#8 As our QB....

Hey I am bored and I noticed a few quotes that could be taken as subliminal shots at YKW...

Andre Johnson
(on QB Matt Schaub’s attitude) “When you have a quarterback like that it helps the team out. If Matt was in the huddle panicking we would have to try to calm him down, and you don’t want to be in that situation.”

(on the huddle and the attitudes of the guys) “The guys attitudes are different, we are just like lets forget about what happened in the last play and move on to the next play, because you can’t control what happens in the past you can only control what is happening in front of you. We just take it one play at a time.”

Steve McKinny
(on the confidence the offensive line has because of QB Matt Scahub) “He did a great job. Same thing we’ve seen from him all preseason. He does a nice job of getting rid of the ball. He’s very calm in the huddle. Never saw him panicking throughout the day. Just a very positive attitude whatever happened, good or bad, just, ‘Hey, next play, let’s move on, let’s get this next play.’”

Ephraim Saalam
(on Texans QB Matt Schaub’s performance) “First off, I want to say not only that, but the difference everybody made. It was a completely different mentality. Last year when I got here, when we had early mistakes in the game, the roof caved in. Everybody started looking around, like ‘here we go again.’ I didn’t see any of that today. I’m proud to be a part of a team that can change directions and turn the corner so fast. It’s only been a year. It’s been a year, and Matt Schaub has come in here as a leader. He controlled the huddle, better than it’s been here in the past and my hat goes off to him. He stayed in there. He had some early shots; he took them, he got back up, never wavered, and that’s what you look for in a leader on offense.”

Wow, it seems like when YKW was around, one sack would lead to the whole team breaking down because guys would start to panic...I wonder why guys are not like that now...

I say this because some guys were led to believe that NO MATTER who you have behind a bad Oline, it makes no difference. I have even been hearing "You can put Peyton Manning behind that line and find the same results." No...that is why Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning and that is why David Carr is Carr.

Also funny how Andre said "If Matt was in a panic we'd have to try to calm him down, and you don't want to be in that situation." heh almost as if he's been in that situation.

Now...ESPN's first Take is going to have Schaub on sometimes today...a Texan actually on a ESPN show...things are a changing even if its just one game.

Only idiots or family of Carr did not see that the last five years. Moreover, when that half a QB had the backing of the Owner, GM and Coach it perpetuated that sense of "aww $%^!, here we go again."

Even when Schaub got sacked and threw that interception I felt no panic in the stands, on the field or on the sidelines. QB's in this league will get intercepted and get sacked. How they recover is what separates good teams from bad teams in my opinion.

I would love to see that half a QB on the field next week. I spent over 15k dollars having to watch that piece of excrement ruin this team over the last five years.

Salaam said in an interview last night that a QB that gets rid of the ball as quick as Schaub does MAKES THE LINE BETTER.

hmmm...where have I heard that before?

10+ minute drive - Team record in 6 seasons

Longest pass of AJ's career and a career high for him, too.

Three guys on our line from the 2002 team....hmmmm....I think a picture is starting to form here, but I just can't put my finger on it....

oh wait, I know: we finally have a good QB around here! :fans: :wild: :texflag:

move this if needed, but based on title alone:

Schaub better be locked in the film room today:

The interception - why force the throw, trying to FORCE a TD? Get a first down.

Wide open WR's. I noticed Walter downfield wide open twice (once in the endzone) and Jones downfield once. I am sure there were more. PLEASE make him read more rather than checking down. 5 years of that was enough.

I like Schaub, he played well, but we have got to convert in the red zone!

Thing is, Schaub actually eliminated 2 sacks (I saw two plays, one where he stepped up which basically gave him a extra second to throw the ball, and another where he stepped up again...this is pocket presence of course. Something Carr never learned.)

I am not too satisfied with giving up 2 sacks still, but it shows you that a QB with pocket presence does help out the Oline. Now only if we could get Spencer back.

Also Schaub will be on ESPN2 pretty soon...

My thoughts exactly, I was yelling for him to run, as from my view, it looked as if he could have ran for at least 5 yards before there would have been contact with anyone..Then when he forced it up and it was picked, well ... My guess is now that it was a learning experience and he won't be doing that again...

I am sure Kubiak isn't going to ignore that. It was his first start, I think he got excited and thought "I'd throw this one up there and let Andre go get it."

Its good he made some mistakes truthfully. I mean you never really learn something unless you learn it the hard way. So he'll make his mistakes...who knows though, throw that a bit higher and maybe Andre comes down with it.

At the same time is TD/INT ratio is 7/7 now I think. But he can only get better.

IMO, I don't think he forced the throw to Dre. I just think it was underthrown. If he'd had a little more air under the ball AJ would've had the advantage over the defender. A right handed QB rolling out to his left has to put extra umph into the throw in order to get it where he wants it.

It's a learning experience for Schaub. In the past it would've been run out of bounds for a sack or thrown past the line of scrimmage.:texflag:

Even the best QBs throw INTs and leave open men on the field. None of these guys are perfect.

