I think I mentioned that earlier in the season I got some coaching films from the club and did a three-game study on him. Very raw at that point. Swallowed almost every fake. But gifted with abnormal speed and a real burst, thus able to run down ball carriers all over the field. But please, let's leave the official statistics to the people who have signed up for them."

That sounds like the exact opposite of what I've heard about Ryans' play. Can't say I really follow any one D player when I watch. Heck, I couldn't on TV much anyway. As far as the stats go, I have no idea. Don't know who the leader is or how close Ryans is, but he's one impressive rookie.

Other than that SI can still kiss my ***... I'm still stewing from the disrespect shown to the Rockets by them... With that said, who cares what SI has to say!!
 
To show what little he knows. One of the knocks on Ryan coming out, was he wasn't as fast as he should be (not abnormal speed), but makes his plays on football instincts not speed. Also I guess all those tackles I see him make on the field are just figments of my imagination. (Leads the NFL in total tackles 127, or Solo Tackles 104) If he wanted to blast the stat reference, he should have said something like, the stat for most tackles is misleading due to the fact that the Texans offense is so bad, he is on the field all the time. Thus he has more chances to make tackles.
 
What's up with that?!? How come Demeco's stats are phony but everyone else has real ones? Ridiculous!

Something else is going on here. I wonder if Demeco caused him to lose a fantasy game. :D :D :D
 
Maybe the media needs to bring him down, because he makes their comments of "the Texans don't know how to draft" look bad when our 2nd round selection leads the league.
 
How is a tackle a phony stat? He never really explains that. If the guy is playing where he should be playing, he'll be in position to make tackles. Seems to me that Ryans has been in the right place a lot this year, especially for a rookie.
 
Well, chaulk "Dr. Z" up as just another know-nothing fish hack along with most of them.

SI lost my confidence in them when they put a horse up as one of the 100 greatest athletes a few years ago. :loser
 
DeMeco is still a little raw but it isn't hard to see his body control and suddeness. He does take himself out of plays, but I expect that out of a rookie. He was too tough on him, but Ryans is what he is and we have one of the best young linebackers in the NFL and he is just getting started.

Exactly.. if he's so rough and raw, and he's still hte leading tackler in the NFL.....

imagine the possibilities.
 
Wow. He makes rookie mistakes. What a surprise.

He is still making plays all over the field and having an amazing rookie year. Dr. Z is being overly critical.
 
Have Dr. Z and Charlie Casserly ever been seen in the same room together? They have to be the same guy...Dr. Z says Demeco isn't as good as we know and CC says VY isn't one of the Top 10 QB's in the league with less than 40 starts.:crazy: :spy:
 
People want to whack anything associated with the Texans right about now. Ryans is doing great and performing way beyond expectations. Dr. Z just saw Ryans take himself out of the gamewinning VY scramble and decided to pile on one of the few positives we have as Texans fans. Ryans is doing just fine.

If Dr. Z looked at tape of Ryans against the Colts & Redskins, I understand. If he saw DeMeco against the Giants or the Raiders, I think he'd change his tune. Ryans has improved greatly over the course of the season.
 
He isnt perfect...look at the TD run from Henry where he stoped his feet too soon and Henry ran right through his arm tackle, but there is no way you lead the NFL in tackles as a rookie without some serious skill and smarts. DeMeco is a beast.

Agree with that completely...seems no matter what we do, the media can't let the past die. They need to get over it, cause we all know how good of a draft the Texans had.

A tackle is a phony stat because it is dependant upon the interpretation of the stadium's official scorer. If you study any week's box score, you will find that games in places like NE, Houston, Miami, Baltimore credit far more tackles to players than places like Dallas, Philadelphia, Atlanta... Home towns have been known to use this power in order to puff up a players numbers. For instance, Miami box scores will often credit Zach Thomas with as many as 8 or 10 assists. Meanwhile, a game in Dallas will only have 6 assisted tackles the entire game.

None of that changes the fact that Ryans is the best defensive rookie in the NFL. He makes a lot of tackles, he makes them in traffic, often at or behind the line of scrimmage, he's the best blitzing linebacker that we've ever had on our team (sad, considering we ran a 3-4 for four years), and he's very good in man and zone coverage.

True, True...maybe not phony but not always completely accurate but should be close...kinda like when Mario got half a sack credit back against Miami but wasn't in on the tackle.

True, but two points (1) everyone plays an equal number of home and away games so it evens things out to a degree and (2) as your example demonstrates, much of the questionable attribution comes on assists--an area Demeco is notably short on. It is much more obvious for guys to pad solos so the padders use the assists, but Demeco leads in solos by far. The real question about tackle stats is where the tackle is made. Jay Foreman used to get tons of tackles 5 yards down field. Ryans is consistently attacking the line of scrimmage.

Very good point..... Thats exactly what separates a good LB from a journeyman like Foreman...
 
I actually like Dr. Z and lets be honest, if you were not a Texans fan, you would be making fun of the Texan's current plight as well. Bottom line is that every major decision they made this past offseason looks to be a bad one. Mario pick = looks bad. Resigning Carr = looks bad. Passing on Young as future = looks bad. Bringing in Kubiak to turn around team = looks average to bad (especially because he chose Carr).

Dr. Z is a pretty darn good prognosticator and isnt afraid to make a reach once in a while. The 35-3 year he chose Dallas v Houston in the Super Bowl...he should have been right :)

I agree. Dr. Z doesn't really give me much insight into football, which I would expect from Sports Illustrated. I like Peter King much more than I do Dr. Z. The only good thing about Dr. Z is the "Z Says, She Says" segment they have up once a week. Not because of Z, but because of Brooklyn Decker. I think she's a better football predicter than Dr. Z.
 
The question you need to ask yourself is, "Why is he knocking Demeco and who does he want to win DROY". I bet it's someone from one of the east coast teams and he is trying to put out a buzz about Demeco that puts in question the validiaty of his play, plus he just doesn't like the Texans anyway.

I find ironic it that you can sit here in a thread about our second round draft pick, future DROY, and say every decision we made this offseason was bad.

Also, I think your evaluation on Kubiak is terribly shortsighted.
