DraftTek presents the 2011 Texans draft

BetaV1

Rookie
....with BetaV1 as your GM! :kitten:

Neat little website is this DraftTek. It's essentially a draft simulator with loads of features. Among its great qualities are your ability to decide a team's priority based on position before and after a top player in said position is drafted.

As your pseudo-Texans GM, I'd think it's pretty obvious we have glaring needs at tight end that need to be addressed early and often in this draft.

GOTCHA!

The Texans defense was one of the worst in NFL history and probably the worst I'll see in my lifetime. Defense is what's on the agenda and there's no swaying me about that; therefore, I have made it a priority to go defense in the first three rounds no matter what. More specifically, I feel that we must nab a free safety and strong safety.

The Texans secondary gave up 56 plays of 20+ yards, ranking them the sixth worst in the league in this category. They've also given up 18 plays of 40+ yards, making them the worst defense in this category by far. Big plays are usually the result of poor safety play. Many people have bought too deeply into the lie that a great pass rush will offset these. While a great pass rush certainly helps, the safeties have a job just as much as the defensive line does, and that job is to make sure no one gets behind them. They're the last line of defense and they've clearly failed. We need two new starting safeties and as your pseudo-GM, I won't budge from this belief. If you don't like it, then cancel your season tickets. There's 50,000 people out there who will pick them up. MWAHAHAHA!!!!

With that said, here's the draft:

Why didn't I take any corners? I'm not convinced the defensive woes were entirely their fault, despite all the falling down. I'm expecting Wade to coach them up. The safeties were by far a bigger need.

Also, I went WR twice because we need to come in here and actually perform like they want to compliment the best wide out in the league. There's a reason why you usually have two wide receivers on the field at the same time, and it's not just so one can take pressure off the other by merely being an extra body on the field. We need to find a legit compliment to AJ.

Lastly, I thought DraftTek was/is wrong on Von Miller being "reach" at 11. Naturally I would've liked to grab Patrick Peterson here, but he won't be there. Von Miller, however, should be in the top ten overall and if he's not, we need to take him.

Houston falling to pick 61? Sorry, but that ain't happening.

My only issue is 34 end is going to be a strong position this year, and you take two. Are these rush OLB's? Cause I can't see that many guys in our DE rotation.

Oh man, people are going to cry if we take two WR! I agree with you though on why we take the WR. Why not put more fire power in a good offense.

I think some people might be forgetting we have Dickerson, Andre Davis, Holliday and DA. Not to mention the practice squaders

I don't really care much for Davis anymore, but still have high hopes for Dorin. I like DA a lot, but if Holliday can take that role, fine.

In the end, I wouldn't scoff at WR taken later in the draft. I'd just prefer not to.

I think we need to draft a WR from the 2-4th round due the fact that we really don't have a true no 2 threat. Yes we have depth at the 3wr spot.

With Aj coming back from injury, also getting older, it would make sense to draft someone that we could groom behind AJ. (Yes Dorin could be good, but can we expect much out of a 7th round draft pick?)

Boy oh boy. Houston is in the talks of our 1st rounder and he went 61? If I were to cherry pick this is what I'd like from that order:

1 (11) - DE J.J. Watt, Wisconsin
2 (42) - OLB Justin Houston, Georgia
3 (73) - ILB Casey Matthews, Oregon
4 (104) - FS Rahim Moore, UCLA
5 (141) - DE Brandon Bair, Oregon
6 (172) - SS Jeron Johnson, Boise St.
7 (202) - FB/RB Stanley Havili, Southern Cal
____________________________________

DE: M. Williams, J.J. Watt(R), A. Smith, B. Bair(R), M. Spears(FA)
DT: S. Cody, E. Mitchell, D. Lewis
OLB: J. Houston(R), C. Barwin, X. Adibi (Cushing/Diles/Matthews may double as backup OLB)
ILB: D. Ryans, B. Cushing, D. Sharpton, C. Matthews, Z. Diles, K. Bentley
CB: I. Taylor(FA), J. Allen, G. Quin, K. Jackson, B. McCain, A. Molden
FS: R. Moore, T. Nolan
SS: B. Pollard, J. Johnson, Q. Demps

This would give us some solid talent. We're likely going into the draft without the ability to fill holes though Free Agency but that doesn't mean I take need over talent. After the draft we must sign a FA CB like Asomugha, Bailey or Ike Taylor. I think Spears may be an edition Wade can add as backup and I wouldn't be surprised to see a NT and/or S. This gives us a great base going into the season before we have to make final roster cuts.

Offense was largely avoided in the draft due to BPA being on defense as well as our needs. Havili can catch out of the backfield and block. Good insurance for Leach and backup RB. Could probably be stashed on the P.S. Wanted to address WR but it didn't come up. Would like to see a decent FA signing here and possibly address some OL. I think Butler will be retained as the swing tackle.

Kerley's from my hometown! He's a heck of a returner and a decent receiver. It'd be awesome to see him as a Houston Texan.

My thoughts exactly, JB. I couldn't believe how far down I had to scroll to find him. I like him alot better than Miller. I know you can't go soley on YouTube highlights but that's what I'm limited to. I see more whiffs than pressures even, let alone tackes. I like Houston MUCH better. JMO

This draft, is jizz worthy, but goes to show how bad the original mock is.

Damn, I would love your draft... every player would make the roster, and with the exception of Bair, would contribute immediately.

Gomes in the third?

Dude was a hybrid LB/S he has no NFL position.

He made plays in college but not sure he is anything other than a special teamer in the pros.

Trade down and get three and I dont care what you do with the rest of the draft

Stephen Paea DT43 Oregon State
Justin Houston OLB34 Georgia
Mike Pouncey OC Florida

This would be a great draft. Houston isn't going to fall.

Kerley would be a great pick inthe 5/6th rd.

He's a playmaker and has KR/PR skills.

My 7th rd pick would be Jimmy Young Wr TCU. Big fast guy, has good hands. Should fall because he didn't get many thrown his way last yr.