I think his INT was the result of miscommunication between Schaub and AJ. It looked like he expected AJ to turn in, and AJ though he was going to put it in the back of the endzone. With more experience with each other, their timing will improve and that will be a TD in the future.

Schaub gave AJ a career day in just his first start. I'd cut him a little slack after such a great win. He will improve.

no kidding...I thought I saw a guy who is capable of making the pro bowl...the offense is still feeling each other out and struggled at moments but I thought that after Schaub got comfortable he really made great decisions and controlled the tempo of the game. One thing Carr never did well (well one more thing) is that he didn't sell his play fakes all that well. Schaub did a great job setting up that bomb. Carr seemed to think that big plays just happen out of thin air since he didn't really understand defenses nor was he good at selling the play fake.

I thought so too--he had some open field ahead of him--tucking and running shouldn't be the first option, but it is always there.

A question for the both of you.

Why is Schaub not allowed to make a mistake? Manning makes mistakes, Brady makes mistakes. All quarterbacks make mistakes. Why is he not allowed to make one?

Newsflash: Schaub is going to continue to make mistakes, along with making big plays.

LOL. Schaub is allowed to make mistakes. Everybody is.

But he better get in the film room this week & learn something from it.

I'm pretty sure that's what his point was.

Maybe some people just approach the game differntly.

I know the question wasn't directed towards me, but throwing picks in the red zone is a big no-no under any circumstance. It didn't cost us, and Schaub didn't let it affect his game. I didn't think it would. When he threw it, I was just like ehhhh....we'll get it back...

But nevertheless, it was not something that you just shrug your shoulders at and say "oh well, everyone does that"....Yes he'll continue to make mistakes, but that was a bad one...I know he won't continue to do that...

Schaub had a very good game and seems poised to get better. I like the fact that he doesnt panic and start scrambling when he is rushed. It's not about how fast you can get out of the pocket, its how well you can move WITHIN the pocket. I like how when he is flushed out of the pocket he doesnt do the Fresno Tuck and run like a little girl. He uses his footwork and keeps his eyes downfield.

As for the pick in the end zone, AJ is almost as much to blame on that one as Schaub. Schaub had single coverage and went for the jump ball. AJ slipped and lost sight of it and the KC player made the play. Also remember that AJ fumbled on a promising drive or Schaub's numbers would have been better. AJ had a career day but still could have been better, just like Schaub. Lets all be happy with what we saw because we saw better QB in Schaub's 1st game than we did in 5 years of the loser YKW's play.

Pile of dog crap >>> Carr

If the ball was a foot or two higher, this would likely not be an issue today.:texflag:

Agreed. I keep hearing Kubiak say in these pressers, "It's how we respond". Matt just seems to have already prepared himself mentally for mistakes and successes before they happen and is therefore better suited to handle them.

Football is a game of inches.

Almost doesn't count.

Ask the Tennessee Titans.

I guess my point is this, you've said it was a bad mistake/decision or whatever you might want to call it, but if the ball was thrown a bit higher and Dre made the catch would you still be questioning it today. I doubt it.:shades:

I think people are reading to much into this "mistake" on the Schaub end-zone interception. It looked to me like Schaub threw the ball up expecting Andre to come back to it, as if Andre ran the wrong route or Schaub was expecting the wrong route.

I don't expect it to be an on-going mistake that we have to ponder at the end of every game.

My $0.02

What I'm saying is that football is a game of inches. You can't afford to "almost" get it done. A couple inches off is a mistake.

People abuse the O-line around here, and I've never once heard, "well if McKinney would have moved over one inch he'd have blocked that guy", or "If Chester Pitts would have had his hand a couple inches inside he wouldn't have gotten called for the hold"...

A mistake is a mistake. What Matt did won't be harped on, because he knows it was a bad mistake. They'll probably talk about it briefly and move the hell on....

But none the less, it's something he needs to correct because that kind of mistake can really bite you.

The interception seemed to be a miscommunication. Maybe he forced it a bit or maybe he was testing his WR, I dont know, but I do know that it was not an errant throw. Even with that interception, Matt made alot of good decisions during that game.

Matt called it a bad decision out of his own mouth. Go to the the main site and watch the press conference.

You don't roll out to your left as a right handed QB, and throw a jump ball in the end zone when your are that close to the goal line. Period.

If you make that throw, you need to make darn sure you are putting it where if your guy isn't catching it, no one is.

Even a tipped ball in that close of quaters can be disasterous. When you throw jump balls down field it's different because everyone is so spread out. That close to the goal line is not the the best time for that throw. I don't see where this mindset is coming from that that throw wasn't a mistake. It was a bad pass, and he could have made a better decision.

Having said all that, I don't think it's anything to even remotely be worried about. He won't do that again.

I dont know why everyone is trying so hard to disagree with xtruroyaltyx.

Schaub made a mistake. It might have been a miscommunication, it could have been anything, but he threw a pick in the redzone, which is a mistake.

It's not a big deal as long as he learns from it. You have to take care of the ball, especially in the redzone.

I agree that Schaub played a really good game. I was really surprised at how well he played in just his first start with us.

