Takeaways from the Colts Game

My takeaways, they don’t allow a 100 yard rusher since the ‘17 season and have now done it in back to back games. Other than that, I want to give the defense their props, but Brissett was bad in this game. Some of those underneath routes to the RB could have been huge gains if he places the ball better. T.Y. was a non-factor though so here's that. And Pascal, who torched us for 106 and 2 TD in the 1st game, was shut out last night.

The o-line giving up the pressure they did on 4 man rushes is concerning. I think someone mentioned it but Howard looks to be regressing. Tunsil has really just been so-so, and they're not getting much done in the run game.

Speaking of which, is really putting the brakes on this offense. When you're constantly behind schedule with long down and distance, it's hard to be consistent on offense. Fuller with 140 yards, Nuk with 98 and 2 TD, and you only score 20?

I know Hyde finally broke one that will make his stats look decent, but he had 8 carries for 14 yards (1.7 YPC) prior to that run which came at the start of the 4th quarter. You've got to have better production than that, for that much of the game.

The Colts just didn't look all that good and I can't decide if they were just that bad (which Brissett was), or it was because of what the Texans were doing.

Just glad to see F5 on the field and hope like hell he can stay there for a while. His last TWO home games, 21 catches, 357 yards, 3 TD. Need that dude playing.

I really wanna watch the Watson fumble / timeout play again. It took a while for that scrum to clear out and I'm wondering if/how much that confusion actually ate into the play clock. Maybe it was the heat of the moment, but it SEEMED like they did line up fast to snap the ball.

How many cameras do they use per game? Whatever that number, it's more in a primetime game. I dont believe for a second anyone on his staff had a chance to look at them all between the end of the play and when he called the timeout. There's no chance imo someone gave him an "all clear."

Even if we didn't have the best play ready at that point you have to keep the clock moving and MAINTAIN POSSESION. OB risked that by calling the time out. His situational awareness is just not good and after this long I don't believe it will get much better. Oddly, if you read through the game thread you'll read a half dozen "wtf's?" Instantly when he called the TO. We knew what he jeopardized even if he didnt.

It was a jv move and a miserable call. We got lucky.

I think Crennel had a great game plan. He doesn't have the talent on that side anymore but he exposed brissett

He did play more zone. A lot of our guys are better at man coverage so it was kinda a surprise. The colts use a lot of bumps and rubs in their pass plays though. That works against man coverage but not zone coverage. It proved to be a good move by romeo.

I'm encouraged by the new talent in our secondary.

If the Colts make the playoffs. Buffalo AND the Raiders are ahead of them now. I'm thinking Buffalo gets knocked out, its schedule is brutal. The Colts might sneak in the 6 seed but the Steelers may make it over them, they hold the tiebreaker.

Yeah , they won - Great.

I just didn't see the urgency I needed to see from a team fighting for its playoff lives.

I saw the same old offense ….

So they won and if they take care of business the rest of the way should be the 3 seed - a home playoff game against a team they should beat.

Then What ?

I don't even have the expectation that they will beat that first playoff opponent.
They should …. but I don't expect it. Not with OB at the helm.

It's hard to say, good freaking question.

The 2018 defense had both Clowney and Watt but the secondary was terrible. The offense without Fuller and then Thomas went down. Weak schedule


2019 the defense we're without Watt traded away Clowney. As you can see the pass rush is pretty much absolute. The secondary, even those is patched up is much better. The offense with a healthy Fuller and the addition of Hyde, Stills Fells, and Duke can be really explosive.
Tough schedule

Ummm but we still have Bill O'Brien as the HC/OC. His team just doesn't seem ready for the playoffs. So I will say neither year seems legit.

This is not a shot on you Texansballer74, but a shot on the tv hosts. I 100% agree with there assessment on OB‘s coachingand our offense, BUT F this BS about the Colts being at a disadvantage due to injuries. Was Brissett hobbled by a MCL? Yep, but so was our starting RT. Was T.Y. back off a strained muscle? Yep, and so was Fuller. The difference Fuller played well, TY did not. Were they missing Mack? Yep, and we played with out JJ Watt. Plus, we played without Reid, Roby, and Johnson. Let’s also not forget we lost Miller for the season before it even started. How good would our RB rotation be with Miller, Hyde and Johnson? I get sick and tired of people giving other teams excuses for injuries while ignoring our injured players.

They gave up 28 passing TD last year, have already given up 22 this year. 15 INT last year, 5 so far this year. 101 passer rating this year, 92.7 last year. 64.8% completion percentage last year, 66% this year.

They gave up 5 300+ yard passing games last year, already 5 this year. They gave up just 3 3+ TD games last year, already 5 this year.

Not seeing how that's much better.

Since they added Conley/Hargreaves I think they have a chance to be better come playoff time than they were last yr at playoff time. The lack of pass rush is worrisome.

I'm just saying with all the injuries and having to bring in players almost every week. This secondary has held it's own.

No. & I don't understand how some see criticism of that TO as BO'b hate. Sure, I hate BO'b (not as much as I used to) but that was an objectively stupid decision & the play he came out of the TO with makes it asinine. It was probably the same play (even with a different formation) & it was executed poorly.

Had the team manned up & converted on that play, I'd give him a pass on the stupid TO. As it stands the TO served no purpose but to give the refs additional time to consider reviewing the fumble.

I can't imagine anyone being more objective about the situation than Chris Canty. He has no skin in the game & his thoughts reflect mine to a tee. I hate BO'b, but the criticism of the TO is warranted.

I'm disappointed in the lack of progress between the first game against the Colts & this one. Again, we see Bill O'brien's inability to know & exploit his opponent.

I understand lack of continuity on the defensive side of the ball. But why did we run so much three TEs?

How hard is it to incorporate a third WR into a potent passing attack? Will Fuller came back with a bang, but why does Stills dissapear?

I can see DCs struggling with the thought of Hopkins, Fuller, Stills & the possibility of Duke out of the backfield & a TE here or there... then sigh in relief when they remember Bill O'Brien

There's a difference in evaluation of his strengths/weaknesses/play in general and whether people think you can win a SB with him at qb. Or just complaining about the offense in general. Example: I'm still not pleased the OL play. Is that complaining or evaluating in your opinion?

Well if that's the case, then you should be doing the same type of evaluation with Obrien. Its year six and we're seeing the same exact stuff from his play calling to simply knowing the basic knowledge of situational football.

I give him a pass for the RS yrs and knew that it would take 3 yrs to recover from the RS ineptness. So they're in yr 2 on my clock. But I will say early results don't look promising.

We have an exciting young QB and a boring, unimaginative play caller.
Just seems to me we are not capitalising on our best asset.
What makes the whole thing even more frustrating is that we waited for so long for a guy just like Watson.

We have a young QB that is making mistakes against quality defenses and a HC that's trying to limit those mistakes. I wish BOB would fully open up the offense too. But that probably means missing the playoffs while the young QB learns. You OK with that?

Let him take his bumps and learn from his mistakes - even experienced QBs make mistakes against quality defenses and besides, how else do they learn?
I'd be most interested to know your solution to obtaining a quality, experienced QB who does not make mistakes if you want a better option than Watson.
 
We will never get away from this back and forth because some bloggers just have to drive home their narrative.

So let's us all agree that that blogger is right. Bill O'Brien is calling a mistake free game plan and Watson is the only one making mistakes.
