So Bears QB Jay Cutler is now signed through 2020.
Foxsports.com's Alex Marvez reports the first three years of Cutler's deal average $18 million per season.
Real curious to see the backhalf, but overall it's not important. Most players rarely play out a full contract and he'll likely be cut before the final year of the deal. The first three seasons are what's important, and at that price, no thanks.
So... that's not happening.
QB Choices:
1) Draft
2) Sign a FA (but now there are none worth the starting position)
3) Stick with what we have on the roster.
1 and 3 seem like the only viable options we have right now, and 3 ain't real viable.
I don't hate Cutler. I just didn't want to see him in Texans gear.
I'm so glad the Bears took care of this early, if only because I did not want to hear Armchair GM constantly bring Cutler's name up as a QB for the Texans.

Cutler isn't terrible. He's better than Schaub when Schaub was good but I want this team to do better than that. I wouldn't give cutler that kind of money. I don't think he's worth it but the the bears problem now. I thought mccown played better than cutler and was a cheaper option.
Biggest waste of money on an overrated QB since Flacco.
The idea was never for Cutler to be our future QB. If we signed him at all, he would only have been here for one year. We would have drafted a rookie QB. Cutler, the Rookie, & Case would compete for the starting job. Whoever wins, wins.
But we need a QB on this roster who has won in the NFL. Otherwise, imo, a competition between Keenum & the rookie is a competition between two of the lesser evils.
McNair said we're not rebuilding.
If we were able to sign Mallet for 4 years, we'd have a better chance at winning 10 games than taking a chance & just going with Bridgewater.
What exactly about Mallett's illustrious career of 1 completion in 4 attempts and a pick who was a third round pick, really makes you say with a straight face that he'd give us a better chance than the near unanimous thought of best QB in the draft? You are aware that rookies CAN take teams to the playoffs, right?
Also, why are people even wanting Mallett? Dude is stupid.
Way, way too much money for Cutler but I understand why Chicago felt they needed to lock him up. Good thing the deal is front loaded so they can release him in 3 years when he's not worth that money anymore (if he ever was).
4) Trade for a vet and groom a draft pick
How quickly we forget the David Carr days . .
What veteran QB worth his salt is going to want to come here knowing that his role will be just to fill in while the the high priced rookie is groomed.
If we take a QB high in the draft, even if it's a trade down out of 1.1, he starts on opening day. There won't be any "competition". This is why I don't want to them to draft any QB in the 1st round.
Regarding Cutler . . . Thank you God for making the Bears FO lose their minds.
Yeah, 3-4 year back-loaded deal I can see, but this is ridiculous. When I saw the thread title I honestly thought it was a joke. Horrible signing by the Bears. Just for clarification, aside from it being Cutler, a yawn of a QB, the amount and length of the deal is the horrible part.
56-48 - Yeah, he's technically a winner. (Then again, so is Schaub)Yeah, because winning sucks.
Now we(armchair GMs) are going to throw names like Freeman, Hoyer, & Cassell out there. Maybe we trade for Flynn, or Mallet, maybe Cousins.
I do not want to go into the 2014 season when our best QB has never won an NFL game.
Free agency begins about two months before the draft, so a vet QB signed before the draft won't know for certain that there will be a rookie QB to compete against.
Cutler is a middle-of-the-road guy who never earned his #11 overall pick. Is he a stop-gap? Sure. Let's not act like he's some sort of top-tier guy.
Next on my list is Josh Freeman, then Brian Hoyer
I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.
Next on my list is Josh Freeman, then Brian Hoyer, then I hope they trade for someone.
Hoyer's under contract to the Browns, and Josh Freeman is...well, he's Josh Freeman.
If you're looking for a one (or maybe even two) year guy, I think I'd be trying to talk to Josh McCown (assuming he's not going to retire).
If all we want is a one year rental then why not take a look at Vick? He's likely to make it just as far into the season as Cutler is before they both get hurt.

So it's essentially a 3 year, 54 million dollar deal. Kind of like Schaub's actually, but no lingering caphits beyond the "prove it" year. 18m APY is really high though, so it's still not a good deal for the team.
A player's base salary is usually not guaranteed. The player only makes that money if he's on a team's roster for that particular season.
When you see a player sign a five-year or six-year deal, the base salaries are routinely included when the total amount of the deal is discussed. However, unless the player is actually on the roster to start the regular season in that particular year he doesn't get that money unless it's been specifically dealt with in the language of the contract.
And that's rare for a team to guarantee somebody's base salary over the long term.
It's a one year deal.
If he doesn't prove worthy to keep beyond 2014, they can cut him & not pay him a dime, not have any dead money on the books. Unless that salary for 2015 is truly guaranteed. I know they said "guaranteed" but it's funny how they sometimes mean "guaranteed." Maybe they're saying guaranteed in case of injury. But with his history, I don't know why they would do that. Guaranteed as in if he makes the day 1 roster, he gets paid. But they can release him prior to day 1 if they want to save money.
If his salaries for year 2 & 3 are truly guaranteed (& the Bears are on the hook for that money if he were cut) that would be a very unique contract. I was thinking Cutler was going to have to sign a one year deal to prove to his next team that he was worthy of a long term contract. This, is basically the same, but better. He's already got very good compensation for years 2 & 3 already negotiated.
Have you read anything specific to Cutler's deal that would support that statement? If not, then it's contract where the first 54m is guaranteed.
At least 10 former Chicago Bears staffers from the Lovie Smith and Marc Trestman regimes said recently they believe the team can't consistently compete for championships as long as it fields a lineup with Jay Cutler under center.
That sentiment might explain why head coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace remain uncommitted to Cutler as the team's starting quarterback for 2015. Deciding whether to commit to Cutler has a time element. If Cutler is on the Bears' roster on March 12, $10 million of his 2016 salary is guaranteed.
...
Two teammates, who also asked to remain anonymous for this story, characterized Cutler as a divisive figure with whom they'd rather not continue to play.
In six years with the Bears, Cutler has gone through four offensive coordinators, two head coaches and a pair of general managers. Yet Cutler remains very much in play as the team's potential long-term solution at the position, in part, because of the seven-year, $126.7 million extension the quarterback signed in January 2014...
I just don't understand. Cutler has been in the league for nine years. After two years I was pretty sure what he was. After three I was ready to give up on him. And after four years I was absolutely certain beyond all doubt. And still, five years after that he is still getting a pass and making $18m per season.
His average season is 20 TDs and 14 INTs. That's not his worst year, that's his AVERAGE over nine years.
Last season was the best statistical year of his career and he still threw 18 INTs.
Absolutely insane.

I'm with you there. He's the modern day Jeff George. Great arm, but EVERYTHING else is lacking, but some teams still have a woody for him.

To be fair, he flashes enough for people to keep giving him a chance. He had seven games with a passer rating over 90 in 2014. Three games over 100.
In 2013 he played in 11 games. He had a passer rating over 90 in seven of them. Over 100 in four of them.
His problem is that he's just as likely to have games below 80. Four of them in 2013 (out of 11 games) all below 74. He had one game with a passer rating of 8. In 2014 he had 5 games below 80. Two were below 70.
