texans could look at WR pretty high in the draft, but I maintain my previous statement that if they are going to get more WRs, they need to get bigger, possession WRs like the list I put up on here rather than getting another small, fast guy. AJ, Mathis, and Bush are enough speed, we need a big, reliable target out there as well. According to reports, Nate Burleson is supposed to be visiting the Texans next week, so they could make him an offer too, but I believe he is a restricted free agent and we'd have to give up a 3rd round pick for him, so I'm not sure I like having to sign him to a big contract and offering up the #65 or 66 pick as well, but we do need more of a WR solution than Walters, I doubt the Bengals match whatever offer we made him and if they were going to I'd think it would have happened by now, so it looks like we're sending our 7th round pick to the Bengals and getting Walters. As I said, hopefully this isn't their solution to our hole at WR, but then again we've seen the likes of Victor Riley as our solution on the OL, etc. before, so hopefully they still plan to get more quality WRs somehow.

Watched this kid here at Sun Devil Stadium against ASU. Great possession receiver who always finds a way to get open. Not considered to have great speed after his 4.6 forty at the combine. I think some scouts miss the boat on prospects who don't have ideal speed. Does anyone remember what Jerry Rice ran coming out of college? A 4.6.......

HUGE1

I'm as big of Mike Hass fan as anyone, the kid can play and will make it for some team in the NFL in the mold of a Steve Largent. that being said his best fit will be on a team already established, Seattle for instance has a history of drafting NW players they have a familarity with.

MorKnolle

seems we keep dancing around the same picks, so many variables who really knows at this stage in the game. even determining bpa with the Texans 2nd pick the drama is thickening. I guess it all depends on free agency and how well the Texans are able to plug in the remaining holes. MLB, Center & WR should be the focus.:twocents:
