Texans' Carr to Panthers unlikely

Memo to the David Carr Fan Club:

Don’t get your hopes too high on the possibility of Carr landing with the Panthers. Yeah, the Houston quarterback is on the trading block right now. But don’t look for the Panthers, or any other team, to want to give up very much for a guy that didn’t have much success in five seasons with the Texans and still is carrying two years of a big contract.

Unless there’s a trade where Carr agrees to re-work his contract significantly, there probably won’t be a trade. A source close to Carr said it’s more likely the Texans simply will release the quarterback in a few days.

Oakland is next on Carr’s list because the job is open and Carr and new Raiders coach Lane Kiffin once roomed together while Carr was in college at Fresno State and Kiffin was a graduate assistant.

He will not get released until June 1st. If he does before hand then I want Rick Smith's head on a platter or skewer with a $7 draft at Reliant.

If a trade doesn't happen either before the draft or within a week or two after, what makes you think one is likely before June 1st? Under the new rule, they can get the cap effect prior to June 1st if they want.

It was my understanding that it was a one time exception under the new CBA last year.

I hsve this strange feeling he will end up in Cleveland. I live there, and get to hear about how awful Cleveland's quarterback situation is: Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson - it's a scary duo. Word around here is that they might be drafting Peterson and looking for another QB. Of course this would be disastrous for Carr as the Cleveland OL is probably worse than the Texans'

I think they will release him, and very soon at that. They want to give him a legit shot somewhere. If they wait until June, he will have no chance at all for a starting spot. I mean I really don't care, but I don't think they want that kind of reputation among the leagues players. Things like this don't happen in a vacuum, and you have to look at the bigger picture sometimes.

It was my understanding that it was a one time exception under the new CBA last year.

Regardless, they should at least hold on to him until after the draft. Team needs aren't completely static, and there may be trade opportunities around draft day that don't exist at the moment.

Each team is now allowed to designate two players as June 1st cuts and cut them earlier.

If that is the case wasn't there a window when that designation had to be made? For some reason before the end of March is in my memory. Will do some looking around.

If my understanding was wrong, as it does look, then yes he should be released sooner than later as it is the right thing to do due to him being an upstanding person in my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carr knows where he wants to go but with the bloated salary feels like he is holding the cards right now. He isn't going to rework his contract unless hes going to the team of his choice...and if he doesnt get that team, he can just wait for his release and sign with them as a FA while still raking in a ton of money from the Texans.

I agree though its in his best interest to go now...just wonder who will actually give up a pick for him.

He'll get released way before then. The mini-camps and OTAs start in May, and I seriously doubt they will want him anywhere around. He'd be such a distraction, it wouldn't even be funny.

I got to take note of this quote from Rick Smith at the presser today.

Smith

(on the negotiations with Atlanta GM Rich McKay and the status of Texans QB David Carr) “I’ll address the latter question first. First of all, I think everybody up here and everybody in this organization appreciates the contributions that David Carr made to this franchise and to this city. We are working with his representatives and with David to find a place for David to continue his NFL career. Matt is our starting quarterback and we’re trying to help David find another place. We’re trying to trade him in the next couple of days. We feel good about the prospects; David is obviously a talented football player and has value, and I think that value is recognized over the league. So I don’t think we’ll have a problem with that and I think he will be excited about a new opportunity, and we’re hopeful that he will continue have an NFL career and be successful.

Well Hell Rick baby! If you can manage to somehow dump Carr's contract and get a draft pick out of it, you'd be da man! If you can do that, I pity the poor soul that even thinks about criticizing you for about the next 3 years, because I will be all over him like flypaper.

I don't think you can pull it off. Show me that you weren't talking out of your *****.:challenge

I hope Carr the best

Rik Smith- Hey David, can you restructure your contract so we can trade you
David Carr- **** you!!

Here's an interesting tidbit from nfl.com talking about how he will be released, not traded. There is also an interesting discussion about how much money this moved saved the team.

Houston shopped him, found no takers, and now, with a new quarterback with a hefty contract on its payroll, the Texans have no room for Carr.

It is only a matter of time until the Texans release him, another quarterback drafted No. 1 that failed to pan out.

Where Carr surfaces is an intriguing subplot. It doesn't look like Oakland, which expressed no interest in trading for Carr and is considering drafting LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell. But it also should be pointed out that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was on the Fresno State coaching staff when Carr starred there. If Kiffin wants Carr, it could change the Raiders' interest in him.

Minnesota, Detroit and Cleveland are searching for quarterbacks, and any could take a flyer on Carr. But there doesn't seem to be an obvious landing spot for Carr, at least not now. When and if he is released, the circumstances would change, and a team such as the Vikings would become even more intrigued. But only after Carr is released.

