How bad is it?

It'll get worse before it gets better. One of the most alarming issues I see is that the Texans entire secondary is going downhill fast. K Jackson and Joseph are no spring chickens and K. Johnson is proving to be a liability because he's always coming back from an injury. Their safeties are awful. Tack on the lack of pass rushers and the defense is an unmitigated disaster.

The Rams are going to expose just had bad the Texans really are. I expect Goff is going to throw deep often, especially early.

Another example of Rick Smith having no vision. Joseph isn't going to be here forever and you have to plan on life after JJo. How does RS do that? He lets Bouye get away for a comp pick.

I mean, props to RS for finding guys like Bouye for nothing, but what's the point if you develop them and let them go be solid players for someone else?

With Bouye the Texans were 2nd in pass defense last year. This year they are 20th. It's not hard to figure out Smith's f-up. He held onto cap space with no plan on what to do with it. And FA for CB's next year is slim pickings. Same as offensive line help.

He'll give Clowney a big contract next offseason even though his knee is a ticking time bomb. It's going to happen. And Clowney will quit working until his knee gives out.

B .. bu ... But everyone said 'overpaying' for Buoye was a mistake, and our defense was so good, and Kevin Johnson ... And ... And ... And.

Kareem Jackson is significantly ahead of last season (14 games to 8 this year) statistically. Agree with you on Johnson but want to see more of him before culling him. I also think safeties struggling due to Mercilus and Cushing out and Cunningham rookie year. Joseph needs an extension despite his age.

That’s what you get when you go after some “assistant GM” from the Colts. Exactly when we’re the Colts ever known for having a shutdown defense? Brian Gaines went to Buffalo, didn’t he? Well, would you look at that...Buffalo all of a sudden looks better, while we’re falling fast and hard.

Not wishing anything bad, but these next few seasons will probably kill McNair or cut his life a couple years shorter. Thanks Rick Smith.

Unless he's gradually reached that point where Cam and RS can give him a can of Play-Do and a bowl of Sphagetti-O's to keep him entertained on game day. It's obvious that he's not seeing what everyone else is seeing...so he must be doing something else to keep him actively involved. I wonder which game Cam and RS play to determine who changes the old man's diaper...coin flip or rock-paper-scissors?

Please don't hit the post reply button more than once. But it once and then refresh or navigate away.

Actually tried that to no avail. The last time I refreshed the page, it showed up 3 times. I guess...when you got to make point, you got to make a point.

Bad enough that Yates got first team reps this week.

Guess Savage's rope just got a little shorter.

This team is being run like it is still training camp and exhibition games.

Running wannabe players in and out of the lineup, absolutely no cohesion at all.:firehair: Total and absolute chaos.

Lack of quality depth I suppose.

It's all OB's fault. :sarcasm:

And losing Bouye not the only change. Lack of a pass rush will make any secondary look bad

It seems the pass rush with Watt, Mercilus, etc... covered up a lot of deficiencies in the Secondary like Watson covered up deficiencies in the O-line! Guess we're totally screwed this season! :shades:

This season was toast the second Watson went down. I will be surprised if they can stay competitive, much less win another game.

The previous two 2-14 seasons ended up with head coaching changes. I wonder if the same will happen after 3-13? Rumors of the FO unhappy with O'Brien still persists, but perhaps his apparent chemistry and success with Watson will grant him a stay of execution for another season. O'Brien has also been a point man for the owner and GM the past couple of weeks. McNair has released a couple of quotes, but Rick Smith seem AWOL with regards to the media.

I'm not sure what to even look forward to in the off-season with Watson out until maybe preseason and beyond, and no draft pick until the third day. Maybe some movement in FA, but who knows with this franchise.

I will definitely be paying attention to and watching a lot more Astros in the spring and summer.

RS at odds with McNair and/or OB on Kaep?

It makes you wonder, doesn't it? A couple of Houston sports talk shows were wondering yesterday where Smith has been, because he's been very silent about all of this stuff.

tbh, my thoughts on Smith have changed over the years. We know he's not the traditional GM at the center of power. You mentioned in on thread that he fetches the players, and I think his role is more about contracts and salary cap management. I think the owner and head coaches have more to do with the general direction of this team over the years. JMO, of course, but Smith seems fairly benign and not a guy with a lot of vision to mold a team around.

