In the middle of the controversy are tens if not hundreds of thousands of unsold C. Johnson replica jerseys available throughout sporting goods stores nationwide. If Ocho Cinco wants to wear Ocho Cinco on his back, first he must buy back all those C. Johnson jerseys.
The jerseys are made by Reebok, the official licensee of NFL apparel.
When a player requests a name change or a number change, the player is responsible for that unsold inventory, said NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy.
They have to buy the unsold jerseys. It relates to the inventory that Reebok has in stock anticipating the jerseys it will sell based on previous years sales for that jersey.
A CNBC report on Monday said the jerseys, which retail for about $75, could cost Ocho Cinco $48 per jersey, the cost of production. Reebok declined to say how much C. Johnson inventory is sitting unsold in stores.