I don't see where this mindset is coming from that that throw wasn't a mistake.

Oh, it was a bad decision for sure, but my point was that it was not an errant throw. He did not seem to be pressured enough to effect his decision so that leads me to believe he was inaccurate or there was a miscomunication. It was a bad pass overall because there is good coverage on the play and we are just approaching the redzone. However, it was early in the first regular season game start of Schuab's career and AJ was in single coverage in the endzone. I think he just got excited. It is not as if he read the defense completely incorrectly and made that sort of error. Granted, he could have made a much better decision.

He is only 26 with limited NFL Regular Season playing time, he is going to make mistakes.

great post. i hold AJ as much to blame for that interception as Schaub. AJ lost balance and it was meant to be a jumpball.

risky throw? sure.

inaccurate throw? yes it was as it should have been deeper in the endzone.

wrong throw? no. he got single coverage in the end zone with a size mismatch. just poor execution....ugh i used that word.

it was the right throw but neither guy (AJ OR MS) made good plays so it failed.

Because good players correct mistakes.

Matt is a smart QB. He won't throw a pick like that anymore.

he might throw another interception like that for the sole reason that shot happens and nobody's perfect. I just think he will keep them to a minimum and learn from his mistakes and improve on them over time.

the more I think about his performance, the more optimistic I am about his long term growth. to come in like this and take over a team is a gargantuan task and he seems to have embraced the challenge and done his due diligence to make sure things work out here in Houston. His humility and the fact that he wasn't happy about his performance or the offense in general, tells me that he wants to win and win now. Love this guy.

So you're saying absolutely, positively that he will NOT throw a pick in the endzone the rest of this season? That's a pretty bold statement, but as arrogant as you are, I ain't that surprised.

Hope you're not wrong though.

(cuz if you are, you'll probably dwell on it like that 2nd string Panther QB does.:))

That's debatable...

You admit that it was a risky throw early in this same post I quoted...

Risky throws in the red zone aren't really what I'd call the "right" throw...

Matt Schaub himself called the throw a "poor decision"....those are his exact words...

Personally I don't think he should have made that throw at all...Especially not the way he made it....There wasn't any real pressure on him and he could have just scrambled for a couple positive yards or stopped and stepped into his throw rather than throwing it on the run...

A.J could have probably shown more effort, but that one was on Matt.

The second paragraph pretty much sums it up for me too.

No, that's not what I said.

Matt is not going to make that same mistake. He may or may not make another mistake that leads to an INT in the redzone, but he will not make that same mistake he made on that INT....Yeah, I'm pretty confident about that...

That's a bit snippy...

I know. He'll make sure the ball's higher next time.:shades:

I don't have a problem with giving playmakers room to make plays. Both on Matt Schaub's end and Andre's end.

They are both capable of hooking up on that pass.

Doesn't make it a smart decision.

because we were approaching field goal range, an argument could be made that he should thrown it away. however, my point is that if he makes a better throw (one deeper in the endzone where its pretty much only AJ can catch it or he is going to be able to break up any potential interception) the play won't result in a turnover and your taking a chance in the endzone or interference call with the ball placed at the 1. it was a bad throw but i think he made the right decision to throw it if he intended to throw it in the back of the endzone. it just came up woefully short.....next time he does an Esiasonesque playaction fake that had my father smiling from ear to ear and he hits AJ for a nearly 80yard touchdown....just so damn refreshing.

im sold but you are correct in that Schaub isn't happy with his performance. he wants to get better and eliminate mistakes. reality is that if you take chances you are going to make mistakes...just try and eliminate them or overcome them as a team when they happen

J/K, good post.

I am curious as to what you thought he would say? I threw a perfect pass and AJ did not come back to the ball, if he would have come back to the ball it would not have been an interception. Leon can't do it all by himself.

A good team leader puts all the blame on himself and does not throw a teammate under the bus no matter who was at fault.

I don't blame Andre. He would have had to change directions and come back to the ball through the DB.

Schaub made a bad throw.

Well Kubiak said it was a poor decison too. If that counts for anything.

If you look at the press conference after the game you may not have written this post. Both he and Kubiak aknowledge that it was a mistake on his part...

But it's not that big a deal...It's not something that should be held against him...He was trying to make a play...You want your playmakers making plays...

But at the same time he needs to be smarter when we're that close to the endzone...

the emboldened is the bottom line. 3 is better than 0 any day of the week.

This afternoon on Kubiaks show on 610, he mentioned the coaching staff should take some of the blame for the INT in the endzone due to the fact they have stressed having Matt throw the ball when AJ is one on one with a DB. He should be able to win that battle every time. Matt did make a bad throw, and moved on from it. In the past the offense would have tanked it in after something like that. I was floored to see how well Matt sold the bootleg like that. By the time KC realized he still had the ball, he was out there all alone. If he would have squared up to throw the ball, it probably would have been a TD, it was just a hair under thrown and AJ couldn't come back for it.

For Matt's 3rd or 4th start in the NFL he did pretty good, and we got the W.

Carolina on the road is going to be a good test for us. I can't wait until Sunday!:fans:
