I am happy with the progress this team is making. Before the season, I thought we would be 8-8 and they met expectations. Today's win was huge for me personally and for the team. We are no longer losers finally. Ending the season on an upbeat note is great for the fans as it enables us to look forward to next year with legit playoff dreams. Additionally, the improvements that we are making and progress that we have been making will have the players really buy-in to the Kubiak program which is huge. This team unlike the 2004 7-9 team is not built on smoke and mirrors as there are legit NFL talent on both sides of the ball.
Kubiak after having some horrible games in the middle of the season in which the team was not prepared (which he admitted to) should get credit in continuing to improve the team despite significant injuries to our starting QB, Pro Bowl caliber corner, and our big free agent bust of a pickup in Ahman Green.
Improving to 6 wins then 8 is great and we are on track in becoming a legit team.
Going from 8-8 to an 10-12 win team is going to be VERY hard. What do you think needs to happen? My wish list of necessary action items is below:
1. Fire Richard Smith and hire an elite DC. Richard Smith's scheme and use of a front 7 which has some of the best talent in the league is piss poor IMO. He does a horrible job in disguising and utilizing blitzes. I think an elite DC would do wonders with the unit if we address the secondary in the off-season. I really believe we can have a defense that can terrorize the league.
2. Get a legit LT through the draft or free agency. Joe Thomas did wonders for the Browns this year and I would love for us to get an impact LT like that. This along with RB are our greatest offensive needs. We need to get a stud and not a band aid.
3. Draft a RB. In my dream world, I would love to land McFadden. We should draft a RB in the first 3 rounds. I want a speedy guy. This should be a good draft for RBs. Guys like Ray Rice, Mike Hart, and the dude from UCF would look great in a Texans uni.
4. Secondary. As much as I love Dunta and want him to be a part of our first playoff team, I have concerns whether he can come back from his devastating injury. I would like for us to draft a minimum of 2 secondary guys high in the draft and I want us to look in the free agent market for a safety or CB.
Even if we do all of the above, it will be a challenge to make the playoffs because we play in the toughest division in the NFL and in the AFC you have to be minimum 10-6 to be in the playoffs. I think we can do it. If we get a LT and legit RB we will have a better offense than Tennessee and with an elite DC and secondary help can have one of the best D's in the league. That should help us get the 5th or 6th spot hopefully.
