Lets play GM.

ok so lots of fa's have signed and combine is done. lets limit the moves to 5( FA' and draft) lets try to be as reasonable as possible.

1)sign ken hamlin.
2)draft marshawn lynch.
3)draft a wr in 2nd (hill, meachem, rice)

man, i only see 1 reasonable FA pick up. thats not too good.

Draft- LaRon Landry, Daymeion Hughes / Marcus McCauley, Ryan Harris in Rounds 1-3
FA- Travis Henry, Tyrone Calico

This could get us 7-9 or 8-8 IMO  (Oh yeah, & start Shane Rosenfels )

Draft- 1)Laron Landry FS LSU -2)Demarcus "Tank" Johnson DT NC State -3)Ryan Harris/Tony Ugoh OT (alls I know is that we need one)

Free Agency- Donte Stallworth WR & Travis Henry RB

This scenario would give Kubiak his "playmakers" on offense via FA.

We desperately need a ball hawking FS and Landry looks like the second coming of Brian Dawkins imo.

The "Tank" is a beast and I would love to watch he and Mario tear it up again like they did in college! I know its just a stat but he did like 42 reps on the bench at his combine workout and we desperately need some inside push on our d-line.

As far as my 3rd round picks i honestly don't know too much about either guy but Kubs & Co. did well finding OL talent in the third last year so why not go for it again. I would use our 4th as well to take the best OL that fell to the 2nd day.

Finally there's something worth talking about again!!!
GO Kubes & Co.!!!!:texans:

Okay, all kidding aside, I'll make a run at this.

1) Sign Hamlin - FS position solved.

2) Sign Stallworth - #2 WR position solved.

3) Trade down with NY Jets - In predicting the draft, we have to make some assumptions. Assuming AP is there at #8 & the Jets covet him, would they be willing to give up their 1st (#25) & their two 2nd round picks (#37 & #59)? For this exercise, I'm going to assume they would.

4) Select Lawrence Timmons (OLB) @ #25 - Assuming Chris Houston is off the board.

5) Select Ryan Kalil (C) @ #37, Ben Grubbs (OG) @ #39, & Kareem Brown (DT) @ #59 - I included picks #37 & #59, since they were a part of step 3.

As a side note, looking at all the teams picking ahead of our 2nd round pick, only Baltimore & Tampa Bay look like a center would be very high on their list of needs. Assuming that's the case, there's a real good chance that Kalil could be there for us in the 2nd round. But, you never know.

FA's
1) Carlisle, OL from Denver
2) Hamlin, S from Seattle
3) Henry, RB from Tennessee

Draft
1) Okoye, DT
2) Staley or Ugoh, LT
3) Stanton or Kolb, QB
4) Bennett or Bain, CB
5) Simpson or Black, OLB
6) Sepulveda, P
7) Trannon or Rabb, WR

Also, we need to resign Dayne and Leach.

Of course there are many other options, but I would be happy if it went this way. JMHO!

1. Landry FS
2. Bush RB
3. Stanton QB
4. Pitcock DT
5. Henry RB
6. Falani WR
7. Bo Smith CB

sign FA WR Stalworth

FA's
1) Carlisle, OL from Denver

I forgot about Carlisle. Imo, a free agent haul of Hamlin, Stallworth, & Carlisle would be a very successful free agency year for the Texans.

Going back to my original post, I'd pass on Grubbs & select Michael Bush with the 39th pick.

I would trade DC and my #8 to Cleveland for their #3. I'd turn around and trade the #3 to some team (Washington, perhaps) for a slew of 2, 3 and 4th round picks. With those, I'd draft:

Kevin Kolb, Justin Blalock, Ryan Harris, Desmond Bishop, Michael Coe, and David Ball.

In free agency, I would make a serious run at Ken Hamlin and Donte Stallworth.

