How in the world does VY do it?

gtexan02

Working?
I don't get it. He's not a great passer. He isn't as elusive as Vick. He doesn't have good stats. But he wins. Jeez, he just wins every game he wants to. Its sort of weird. I never believed in "it" before, but watching highlights of VY these past 3 weeks have been insane.
24 point comeback against the NYG in the final 15
Comeback win against the Colts
Comeback win against the Texans

Its like something just clicks inside him and he "decides" its time to win the game, and then he does.

I'm not saying I want him on the Texans, lets just keep this about VY and not about the Texans. Thats why its in the NFL discussion section.

Maybe it's like one of those RPGs where when your health gets low, you get access to really awesome skills and stuff, and only the main characters get that skill.

Man, hes done nothing but make plays and win games since his days at Madison. All the UT fans weren't just being homers when we were telling everyone how good he is - we really wanted to spread the word but some people couldn't put aside their hate for the longhorns enough to see it, and now even still... its a topic of debate. I don't see why.

I think its pretty clear. VY has something special, hes "magic on the field".

He does it because he is a winner. Some people win, some people don't and sometimes it is that simple.

1. Poor passing mechanics
2. 6 on his wonderlic test
3. Played in shotgun his whole life
4. Prefers to run than pass
5. Wins every game he wants to win.

Weird, isn't it?

How does he do it, well when you blitz eveyone on the field and they dont stay in their lanes and a whole opens up the size of a truck all he has to do is take off sprinting it is not hard to see that, it is not off a different world.

He does it by getting his teammates to believe in him and that in turn makes them play better.

How does he do it? One word: Leadership

Yeah....

There's nothing special about what he did.....anybody could have done it....

:pigfly:

he's just got it man, he always has....like the other guys said, longhorn fans have been trying to spread the news...but we didin't in time....we weren't making things up,,,,,.....what a finish, i gave up my tickets to the game because i didn't want to root for him in the reliant statdium, wouldn't feel right...but it was an amazing finish by him......AGAIN..and AGAIN and AGAIIN.......

so now thats 3 lucky weeks in a row.....damn this kid is LUCKY

GREAT GAME VINCE.....That score had me yelling at the top of my lungs again, i haven't done that for pro football in a while...it felt great....

His speed is the only thing that's above average. He is deceptively fast; I suppose 6'5" strides can do that. When defenses keep containment on him, he will not be too difficult to corral. When a safety gets blocked 20 yards downfield, that's when the problems start to occur.

Like he said, he runs like his momma is chasing him with a belt. VY is authentic. Guys like DC haven't figured out who they are yet. VY is his own man out of necessity. He was a ready made Paul Bunyan for the Texans to pick up. He is country like Earl and home spun like Bum. In a word, he might be bigger than the franchise and the skinflint we have calling the shots here isn't comfy enough in his skin to have some competition for the power. Predictable results follow. It's okay to be New England tough with holdouts if you're good. When you're dead last, who the hell do you think you are acting like you got the bull by the horns. You got nothing and you need help. No position to play hard ball.

Tacklers bounce off his thigh pads just like in college. and high school. Big surprise. He's doing it in the NFL.

His speed, his arm, his size, his elusiveness, his poise, his vision, his leadership... that's all above average. He's averaging 6.6 yards per carry with 5 TDs on the ground in 10 starts... he's never easy to corral. I find it unbelievable that people continue to question his abilities at this point... just keep on digging, maybe you'll eventually reach China and VY won't be exceptional.

word, all that crap about poor mechanics is just that...."crap"....the ball gets where it needs to be...he proved it in college and he's proving it now.

I'm not riding his jock when I say this (maybe I am, but who cares), but I must personally say that Vince Young has been apart of some of the greatest football games that I've ever witnessed. Madison vs. Northshore in '01 is STILL one of the better football games that I've seen in my lifetime. Add those on with the 2 Rose Bowl victories and yesterdays game and Mr. VY has a pretty good "great game" resume thus far.

I might be annually selling my ticket when the Titans visit Reliant. I don't think I can take watching Young doing this to the hometown team for the next 10 years in a row. With as much love and hype as he generates (and deservedly so), I'm sure I can make enough money off my one game to pay for the other 7 home games.

As an NFL fan, he's a blast to watch. As a Texans fan, I dread these two games a year now.

Hold on little samurai--marginal improvement in any phase of the game (cough QB cough) and VY trots home a loser twice this year. It is bad, but not hari kari time.

After this years..."This is my house!" stunt, Mario and Company just might teach our Young friend a lesson next time around. :mario:

So maybe this should be a poll question.

How many of these people on here who proclaim Vince has "it" were winners themselves in some kind of high level sport?

I played college ball for four years at the D3 level. I probably could have transferred to play for a lower level D1 halfway through my career, but stayed behind because of the friendships I had made at my school. I've played for winning teams and losing teams and coached both since hanging up my sneaks thanks to premature knee troubles.