Wherever Carr lands, he will have a hard time trying to recoup the $6.75 million in base salary that he was scheduled to earn this season in Houston.

*Houston actually saves millions by ridding itself of Carr, switching two spots in the first round of the draft and surrendering its second-round pick this year.

Once Houston divorces Carr, the quarterback will count $2 million against the Texans' salary cap this season. But his $6.75 million base salary also will come off the Texans' books, meaning they will save $4.75 million against this year's salary cap.

Also, by dropping back two spots in the first round, the Texans will save another $2 million, and by trading its second-round pick, Houston will save another $4 million. All together, it's a financial boon -- much of it that will be used on Schaub's new contract.

What if we trade Carr and our 3rd round pick to Cleveland for their 2nd round pick (35th overall). That would give us another quality stater. What do you guy think?

Charlie Frye would do just fine, with a little more time behind center, and AD in the backfield. Anderson has shown that he can be "competitve" with little prepration. I think Cleveland's QB situation is fine.

Frye may not be the answer, but he'll give them time to work it out.

If noone is willing to make a trade is it worth releasing Carr? Will we save enough in cap room to warrent a release? IMHO I would think that if we can't get something decent for him, keep him and maybe have him in the competition for starter at QB with Rosenfels and Schaub, neither of which is a proven starter. Atleast then we know we have QB committee, will deff. confuse the hell out of defenses if we have several different styles of qbs. Just a thought anyone have any other ideas

I seriously Doubt Carr would be released. If Minnesota, Oakland, KC or any team called, and offered a draft pick, I think we'd take it before we just let him go.

I also feel like we'd take whatever scrub those teams are willing to give up... try to use those to acquire picks, or just fill out trading camp, or just find someone with a chip on his shoulder.

David would then count as $4mill against our cap(He's scheduled to earn $5.75 million in '07, $6 million in '08), if we trade him.

David would count as a $2million against the cap, if we designate him as a June1st cut.

So, in my mind, the only way we just cut him, is if we got no offers at all on our 2002 #1 overall selection.

Wow . . good find, Porky. I never thought about the angle where one of the purposes of this trade would be to save money. I was wondering about the cap implications of Schaub's contract. It be interesting to hear aj's take on this.

No room for Carr anymore. The Texans have their man now.

Just let it go. Carr will not be in camp this year.

Schefter may have good contacts for rumors but he is ****e for cap knowledge. Moving down 2 spots may save 2 mil on the contract but it sure won't save 2 mil on the cap this year. Similarly, the Texans may not have a contract for a 2nd rounder, but it won't be a savings of $4 mil on this cap and will as always mean someone else will get paid to fill the spot. He makes it out like the Texans will save $10.75 on the cap by releasing Carr and doing the trade which is absurd.

Reword that to say "if we got no offers at all on our 2002 #1 overall selection's contract" . . . and it might make more sense.

About a month ago, I thought there would be no way that they would just outright release him, simply because . . to do so would be an admission that they made a big mistake in extending him. Well, McNair, in so many words, did just that today at Schaub's press conference.

Frankly, I will be stunned if he's not released.

Point for those of you who think Carr has no trade value.

Just look at all the threads about what fans of other teams think as well as the national media.

They think it was entirely the O line's fault.

Hee! Hee!

Our FO doesn't have to talk up Carr's trade value.

The rest of the country is doing it for them.

What exactly did McNair say about extending Carr last year? I haven't seen his comments. Thanks.

McNair

(on if it was a mistake to extend David Carr’s contract in 2006) “Yes, we’ve made mistakes-not just there, that’s not the only place”

So much for the he didn't admit the mistake crowd.

There may be something to that but I don't know if it's enough to counter the knowledge that Carr will absolutely be released if these other teams just wait long enough.

Hate that this is how it went down for Carr. I wish him well though.

Is Oakland out of the question? Or is JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn the QBs they are looking at?

With the extra cash savings by releasing or trading Carr, wouldn't that make it more possible to resign Leach??? I really hope they resign him!

basically we are getting the short end of the carr deal and that's the big mistake that we did last year...oh well...time to move on

So much for the he didn't admit the mistake crowd.
I would point out that kubiak is the one who wanted to reclaim Carr and told McNair to pay him the 8 mil bonus............this team has been a colassal coaching and management mess from inception............the common thread.............McNair lets it go on.

saving? try thinking about the amortization you'll pay for him now.........say hello to dead money on the cap friend. This was as a dumb a move as passing on a QB last yr. Incredible mismanagement rivaling the Lions.

I'd rather have Shaub and Mario than VY and any other DE prospect in the nation.

