Is this really a surprise?..................Even if a Fed lawsuit was not successfull, Bob Kraft, Jerry Jones, Snyder certainly didn't want their books opened again..................confirms the Fed courts' categorizing the NFL as a "Cartel."

Did “multiple owners” urge Roger Goodell to suspend Deshaun Watson less than a full year?
Posted by Mike Florio on August 29, 2022, 5:43 AM EDT

When the NFL and quarterback Deshaun Watson agreed to an 11-game suspension and $5 million fine, a case could have been made that it would have been better for the Browns to have Watson miss a full year. That would have truly suspended Watson’s contract, pushing it back by a full year, keeping him under contract through 2027, and slashing his salary in 2023 from $46 million to the veteran minimum for a player with his level of experience (currently, that’s $1.035 million).

Some within league circles may have thought the same thing. As noted by Peter King in his new Football Morning in America column, a “prominent team executive” recently said this: “I think there were multiple owners who didn’t want Deshaun Watson suspended for the season, and told Roger Goodell that.”

An 11-game suspension results in the 2022 season counting under Watson’s contract, making him a free agent after 2026 and pushing his salary to $46 million in 2023. It brings Watson back with only six games remaining, making it very difficult for the Browns to realize significant value from Watson in the first year of his five-year deal.

Cleveland’s decision to give Watson a five-year, fully-guaranteed, $230 million contract has ruffled plenty of feathers. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, who now has to navigate the Watson deal when trying to sign Lamar Jackson to a long-term extension, spoke publicly about the Watson contract in March. As King reports it, some owners apparently spoke privately about not wanting Watson to be suspended for a full year, in what would be a bit of payback to the Browns for paying so much guaranteed money to Deshaun Watson.
When posters were talking about the nfl wasn't scared of federal court, I disputed that. They didn't want them books opened under any circumstances. The Ravens owner have some nerve too.

Baker Mayfield reportedly said of Browns: “I’m going to f–k them up”
Posted by Mike Florio on August 30, 2022, 1:36 PM EDT

Baker Mayfield is fiery to a fault. It’s sometimes problematic. It’s always entertaining.

Most recently, Mayfield reportedly said to Bills preseason sideline reporter Cynthia Frelund of a looming game against the
Browns in his first regular-season game as not a Brown, “I’m going to **** them up.”

She reluctantly made the disclosure, in a roundabout way, during a visit to the Around The NFL podcast, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. After the Bills-Panthers preseason game, Frelund spoke to Mayfield.

“I walked up to him and said, ‘I’m so excited to see you, like, go kick some butt,’ I didn’t say that word,” she said. “’Go kick some butt, especially Week One, I like cannot wait.’ And he uses some expletives and I was like, ‘I just hope you’re like ready.’ He was like, ‘I’m gonna bleep them up.'”

She then confirmed that word she omitted had four letters and started with an F.

It’s not a surprise. Mayfield, even if he wasn’t habitually feisty, would reasonably be upset about how he was treated. They told him after the 2021 season that he’s their guy for 2022. Then they told him that he’s their guy, unless they find someone better. Then they leaked to Chris Mortensen of ESPN that they want an adult in the room at quarterback. Then they traded for Deshaun Watson and gave him a five-year, $230 million, fully-guaranteed contract.

So, yeah, he should be pissed. And no one should be surprised by what he said.

And no one should be surprised if he does what he said he’s going to do. He may even go back to Cleveland for a Progressive commercial during which he plants a Panthers flag at midfield.

The Browns’ win total at SI Sportsbook is set at 9.5 wins, with the odds heavily skewed toward the under.
I'm not arguing, but even with Brissett playing 11 games, that team should be at worse 5-6. Yeah, they have that kind of talent. Watson comes back for 6 games, they should win 4 of 6. That puts them at 9 or 10 wins. Seems about right to me.

I can just as easy see them going 2-9 their first 11

If Watson comes back for 6 games.. He still has to be reinstated. There's a lot of time left where he can slip on a lube tube..

Really? C'mon man. The run game and defense will look like it did last year with a busted shoulder Baker. If they go 2-9 with an experienced, low to qb, then they don't have a top 5 roster which they have.

They also will have tons of distractions, open on the road vs Baker, have 3 division games, the entire AFC east, the Chargers and the Bucs in those first 11 games

That's a tough schedule to open with Brissette under center.

Now, should Brissette get the Browns out of the gate strong during that 11 game stretch....maybe 7-4, I'd venture to say the Browns would be in another quandary. Do they sit Brissette so Watson can start or do they stay with the hot hand and let Watson carry the clipboard? Or, do they try and move Watson at the deadline to recoup the draft picks lost? I'm hoping Brissette comes out of the gate strong to force another twist on this whole Watson saga.

