I love the fact that the Texans are finally (FINALLY!) a "typical" NFL team. I just sent this in a PM to somebody but I thought I'd post it anyway because it's really what's at the bottom of my interest in the team right now and how high I am on our chances this year.
When the Texans started up in 2002 we were excited about having football back. Bad football, good football, it didn't make any difference. We celebrated moral victories and upsets. We celebrated just the fact that we had a team, which really meant that as football fans went we had a future.
Then the losing started to take its toll on us all and as fans we watched the team and tried to find signs of improvement and progress. They really didn't exist and that may be hard to imagine right now but think about it. Is there a single position that the Capers/Casserly Texans could point to and say "FINISHED!"? I'm not talking about an individual player like Dunta Robinson or Andre Johnson. One player doesn't make a position solid much less set. You can't be one player deep at WR or CB (or anything else really) and that's the best the original Texans ever got.
When we would watch the team implode on a series it would so often just be a mystery what happened. I mean, was the QB crap? Did the OL suck? Was the pass protection the responsibility of the RB or what? When we couldn't do something any number of positions on the team could have been to blame but honestly how were any of us supposed to be able to know? We would argue about it endlessly but the team just kept giving us this "THERE IS NO REASON TO PANIC! EVERYTHING IS OK!" line like Kevin Bacon as the ROTC guy in Animal House and meanwhile the whole mess was heading towards the drain and 2-14 faster than you can say "Where in the hell did you get those mittens David?"
Look at how much had to be replaced to get us to where we are now. In many positions we have only one or two guys who were here before Kubiak and Smith started adding parts and some of those guys are hanging on by a thread. Now we look at our team and when something doesn't work we can all look at the QB and say "THIS is not the problem" with confidence. We can generally agree that the OL is working. We can see inadequacies in our running backs and we know it's not some kind of Scooby-Doo Mystery that needs to be solved to get to the bottom of the problem. Of course we still have areas that need improvement. We need another truly talented linebacker and we need a RB to compliment Slaton and not one who will be gone in a year or two. We need to draft a "cherry" to put on top of this sundae because it's getting close to being "DONE". We need a gifted safety back there and we can always use another pass rusher to pair with Mario who will be around for the long haul. We need things but then so does everyone else in the NFL. After all these years we really are just like everybody else.
