With none of the conference's heavyweights seeming that prepared to step aside, finding an upgrade over here is really tricky. That explains why I'm taking a big, blind swing and going with the (drum roll) Houston Texans.

Now that you've finished laughing (well, most of you), let's count the ways these Texans have a puncher's chance.

I can think of, oh, two.

Now that David Carr is standing upright in Charlotte, the Texans are ready to roll with new quarterback Matt Schaub. OK, so Schaub has limited starting experience, but at least he'll be allowed to hand off to Ahman Green and pitch the ball to Andre Johnson.

More good news: the offensive line may not be the worst in the league (hey, I said this was a big swing).

Stars of an improving defense are linebacker DeMeco Ryans, cornerback Dunta Robinson and (maybe) the aforementioned defensive end Williams. First-round pick Amobi Okoye could be a beast at tackle once he reaches legal drinking age.

Texans fans also point out that their team swept Jacksonville and scored a victory over Indianapolis last season.

Are you convinced? I don't blame you.
 
It is interesting to see a sudden mood swing in the national media about the Texans. We seem to be on a few people's radar this year. I hope we prove them right and the bandwagon fills up. There is nothing like having a good team and enjoying all the positive press that comes with it.

There are several key factors (all of them summed up as winning more games) that could help the Texans this year.

1. Winning in the AFC South. I'm not thrilled about what the Jags, Titans, or Colts did this offseason. Truth will be put out on the field, but as critical as I am of the Texans, Houston made the biggest and important pick-ups this year: a top-rated DT and a huge RB. I wouldn't say any of the other teams in the AFC South have done as well at filling their needs. If the Texans can improve on what they did last year - meaning beating the Titans in addition to splitting with the Colts and sweeping the Jags - then the Texans will be in a very good place.

2. Winning against the NFC. For me, it is iffy judging NFC talent. But playing the Bucs, Falcons, Panthers, and Saints should be easier than last year's NFC teams. The Texans can beat these teams, and have a good shot at the first three. Not losing the "Washington" game (a la last year) will be important.

3. Winning early. Last year, the Texans had a tough road. More precisely, they had tough opening games last season. This season they play arguable easier competition in the first 6 to 8 games. Gaining momentum and confidence in the first eight games is key to handling the last games, when they will play some tough competition, like New England, New Orleans, and Indianapolis.
 
I think Randy Hill deserves special praise for seeing the change and potential in our new look Houston Texans before anyone else in the national media.
 
I think the Texans are this years 49ers. A mostly young team with some skill positions that are very adequately filled but not enough to get over the hump. We spent alot of money this year clearing money for next year... which was about the best move we made all off season. We do however play in the dominant conference unlike the 49ers so I don't think you'll see us make any kind of Cinderella run at a playoff birth like the 49ers.

Depending on the Vick situation, we could once again start off VERY slow. We've got games against the Cheifs - I know there's alot of turmoil there but its still a very tough team, especially for us with our run defense.

We have the Panthers, Colts, Falcons, Dolphins, Jags, Titans, and Chargers. If we beat the Cheifs, we still might start off 1-7. Your best chances for wins are the Panthers (who I think should be pissed after last year) and the Titans... but neither are pushovers. With all of our new parts we could be in some serious trouble against the Colts Jags and Chargers. And I think that Green is just what the Dr. ordered for the Fins. If I had to guess we wind 3-5.

The second half of our season is a little easier with the Raiders, our bye week (might be the first time all season we don't lose for at least two consecutive weeks) and then the Saints, an improved Browns team (but they say that every year) @ VY's house, the Bucs Broncos @Indy and the Jags. Best chances for a win in the 2nd season come vs the Raiders, Browns and Jags. I think that Indy sweeps us... We lose to the Broncos and Bucs and maybe get swept again by Bud's boys. But this year's 6-10 is alot better than last years if you ask me. The team has some direction, and for the first time since our first 3 seasons, we're talking about what we have to build on instead of what we have to get rid of.
