Certainly there were things about this season that disappointed. However, I think we definitely took a big step forward. After week 3, we were 6-7. That's not exactly inspiring but it's a long ways from 2-14. The defense once the rookies got a little experience and once Faggins returned became an above average NFL defense.
Simply plugging in a decent punter would have gotten us to 8 wins this year. I think next year's defensive unit with Weaver, Mario, TJ, AMaddox, Ryans, Greenwood, Dunta, etc... is 3 players away from being a top NFL defense. We need a FS (not too pricey), a CB, and either a SLB or another DL. I think a DL rotation of Mario, Weaver, Payne, Maddox, TJ, Kalu? will be very formidable against the run and at least average at rushing the passer. A solid FS will really improve the pass coverage and a good CB would turn this thing into a potentially great one... Dunta on the #2 and Faggins as a nickel CB is a very promising situation.
Offensively, this coaching staff is obviously very competant. Unfortunately, we are still weak everywhere we were weak going into this season. However, I trust the staff to fill some of the holes. At least we no longer need a TE or a #2 Wr. I think a good FA OLman and another via the draft will go a long way into transforming this offense into a solid one. Of course, the question mark is at QB. But, even if that situation remains the same, we know that this staff will remove Carr for Rosenfels if it makes sense to do so.
6 wins with the worst punter in the league and huge and numerous injuries at key positions. 6 wins while starting 5 rookies in week one and changing the entire concept of the offense and defense. We made huge strides this year. With a good offseason and some good fortune regarding current and future injuries, this team may actually win more than it loses next year.
