2007 Weak-Mediocre Draft with only 3 or 4 Blue-Chippers ?

nunusguy

Hall of Fame
Last year represented one of the most talented Drafts in atleast the last 10 years. But this year may be just the opposite ?
Jamarcu Russell has one of the most powerful arms to come down the pike in
some time and his upside is steep.
And AD is an awesome back who may be the most "pure runner" to enter the
pros in atleast 5 years, though injuries are a concern.
And probaly the most complete and safest player in the Draft is WR Calvin Johnson, who is very comparable in some ways to the best player on our team, AJ.
But after that, where's the Blue-chippers ?
Joe Thomas seems to be getting high ratings in all the mocks, but perhaps thats an indication of the weakness of this years talent and the importance of his position ?
And would Brady Quinn be drafted higher than #4 among QBs last year ?
The strength of this Draft appears to be in the DLine, but with no true steller
performers among that group IMO ?

no, joe thomas is the best tackle to come out in many years.

there's some can't-miss once-in-a-lifetime players in this draft. calvin johnson, adrian peterson, joe thomas, amobi okoye, brady quinn...

I like how you try to slip in "your players" okoye/quinn :shades:

my players? okay.

okoye is the most physically talented DT to enter the draft since warren sapp. brady quinn is clearly a 5-star prototypical QB. if i wanted to be a fanboy i'd say adam carriker or paul soliai or something.

I know your just praying Brady "Kastofsna Man Crush" Quinn falls to the fish @ #9 :winky:

personel wise I don't see him really any higher rated than a certain David Carr was in 02. how'd that work out :aikido:

regarding okoye thats all based on potential. Alan Branch should be rated higher based on his production & considered more of a "cant miss prospect" the jury is still out on Amobi (playing weight/position etc...) :bubble:

Name: Amobi Okoye
College: Louisville Number: 91
Height: 6-2 Weight: 287
Position: DT Pos2:
Class/Draft Year: Sr/2007
40 Time: 5.03 40 Low: 4.95 40 High: 5.10
Projected Round: 1 Stock:
Rated number 2 out of 145 DT's 12 / 2339 TOTAL

branch isn't even as good at NT as ngata last year, hardly a can't-miss guy. but as a 3-tech, okoye is the best since sapp.

Beerlover, let kastofsna have Quinn. We'll take Okoye. :ok:

I know, a lot of people on this MB think we should get Branch, but I just don't think he fits what the Texans are looking for. Branch is a big "space eating" NT suited to the 3-4. Okoye, on the other hand, is a "pass rushing" DT suited to the 4-3. I think there is much more "upside" to Okoye than Branch. If the Texans take Branch in the 1st, I'll be surprised. But, if it comes down to Branch or Quinn, I'd rather they took Branch. JMHO!

I pretty much agree with you overall assement of this draft class. I think there will be a lot of tallent in rounds two through three. After that it's pretty much which way you like your warts. If the Texans hit on three out of seven this draft, I will be pleased.

Okoye will be a beast in the NFL, it will take the 19 yr old some time to develop though. He has the same intangibles of a Tommie Harris, if the league is lucky he will play like him. Would be nice to see him play next to Mario.

Can't say I agree with you on this Beerlover.

Carr received barely a fraction of the acclaim and attention that Quinn has received.

Quinn has been hyped as the next great QB for years now while Carr had one big season.

Perhaps Quinn has lauded so long that people are just jaded towards him already.

I think Quinn has a long fruitful career ahead of him, probably not one of the all time greats, but a winner and a long term starter.

I think his top two inches make him a great prospect not neccesarily the measureables.

This is a much weaker draft class than last years, but then again last years draft was very deep. There is some depth in this draft class though, as others have mentioned there are some very good DL prospects, also there is quite a few quality TEs in this draft as well (Olsen, Miller, Newton, Chandler, Patrick, Spaeth, Herian).

These TEs aren't freaks of nature like Vernon Davis was last year, but they are reliable targets for the QB to find in the passing game. There is also some good depth at LB with guys like Willis, Blades, Siler, Davis, Timmons, Posluszny, Beason, Alexander, Latimer, etc. There aren't nearly as many "can't miss" guys this year as there was last year, but overall it's a middle of the pack draft.

Yeah and the o-line guys aren't bad I like Aaron Sears and Ugoh. I mean they're crdible canidates to come in and make a contribution on someones o-line. They just can't play on the outside left edge at a high level. They're great prospects though. I mean if we didn't have Pitts and Blailock fell to us in round two I think he'd make a heck of a left gaurd or right tackle...we just don't need one.

Do I need to start a new list of crazy things you've said this year? Quinn won't even be the first qb taken, and he is once in a lifetime?

I swear, if i could put you and hulk75 in a cage match to the death.......