.

As usual. Rick Smith rarely gets trotted out in front of the media like most NFL GMs do. I have seen a couple members of the Houston media ask why but there should be more asking this same question

I don't know how there isn't a full front office reshuffle looking at the roster we have

If Watson is healthy, we're fantastic. If Watson isn't healthy, we're a pile of dog sh!t for a team. I love Watson, but hate the situation we're in.

You could say that for just about all the NFL teams and their starting QB. (Green Bay, Seattle, New England, etc) It’s the first time we have been able to say that about a QB on our roster in a long time.

Colts lost their starter and beat the Texans at home.

GB and NE are not that bad

It's really bad. I mean we had the top rated defense for several years straight to now swimming at the bottom.

We finally had a competent offense lead by a very promising rookie. Now that hope has been snatched away from us by the the football gods with the snap of their fingers.

Now we really have to worry about Watson health.

Finally, the freaking owner and his dumb ash statement. It's going to be hard for Rick to acquire FA. Some people are already up his ash , so this will give them more fuel to pour on the fire. They will not factor this in when we don't acquire top free agents.
Also Bob just might move the team.

That's how bad it is.

Don't forget the offensive line and special teams. Oh and TE.

Point is teams struggle to do anything but lose without their starter. Compare starter WL with backup WL. I think you may have misinterpreted my post.

I think we can all agree the colts are a trash team with or without luck

On top of that, the linebackers can't cover either.

Looks like we won the trade and got some free draft picks from the Seahawks. Duane is out, and probably done for the season. Things are starting to look up, kinda sorta...

Sad thing is Watson's injury really shows how incompetent the Texans org really is, this includes Bob/Ricky McNair/O'Brien/Scouts/Waterboy etc...

Remember when I said that the Texans org would rue the day that they chose not to participate in FA like the other 31 teams in the NFL? Those chickens are coming home to roost.

Yeah it's easy to be right with general assertions covering any misfortune. Success.

Remind me which free agent you called for would have prevented a non-contact practice injury?

Chicken Little wasn't prescient when the tornado hit either.

Cant stand it that I called this before it happened.

Fact is the team was way too dependent on a rookie QB to save their season. # Lack of planning/ a Texans tradition under Ricky.

GB is bad. They will be lucky to win 3 more games with Hundley under center. Rodgers IS the Packers.
They don't call it a quarterbacks league for nothing.
Every thing regresses or maybe even collapses without the franchise QB - defense ends up being on the field so long even good ones are exposed.
And who got us our franchise QB ? Right.

You didn't. But since you're putting yourself on the back you might run by the Dollar Store and pick up a back scratcher.

And the team was depending on Savage, who you backed.

Yes I did and you know this. Look up my post history in the OL/AE RS thread.

I'm not patting myself on the back. I'm actually laughing at how incompetent the Texans org is being/has been run for yrs.

PS, Mail me a back scratcher as a Christmas gift.

And yet they would probably blow out the colts at home

Maybe win, but not blow out. Both of those teams suck without the starting QB's, as do the Texans without Watson. GB defense is garbage and Hundley still hasn't thrown the ball more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. ~~~

Now I'm a full blown Tom Savage fan. I hope he proves everyone wrong & starts lighting it up.

Your statement on Rick is hardly secret (and I generally agree), but the offensive line woes fall more on your friend O'Brien. Smith is a glorified gopher, he doesn't demolish a system unless someone tells him to. O'B inherited 3 probowlers on the offensive line, not including Brandon Brooks. With the release of Brown (because ethics are more important than winning - criminals are ok), we're now down to our standout centers who's claim to fame is rarely getting trucked.

We have standout centers?

Then you're in for a sore disappointment. Put a good OL in front of him and he can be a decent backup, but he'll never be a franchise QB.

BOB isn't my friend, I've said I want him gone because he gets conservative with games on the line. See: Seattle/Pats

According to BOB Ricky is in charge of acquiring personnel. You seriously don't think Ricky doesn't decide which FA's are let go and which ones are brought in?

It's in OB's contract he controls the 53. Ask your boy Texian. Oops he's been MIA since Watson was more than an average QB at best.