The Texans don't seem to understand the importance of having depth on the offensive line. UNTIL they begin to solidify the offense (o-line, specifically), they're not going to have much success against anybody. Drafting Blalock and Harris will help to remedy this problem. It can't be about 'win now' for Rick Smith, he must look toward the future if he wants to build this team into a winner. He must also alleviate the cap situation. Good Luck, Rick.

FA I sign Stallworth.

Draft:

I trade back with NE acquiring their 2 first rounders for our 1st.
I trade David Carr to Oak for their 3rd, but attempt to take them like they took us for Buchanon.

24. Chris Houston
28. Ryan Kalil
39. Brandon Merriwether
Oak 3rd.: Manuel Rodriguez - OG - TT
Hou 3rd.: Kareem Brown
4th round: Dan Brazun - DE - Central Mich.
5th round: Dallas Sartz - OLB - USC
6th round: Garrett Wolfe
7th round: Justin Medlock - PK - UCLA

FA I sign Stallworth.

4th round: Kareem Brown
5th round: Sidney Piscoable (sp) FS
6th round: Garrett Wolfe
7th round: Justin Medlock - PK - UCLA

2 questions.

1-where is the 3rd round picks of ours and oaklands?
2-with drafting meriweather and houston...why the FS in the 5th?

I tried to veer from FA to help us build through youthful talent that we can afford. Sage takes over at QB. We add a potential #1 CB, an anchor for our offensive line. A very good cover FS who can hit, a powerful OG, a HUGE pass rushing DT who can stop the run, a pass rushing specialist DE, another studly USC LB who is an emotional leader, a quick scat back who has always produced, and finally we get a new PK who has done very well this offseason and has a great leg.

Tell me this does not meet our needs. No qb this draft because none are worth drafting. This draft builds a team that we can simply plug our franchise QB into later. This is how top teams are built, and this is what I would do.

o The signing of Ahman Green to a 4-year deal indicates fairly clearly to me that we will not be hunting for a RB in round 2+.
o I doubt AD falls to 1.08.
o I doubt Kalil falls to 2.07.

So, we have either Levi Brown or LaRon Landry flying up our board at 1.08. What would the (simple, no-trade) draft scenarios resemble?

1/LaRon Landry
2/Joe Staley OR CB
3/Kareem Brown OR Ryan Harris
Note that the order matters -- in other words, if we pick Staley, thereby addressing OT in Rd 2, then we don't need to go Ryan Harris in Rd 3, and so can address DT.

OR.....
1/Levi Brown
2/CB (McCauley, Ross, Hughes) or S (Griffin, Merriweather)
3/Kareem Brown

Thoughts on Kolb in the 3rd. It could happen from a marketing perspective: UH homer makes good as Texan. Nice story. It could not happen from an opportunity cost standpoint: pick Kolb and forego other positions AND a better QB next draft. But I digress, back to the scenarios.

The question is not "should we draft an OT in Rd 1?". Everyone knows our line needs depth, and we continue to look for our left OT. Rather the question is/should be: "Is LaRon Landry a better FS compared to other safeties thanLevi Brown is better than other tackles?" It is about incremental benefit and opportunity cost, IMHO.

We are missing some key information. If we the prognosticators had better information regarding the status of Spencer's recovery, we would be better able to predict the direction of the draft. And so would other teams. Frankly, I would be very surprised if we hear anything re Spencer's knee/leg prior to the draft. Who we pick at 1.08 will speak volumes. If Spencer recovers, we have our starting tackles, and can address depth at OL later in the draft.

Anyway, it has been an exciting NFL weekend.

I'm sorry, I just have to revel at this greatness.

Before you nominate yourself you have to speak to NE's motivation for making the move, otherwise you are more bean counter than visionary. Professionally speaking of course.

New England trades Houston both their 1sts and Tom Brady so they can select Brady Quinn at #8. :sarcasm:

3) Stanton or Kolb, QB
4) Bennett or Bain, CB
5) Simpson or Black, OLB

7) Trannon or Rabb, WR

I like it, but we will have to see if any of the decent WRs or DBs are left in 2nd and slide the rest back.