And while there are certainly players who have "it" -- in that they have a desire to win that compels them to excel, exceed and overcome talent or skill deficiencies to certain extent, while there are other players who possess all the tools but lack the attitude or "intangibles" that make them winners -- I've never seen "it" to the level that it is too often ascribed Vince.

The problem is the hyperbole, the extreme--Vince doesn't fart sunshine and doesn't conjure kittens out of thin air. He doesn't win games by himself but plays an important and increasingly special role in a much larger puzzle that continues to be ignored by most of his fanbase and the media in general. Case in point--yesterday he threw a great long ball to his wide open receiver who promptly dropped it. Had we managed another 7 points during our time with the ball, or come up with one of several of his tipped passes and, say, run it back to the house, the Titans would be the losers and guys like me would be on here making sarcastic statements about how Vince didn't have "it" after all.

Not that it will make any difference--for every Carr homer on this board there is a Vince disciple--but is it too much to ask that we attempt to practice moderation or realism?

Forget about "it".....

I saw some very well placed throws out of Vince yesterday....I was very impressed with two throws in particular....

The one that I liked the most(his reciever dropped it) was the one he threw to Bennett on the left sideline when the corner was in front of him....he threw it low and to the recievers back shoulder where the corner didn't have a chance in he!! at it....The reciever tured a little late, and the pass could have been a little higher, but I was impressed with the throw none the less....

And Jerek:

I understand what you're saying.....VY is not Merlin....he doesn't cast magical "it" spells.....

But some players have a special ora about themselves that inspires the rest of the team....And it's not like guys don't give full effort for other QB's but knowing that you have a guy behind you that will do his part and something extra, and all you have to do is make a block or two gives you a little extra pep in your step....I really can't explain it, but I've felt it as a player....When you have a QB with great ability+great leadership skills it does something for the whole team spirit wise....guys really start selling out....Did you see the block that took out two Texans and gave VY room to score on that last play ?

This is true, my friend, but VY will only get better and the Titans are $41 million under the cap with Fisher probably coming back. I'm afraid that Young will haunt the Texans for many years to come.

Anyone think that the Texans not taking him could even make him more determined to beat us twice a year?

PM me next year if you still feel like selling your tix I may not pay as much as Titan fan but I will be there cheering for the Texans!

Of course I say that now, the day after and all...but I'm sure I'll feel differently next year when all this is just a distant memory. Because there is always the chance that we could beat Young/Titans, which I would never want to miss.

I'll keep you in mind, though. ;)

Arent you 0 for 2 when it comes to VY, jerek???
Jerek pre-Rose Bowl: "USC is gonna murder Texas. VY can't save them."
Jerek pre-draft: "VY will never be as good as Carr. VY has poor mechanics that will not translate in the NFL. He won't be able to out-run people."

You and Merrill Hodge talk a lot??

I don't really care what people think of VY's 'it' factor... I care what his teammates think and what the empirical record suggests. Dude has another gear when the game is on the line at big moments, Michigan, Ohio State, USC, NYG, and HOU all found this out the hard way. Tell me he didn't kick it up another notch and run faster than he's run all year on that game winner. As to whether or not his message board "disciples" played college ball or not , I don't really care because he's got "disciples" that won a National Championship at Texas and he's got a bunch of em in Tennessee. Just check the quotes his teammates make if you want to see hyperbole...

BTW, if he doesn't have "it", then what the heck was DeMeco jumping at on that last play? It sure seemed like VY's reputation preceded him in that instance.

You are correct in saying that the efforts of guys like Bennett (generally really good and developing a strong rapport), Pacman, Bulluck, and Henry go unnoticed amidst all of the hype.

He's not perfect, but I'm not sure the things his teammates say are hyperbole.

Oh yea, I was there, and that goes down as one of the best games I ever saw, and that includes when a Willowridge game was the place to be. Didn't the two teams score over 100 points combined? Awesome, the memories. Wow what could have been! Imagine 50K at a high school game, heck, a Texans ticket would have been the hardest ticket in the league to get.

Great post. The only problem is...it makes too much sense.:tease:

Dude, where have you been? Months of silence and now you want to pop up to pump a little manlove now that Vince got a last laugh here in Reliant?

Once I've suppressed my gag reflex at your avatar, I'm happy to admit that Vince has come along faster than I expected him to at the pro level. His throwing mechanics still suck -- if you can't see that after yesterday, I don't know what to tell you -- and you can thank in part poor pursuit and tackling for that game winning scamper. Vince made a great play to seal the W and I congratulate him for it. And he otherwise was pretty well contained for most of the game. BFD -- pump him for it if you'd like, but last I looked, 7 other QBs have beaten our D this year too. Funny that I didn't see you on here pimping them.

Vince is playing well and is improving quickly, moreso than I thought he would. I'll give him cred for it. And as much as Carr hasn't been given a lot to work with lately, it's quite possible I was wrong about him succeeding at this level too. Anything else you want me to say? Have fun rooting for Possum Hollow.