There may be something to that but I don't know if it's enough to counter the knowledge that Carr will absolutely be released if these other teams just wait long enough.

But that's the point. If we release him and multiple teams want him, then they lose control of the situation. It starts being a combination of bidding war and Carr choosing where he wants to go. If you really like Carr and think there are other bidders, do you want it to go to that point or do you want to lock him up before he has the power to go wherever he wants?

<I was about to make a used carr salesman joke here and refrained. i expect to get some rep for NOT making that joke.>

my thoughts exactly...he is bought and paid for already...just wait till last moment unless he agress to make his contract more trade friendly and market value

if he isnt willing to help us and restructure, why should the Texans be willing to help him and release him soon so he can find a home. It goes both ways. I say, play hardball and see if we can milk a 4th Round Pick in 2008. If no one bites June 1st...bye bye Davey and he can go to a place of his choosing and earn his keep for once

No, I'm old enough to have seen incredible mismanagement and this ain't it.

Sometimes you make a decision, realize you were wrong, and have to do what you can to fix the situation. That's just life. No one always makes the right decisions. Incredible mismanagement is making a decision, not being able to admit you were wrong, and then making more and more and more bad decisions in an attempt to patch the original bad decision and all the follow on bad decisions.

This team has now admitted the mistake and has taken steps to address it.

To me this is doubletalk to Carr and his people...
Translation: Either David Carr is a stand up guy and is willing to rework his contract with another team so we can trade him and get a draft pick
OR we will cut his ass if we have to.
Football is a business.

I hope that Rick Smith is too smart to release Carr before the draft. There are several teams that have several holes to fill including QB. If any of these teams project Carr as a starting QB in this league they will trade for Carr in order to fill the additional holes via the draft. Lets say Detriot believes Carr is a player near the quality of Quinn and that QB is the biggest area of need. They also need to upgrade several other positions such as WR and DB.

Why would they not trade for Carr before the draft in order to then be able to Draft AD in the first and having a shot at a highly rated DB in round two? They would not pass up Quinn in hopes they could get Carr as a FA. It would be worth a 4th round pick for Detriot to get so many holes filled in the draft.

And if you say my estimation of a teams opinion of Carr is too high to say he is near Quinn's status. A team like Miami or Minnesota could take Carr in order to draft their highest projected player such as a DE or DL in the first round, and the ability to take a highly rated DB or LB in the 2nd round instead of having to use the pick on Stanton or Kolb.

In respect to Carr's contract being to high; even if we trade Carr for a 4th or 5th round pick and we still pay 2 million of Carr's salary as part of the trade it will be better than releasing him inwhich we would have to pay back the 4 million signing bonus and not getting a 4th or 5th round pick.

Exactly. Thas the leverage the Texans FO have over Carr now.
Meaning he's gotta be willing to rework that contract so the Texans can make a deal with another team. My instincts say Minnesota would be a great place for Carr.

Okay. This is what Rick Smith says yesterday.

I thought that was pretty strong and figured he might have some sort of deal in place.

This is McClain's article from today's paper:

If general manager Rick Smith is unable to trade quarterback David Carr, the Texans will release him.

Carr could be released or traded before the weekend is over. Neither side wants to drag it out.

"David's done right by us, and we want to do right by him," Texans owner Bob McNair said Thursday.

None of the quotes from the Texans say they are going to release him this weekend.

And the quotes in the articles say that the Texans respected what Carr did and do right by Carr, none of those were made in the context of giving Carr an early release.

Nor would it make sense for the Texans to say to a journalist that they are going to release Carr before the end of the weekend if they are still thinking they can trade him.

There is value to other teams to have a veteran QB in place before the draft.

Just thinking out loud here. Did I miss something in the press conference suggesting that Carr was going to get an early release????

Only to the Casserly GM types. Nobody wants Carr with that salary apparently. I may be wrong but Rick Smith is probably not yet a great negotiator as this is his first off season of wheeling and dealing on his own.

I think this is probably true. I think Smith is a good evaluator of talent from the guys he brought in off the street last season, but negotiating trades with other GM's probably isn't his strong suit yet. Just like Kubiak made mistakes as a rookie head coach last season, Smith will make mistakes as the GM.

My money is that Smith is going to regret what he said in that news conference regarding trading David.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see a GM dumb enough to give up a draft pick to take Carr's current contract. If Smith pulls it off, McNair should give him the job for life.

Kind of off topic here, but does anyone have the whole rumor article on espn? It has something on Carr to Miami. It's insider only. Thanks

I disagree with you. they may want Carr to renegociate his deal or something like that but, if he is released there will be a few teams after him, the salary will have a lot to do with that.

A team who does not want this will trade for him to ensure that they get him.
