He was in Austin on Wedeneday. Thinking of owning the Arena League's Wranglers.
Prime Time comes to Austin! Former NFL superstar Deion Sanders was at the Wranglers team office on Wednesday for a meeting with President Doug MacGregor and General Manager Glyn Milburn. Sanders is interested in joining the Wranglers organization.
Deion Sanders
On why he is in Austin meeting with the Wranglers:
We had very productive meetings, and there are some exciting possibilities for me on the horizon with the Austin Wranglers. Im excited to get back to talk with my other partners.
I'm very interested in arena football. I love the game and have loved it for years. I really just have the time and commitment to give to it, so I'm exploring the opportunities.
On what he knows about the city:
I came down to Austin years ago for Cowboys training camps. Austin is a beautiful city with great scenery. And everyone knows about the Texas Longhorns and what they have done in baseball, football and basketball.
On what he knows about the Austin Wranglers:
I know this is a thriving community with a wonderful Arena Football League organization. I know this is an exciting brand of football. Theyre good. They win. They are potentially going to make the playoffs. Anytime you think about investing in something, you learn more about it and how you would use your time and money.
If I don't like what I see, I may just have to go down there and play. (laugh) You never know when I might put on a uniform. I would love to bring Prime Time to Austin.
On his experience with Arena Football:
Its exciting. Its totally opposite from the NFL where its better to watch it at home than watch it live. With Arena, its better to watch it live because its so exciting.
From my time at Florida State, I have seen Arena Football with the teams there. Ive taken my kids to see games. Even my grandmother likes Arena Football.
On where he goes from here with the Wranglers:
Im excited about the meeting. You never kiss and tell.
On what he thinks about the new NFL crackdown on celebrations:
I love celebrations, but you dont belittle opponents. I dance because thats what I did as a child. I dance because I was happy. But there are Deion rules in the NFL. No more headbands, no bandanas, all kinds of rules.
On the Dallas Cowboys recent acquisition of Terrell Owens:
TO is a great fit. They got him at a bargain basement price, since he is the best receiver in the league. I talked with him last week. Its not how you start, but how you finish. His problems werent on the field. You never speak about finances publicly, and thats what happened with TO.
On former Texas quarterback Vince Young and his NFL future:
I would like to represent him. (laugh) He should be the first pick. Its a travesty if he isnt. I like his character, his personality, the things that his teammates say about him in the dark, when he isnt there. Im most definitely a big fan of his.
Wranglers President Doug MacGregor
On todays meeting with Deion and future discussions:
We are keenly interested in aggressively pursuing the opportunity to bring Deion Sanders into our organization in some capacity. This was just a preliminary meeting.
On what Deion would bring to the Wranglers:
I know that he is a man of character who brings a lot that this organization could benefit from. I wont go into specifics, but we are exploring opportunities with Deion. All partners need to be completely aligned in this. There are no specific plans. Having an active, involved owner with the stature of Deion would be a huge asset to this team.
Wranglers General Manager Glyn Milburn
On how the relationship with Deion started:
A good friend of mine, Robert Jones, won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys and was a teammate of Deions. They met at a reunion a few weeks back, and Deion expressed some interest in the Wranglers. He has always been a fan of Arena Football, and Robert has been involved with sponsorships.