Nice draft,YTF......Shouldn't Texans get an extra 4th from Pats to move up? Who is NE targeting if they decide to move up? How about a OT instead of Ramirez? Lance Z on 610 radio says Houston is only good in press coverage and not in zone plus he has poor ball skills ; is there another CB that could go there?

FA signings...Green, Hamlin,Carlisle, Leach

You made some great points. It would benefit everyone but the Texans to publically discuss Spencer's recovery status. This is what makes mock draft's so exciting because we really never know what's going on. We can only speculate on what's going to happen next. Hopefully the Texans decide to pickup 2 quality O-linemen reguardless.

I've been a big supporter of both Landry and Kalil. We'll be lucky if kalil makes it to us..i'll definitly agree with that...

I've been looking at a lot of mock drafts. one site where people can post their own is on footballsfuture.com

I don't know how many I just looked at that 1)has us selecting Alan Branch and 2)has minnesota selecting Laron Landry

Do we need to be worried that Landry won't even be there at 8? I saw one where Denver traded up for him. Minny taking him in a lot of mocks. and even one where Arizona took him.

I would be happy with Landry or DL, OL. However, OL worth picking at 8th would be Thomas and he won't be there and Brown would be reach. So, Landry or DL. If Quinn available at 8th? Kube may take him IMO. I would like for us to take Stanton or Kolb at 3rd(more likely Kolb, I think Stanton would be gone in the 2nd).

If Kalil makes it to us YES! But, most of the mock I see him going late 1st or early 2nd.

1. Landry
2. Kalil if not Staley
3. Kolb

or
1. DL
2. Marriweather or Staley
3. Kolb

I know we need more help at CB and LT and so on but, looking at current situation of the Texans, we need to draft QB for the future now to develop(it takes a few years to develop QB IMO).

GO TEXANS!!

Houston's ball skills need to improve some, but he is a top CB. Revis is my other choice at CB if you want a shut down guy. I don't think any of the OT's are value and would be anything for us more than what we have. I haven't figured out who NE would target, that is why I am not GM yet. I will be soon, but not yet. Lance Z also isn't the Kiper of draft prospects.

Okay I'll try this again...

Free Agency-
I'm not sure about receiver...Bryant or Stallworth...both have their 'problems'?
-Ahman Green-good call smith
-I'd sign Cooper Carlisle OL from Denver
-I'd sign Ian Scott DT from Chicago

That addresses RB, DT, and OG.

Draft-

**Draft Day trade-I would then Trade David Carr, our 2nd, 4th and MAYBE our 5th round pick to Oakland for their 2nd and 3rd round picks.***(we basically trade carr for their 3rd rounder and maybe throw in our 4/5th...then we give them our 4/5th to swap picks in the 2nd.***

#8-Laron Landry FS
#33-Ryan Kalil C
#65-Ryan Harris OT
#72-Kevin Kolb QB
(5th?) 6th and 7th- BPA ..WR,LB,CB,

oakland would then with carr as their QB..select Peterson in 1st and Rice or Bowe..WR in 2nd OR select Calvin Johnson in 1st and Michael Bush in 2nd...they would also have an extra 4th and maybe 5th rd picks...they might like that

What if we were to trade Carr for a pick next year? say to oakland ....if they'd only be willing to give us a 4th rounder for him this year....what about we trade him to them for a 3rd rounder next year?

or our 5th round pick and David Carr this year for a 2nd round pick next year?..i'd jump all over that

EDIT: or we switch second round picks this year, give them Carr....and then next year they give us a 3rd round pick

this is belichick's kind of situation. i dont think they have any real motivation to move those picks, knowing they can use those to retool on the cheap. they might move a 1st + 2nd or 3rd to get higher, but not both.

I don't think they'd trade up with anyone, either. They've got a need at LB, not so much anymore that they signed Thomas, and slightly less of a need at CB. I wouldn't be surprised if they took Posluszny/Willis and Daymeion Hughes with 24 and 28. They're not parting with those.

NE is in a good situation...they are sticking with those 2 guys.
