Want to apologize to board for hating on Mario during 2006 draft

I lost it last year before the draft. I am a Horn and wanted VY and was disappointed in us passing him. I showed up at Reliant to boo the pick.

I want to apologize to the board and Mario for doing that. He has been great so far this year and is playing like the #1 player in the draft. He has been dominant with an active motor. I am glad he is on our team.

From what I have heard, he is a great guy and a very nice person. Best of luck Mario and the team
 
Good Job on taking your crow. I've seen a poster just disappear ever since Mario began to improve...

Also VY showed up today...but Bush...not so much. 10 carries, about 20 yards, and averaged 2 yards a carry...
 
I wanted VY too, however knew they weren't going to pick him. I nearly fell of my chair in laughter when I learned the Texans were taking Mario (the night before the draft). I was not laughing at the pick, I was laughing because I was estatic they weren't taking Bust .. eerrrr Bush. I was also thinking of all those annoying post by pro Bush posters. I have felt from day 1 that Bush wouldn't be a great player in the NFL however felt the Texans were going to fall for the ESPN hype. Despite not knowing much about Mario, I was relieved when they passed on Bush.

BTW, Bush had 27 yards and 2 fumbles today.

Oh man 2 fumbles too...I didn't even notice those on the stat line...

Wow, I remember a guy saying "There is no way Bush has two bad games..." well he just did.

Wow, Bush doesn't look so good now. I remember after a Texans loss late in the 2-14 season (the Jets maybe) that I actually called the post game wrap-up show and said we should trade the pick for extra picks. Matt Jackson didn't agree but the other guy (Rich Lord?) did.

But, I'm glad that we have Mario and a DL that makes opponents nervous. Defense wins championships and we have a great core of talent to build around.

I was wanting the Texans to pick Reggie Bush, but I wasn't hating on the team for drafting Mario Williams like many others. I wasn't angry or pissed off when we drafted Mario. I could see the logic behind it and wasn't completely against it. I just would have preferred Reggie then. Glad Mario is proving everyone wrong.

thats your best post ever. showing up at the stadium to boo a player you know nothing about and havent gave a chance to show how he will do is not a good thing, at least your admitting you were wrong.

I was in this same boat. I guess since it was announced a day earlier...I cooled off and thought about it. I am never going to hate on Mario, once he became a Texan, I supported him.

Like I told Apple. I am not a Mario lover, I understand his rookie season wasn't that great. What I am though is a Texan Fan, and I will defend him and root for him as long as he's on this team...bottom line. I know with all the "It takes 3 years to determine whether a guy is a bust or not." replies I made.

Thing is, with Travis just recently showing up (at least for one game) and Amobi having a break out game...Mario doesn't have to do too much...

maybe sam bowie was drafted last year after all.
 
I didn't mind the pick until mid season last year. Between then and the Dallas game in pre season this year I was disappointed. Mario is indeed coming on and I will admit that I was quick to judge. It's about attitude and confidence. He's got it for sure now. I love it! Katy bar the door!

IMO, no apology necessary. Your a fan, and it's your right to be critical of your team and express your opinion. Just don't be silly about it.

Before last year's draft, the Texans had Dunta Robinson and nothing on that side of the ball, and that's one of the main reasons why the Texans were bad bad bad in 2005 instead of just expansion bad, hope to keep in close and win bad.

So there ya go.
 
Just to clarify and explain why the fumbles didn't show up in some of the basic stat lines, Reggie the KR's 2 fumbles were not LOST...at least, not by his team. He dropped two, recovered one, and the second was recovered by a teammate.

(Still glad Houston passed him up)

I was not against Mario just wanted a trade down and LT. That was not possible and Carr (at that time) to me appeared able to make a turn around under Kubes. That left Bush who was considered by many as a possible great player and could be a game changer. He would possible add to the running game, end arounds and aid the passing game. Williams is our guy and should get our support.
 
Its hilarious that my post made it on to Coldhardfootball.com. The Texans are my team and I will never root for the opposing QB against us. Last year's game against the Titans was surreal for me and I never want to experience that again.

Mario still has a ways to go before he plays up to where he was drafted but the whole Reggie v. Mario argument has definitely shifted towards Mario's favor this year and nothing could make me happier. The Okoye pick looks like it may pay dividends earlier than expected as well.

As for Mr. Kardashian, Bush doesnt look like he is good enough to be a featured back and if you draft a RB #1 overall you are paying him like one so he better be one.

Yup. It looks like the Saints will revert back to their old selves this year, and they get a 60 million dollar decoy to boot.
 
I suppose I was a minority of one in thinking that we should have taken LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson #1 last year. And that having been said, Brick has had his struggles, too.