I don't think it matters how strong Brissett comes out, the Browns and everyone else knows who he is. And I think you must be sick in hoping the Browns do well in any aspect

No, actually I would like to see if Brissette could get his game to the expectations scouts had for him before the draft. This is from a pure football perspective.

Watson is a case of you play the money not the player. Browns gave up to much for him and put to many eggs in the basket for them to sideline him for a journeyman QB even if Brissette goes 11-0. Watson will play the first game he is allowed to and you will never hear Brissette's name mentioned again after the "We thank Jacob for guiding the ship when we needed him to and for holding down the fort." speech.

Concur....great reply.

Players don't believe in distractions. That's something made up. During practice and games, them guys have blinders and ear muffs on. I have a good friend of mine who was on that Ravens team when Ray Lewis situation was going to. Nobody in the locker room even acknowledged it. Watson being suspended, he's out the picture, nothing to say about it. When Schaub was throwing pick 6s, you think the team was distracted? Nope, they just didn't play well.

Well, we pretty much know Brissett isn't going 11-0.

I’m thinking the Browns are pretty much in the spot Indy was in last season. Good team, both sides of the ball. Just add QB.

Carson Wentz/Jacoby Brisett… eh.

It’s going to come down to coaching & managing the game. So far, imo, Stefanski hasn’t shown to be in Reich’s league.

Okay, I can see that but it's already out there that some of his teammates aren't thrilled to have Watson on the team. And the rest of my point stands.

not doubting you, but i must have missed that part
Berea, OH — Reports from Browns training camp indicate that their offensive lineman range from mildly uncomfortable to completely terrified for their safety when new quarterback Deshaun Watson is under center.
“We’re obviously all aware of the allegations. It’s hard not to think about when you’re bent over and he gets close behind you and sticks his hand in your crotch,” said Browns center Ethan Pocic.
In practice, fans have observed lineman wincing when Watson suddenly shouts an audible at the line of scrimmage and sweating before they even take the field. During one instance, a single tear trickled down Pocic’s face when Watson lingered a suspiciously long time before signaling to snap the ball.

"I see O.J., man, and he looks scared."
"And a baba booey to you all"

"Peter, by the way, just for the record, this is Al Michaels. That was a totally farcical call...Lest anybody think that that was somebody who was truly across the street, that was not. He said something in code at the end that's indicative of the mentioning of the name of a certain radio talk show host."

Wait a minute. I know you are referencing this post from one of the two Watson threads on this forum. However, this is written by an aspiring comedy writer (Kyle Qualls) for laughs and clicks. Right?
Whoever wrote it, it has a direct quote from a Cleveland Browns Center in it

Disagree. Stefanski has made the playoffs with Baker Mayfield and was a bad call away from beating KC. Reich has 1 playoff win with Luck and that's it. Matter of factly, all Reich had to do is beat the lowly Jags and didn't do it.

That’s a satire site, like The Onion, and it’s a fake quote. They can legally do that under the Fair Use law as long as it is meant to be satire. For further example look at all the “quotes” from various people on the Onion. In fact there are two articles underneath it from the same site that also do this.

“Moving to a state that bans interracial marriage and telling her our marriage is illegal seems like a much easier conversation than telling her I haven’t loved her since six months after the wedding,” said Justice Thomas.

“My friends, now is the time for bold waiting. We have the Presidency as well as majorities in the House and Senate. Now is the time to take a deep breath, inhale all that wildfire smoke, and be patient,” said Schumer at a rally for climate action.

Clearly neither Schumer or Thomas actually said these or it would have been on every news feed for weeks.

Take the under 9.5 all day long. It should have been 7.5. 2023 is a different story.

It would be a quandry for a smart owner. No way does truck stop Haslam's ego let him let go of his shiny new toy.

Once again, stay classy Cleveland..

Just as soon as you start to sort of feel sorry for Browns fans. . .

Of course, that doesn't mean all of them, but then again, you choose to be a fan. I'd probably just walk away from the Texans if they were sinking to the Browns low.

To be fair it's only reasonable to take environmental conditions into account when sizing up one's bad behavior. I just say that to say that if I were born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio of all places f*ck only knows the kind of dirt merchant sob I would've become. Like you said part of me wants to cut them some little kind of slack for being 'born that way'.

Hell, you can only visit the rock n roll hall of fame so many times and apologizing for LeBron has to get old after a couple decades..

In fact, each of us has an imprint of the past. We can be a little more forgiving, because not everyone was born an aristocrat.

Completion is required to play in a regular season game. No satisfactory completion of the counseling (which will be just a joke), no playing when suspension period over............in which case, technically he can receive additional punishment.

How long until he's out there preying again?