Well since they're both in a cage ... never mind .

to be honest, none of the QB prospect in this draft excites. If AD is selected before the Texans then I really want to see Kubiak and company take the best DT or DE available (Branch, Okoye, Anderson, etc.,

So if Peterson is gone, I hope we take Quinn!

We have taken D line the previous three drafts lets go for something else?

Now that is logic for you! Tom Brady was the 199th player taken in the 2000 draft. How many QBs were taken ahead of Tom Brady? Lets see: Pennington, Carmazzi, Redman, Martin, Bulger, Wynn. That would be 6. How many QBs were taken ahead of Dan Marino in 83? Let's see: Elway, Blackledge, Kelly, Eason, O'Brien. Granted there were a few all-time greats ahead of Marino, but that would be 5. Yeah, if you aren't selected first, there is no way you can end up being a once in a lifetime talent.

The draft is like going to Vegas.

We won't know for several years if kastofsna is correct.

The 2002 draft wasn't bad in terms of talent, maybe in terms of talent that the Texans ended up drafting but because the Texans were so committed to the 3-4 defense it hurt our draft imho. Some of the players that we passed on later on in the draft include:

DeShaun Foster, Andre Gurode, Toniu Fonoti, LeCharles Bentley, Tank Williams, Clinton Portis, Will Witherspoon, Brian Westbrook, Chris Hope, Alex Brown, David Thornton, Randy McMichael, Aaron Kampman, Jermaine Phillips, Justin Hartwig.

That is just a quick list I saw, and doesn't even include anyone in the 1st round that we could have had such as Peppers, Levi Jones, Bryant McKinnie, Ed Reed or John Henderson. I think there is more than enough talent in this draft, it's just a matter of having good talent evaluation, which I feel our coaches have much more of now than the Capers and his bunch!

i would consider Quinn, at best, the 5th best QB to come out in the last two years... hardly "cant miss"

That is correct, but does not refute my statement.

The Texans drafted no D lineman in the first round in 2004. Pretty simple. Your post is pointless.

Jason Babin - OLB - Western Michigan

It is obvious you like to read your own posts despite the fact many times you just spew things for the sake of argument. :loser

Overall I wouldn't call this class weak, because I think it has some very good depth at certain positions. However, I do think this draft is lacking in the elite prospects department.....well, compared to last year's draft at least. Williams, Bush, Young, Ferguson, Hawk, Davis, Huff, and Leinart, tabbed as the 'Elite 8'. The only player I'd call elite is Calvin Johnson.......maybe Adrian Peterson and Joe Thomas.

Also, I'm sorry but why do posters sometimes refer to Adrian Peterson as 'AD'? I'm not sure what that stands for.

We drafted a DE, converted him to an OLB, and now he's a DE again. Thus, he was a DE in college and a DE in the pros.

No argument Captain Obvious, just facts. Babin was a DE in college, converted to a OLB in a 3-4 defense and now is a DE again.

I gotta go along with Rev on this one, because I followed the "Babin experiment" so closely during his time here in Houston under the Capers regime.
He was a DE in college and probably would have been, tops, a third-round pick if he was drafted to play as a 4-3 DE in the pros.
But Babin was identified by Capers and his DC Fangio as a classic "tweener"
who projected as having impressive upside as an OLB in their 3-4. And if IIRC,
they moved up in the Draft to secure Babin by way of the Titans trade because another 3-4 team also wanted to draft Babin to play the same position and not as a 4-3 lineman.
And I still think his best chance for success in the NFL is the position the Texans clearly drafted him to play, even though he's now back to his college
positon after the 2006 season for the first time in his 3-year NFL career.

I think a solid pick will be had for our first round selection even if we do trade down. I am hopeful that the lower round picks will be as fruitful as last year. I am hoping for a starter in F/A (corner) and 2 starters in draft. AP and Tony Ugoh (3rd round) my first choice. I am still conflicted on our 2nd round & should be more clear after the Carr decision and F/a. Wise choices and the injury bug crawling away would make for a much brighter 2007.

Stoops started Calling Adrian Peterson, All Day durring his pressers as a way of promoting him for the Heisman and aluding to the fact that he carried the ball so much for Oklahoma. AD= All Day.

I read`somewhere that his dad nicknamed him All Day to help instill work ethic in him. Might be wrong on that, though.

Actually, his mom named him that prior to birth as she said he was running all day in the womb. Also, whispered in his ear at birth that he would suffer at the hands of one Texas team only to turn around another Texas team and run it to the SB.:drunk: Well it could have happened that way.

TJ and Babin are career backups, the only real starters that we have on our d-line are Mario and Weaver. Forget the past drafts because we had a trunk monkey (Casserly) doing the drafts for us the previous years. Casserly goes off hearsay way too much, as many people do.

I think TJ has learned his lesson and is going to be quite improved and more productive. He was doing quite well before he was injured. Maybe not pro bowl caliber, but a LOT better than he ws with bad influences around him. I'm not impressed with Babin or Peek at all.