Vince Young is still the most impressive of the four so far, but this race is far from over. And I'm not convinced that Young and Kubiak would have been an optimal QB-coach combination.

Let's just leave it at this: I'm really happy with the guys we've got.

I was a "trade back with NY and take Brick" guy. I figured the Jets needed someone to take Martin's place and if Bush was all that, he was exactly what they needed.

BUT...

I bought into the Mario pick pretty quickly. I think my early posting history would show that. I signed on and started coming here just to see what fan's reactions were to the Mario pick and also to get input on the draft as it was taking place.
 
I joined this board right before the 2006 draft. I had been reading during the season before when we were playing absolutely terrible. I joined the board because so many people were controversial over the pick and what we should do, but also because of Kubiak coming and it being a totally new team. One of my first posts was me ranting about how we did not need Reggie Bush. I just felt like he wasn't the type of player we needed at that time. Some people gave me rep for it and some people gave me neg rep (back when you could) for it. I guess me being an ACC guy, I saw Mario play against some tough competition (tough lineman) in college so I was not mad at all after the selection. I think alot of people were mad at first because not alot of people watched NC State play.

I didn't, and still don't mind if we'd traded down for D'Brick or Leinart.

But the people on the old TT board knew that AZWhooper had drawn up a sig "Mario - out to prove the doubter wrong" that I had on.

Not that I ever want to brag, I just didn't feel like the criticism was fair, that's all.

I also have Okoye avatar (from AZ) as well, on another board.
I've been wanting to bring it here as a sig, and will.

I'm from ACC country, too (the first three letters of my handle betray my allegiance). To be fair, I was not completely sold on Mario, based on his inconsistency in college. The measurables are, of course, off the charts, but I never felt like Mario was a game-by-game dominator. Not in the same way that Julius Peppers was for the Heels--that guy was a force and a mean SOB, to boot.

But since you can only draft the players who are available, Mario may prove the best long-term choice. The other choices were:

Reggie Bush: about the last thing a 2-14 team needs is a 3rd down back.

Vince Young: would not have fit with Kubiak's system.

D'Brickashaw: Truth be told, he struggled more at UVA than the predraft media let on. It was his missed block against Duke that caused Schaub to get hurt his senior year, and he could never block Darryl Tapp of VT. Smart kid who could become president some day, but he has work to do to be a top-shelf OT.

A. J. Hawk: A mighty fine linebacker, but we got an even better one in the second round.

Vernon Davis: An absolutely monster of a TE, but that's another luxury position for a 2-14 team.

Matt Leinart: Very telling that his college offensive coordinator passed on him for Young.
 
There were several needs on the team.
And we can build it in different ways.

My preference was Leinart, and that mean one or two more day 1 picks in 06 or 07.

A great possibilty that was (perhaps) available was the Jets at #4 & #27.
And we could have an extra guy like Mangold (C), Addai, or Kiwanuka (DE), that wouldn't be so bad.

Just a thought.

Last year I wanted VY also, but the fact I'm a big defense first type of fan, I wasn't to upset. What upset me more than anything was everbody ragging on him last year for not doing well when he had bad feet. Now we see what he can do.

Believe me folks, our defense is gonna come of age soon. You thought the "fearsome foursome" from that historic Steeler team was good, wait until these guys jell. They will be a force in the NFL that will be talked about for years.

Recall the pre-draft hype swirling about Leinart following in Joe Namath's footsteps? The Jets weren't interested in that, and that's why they didn't buy our 1-for-2 package.

I think it was clear that the Texans were shopping the #1 pick hard. They just could not find takers for the right price.

And as for Petrino passing on Okoye, the Falcons had just lost Patrick Kerney to free agency, so their crying need was a pass-rushing DE. The neat thing about the Schaub trade is that if we had not swapped first round picks, we still take Okoye--no way we pick another DE one year after Mario--and the Falcons still get Anderson (thanks to the idiotic Dolphins taking a kick returner). So that aspect of the Schaub trade cost us nothing--actually it saved us a few bucks since the contract for a #8 is more than one for the #10. Of course, if Landry, Peterson or Brown had fallen past #7, then that part would have stung a bit more.

But what the heck, Amobi looks like the real deal.

I'll bet a steak dinner that Norm Chow had nothing to do with the VY pick. That was Bud Adams all the way. That rat bastard just wanted VY so he can thumb his nose at the Houston fans. Pure and simple.

Two posters on the board, Apple and Overall, I think, was pretty sure about the Jets' interest for the #1 pick.

I did check it out myself, it was a little more than a possibility, from what I read.
I had links from concrete sources, not heresy or washy wishies.
Been too long, don't think I can dig them up though.
